THE first of two trips in four days to the Fraher Field for Tipperary football sides began in a positive fashion last night when their U21’s cruised to a comfortable win over Waterford in their Munster quarter-final. John Evans will bring his senior charges to the Dungarvan venue on Saturday night for a crucial Division 3 league tie and he will be heartened by this U21’s showing last night. Tipperary entered this game in the novel position of defending champions and lived up to that status with a polished performance.

There were only 585 souls present for the first ever inter-county tie played under floodlights at the Fraher Field and they witnessed a severely lopsided affair. Tipperary’s reserves of strength were illustrated by the fact that they lined out without three members of their 2010 triumphant side. Dara Dwyer and Alan Moloney were both sidelined with injury while Gavin Ryan was only fit enough to start on the bench before being introduced during the second-half. But Tipperary made light of those absences as they controlled the flow of the game. Their first-half performance was admirable as they played against a hefty wind and their 1-7 to 1-3 interval lead was indicative of their superiority. Corner-forward Conor Sweeney demonstrated why he has been utilised at senior level this spring and finished the night with 1-6 to his name. Possessing the most incisive attacker on view was integral to Tipperary’s progress, particularly when set against the Waterford’s attacking deficiencies as they endured a debilitating scoring drought between the 18th and 61st minutes.

For Tipperary, Peter Acheson continued the high standards of midfield play that he had set during last year’s campaign. That was the springboard for Tipperary’s early dominance as they intelligently used possession and their full-forward line of Sweeney, David Butler and David McGrath looked extremely sharp. Wing-forward Aldo Matassa and Butler both wriggled clear for tidy points in the opening five minutes after McGrath created opportunities. Then Sweeney strode forward to take centre stage. In the 12th minute the Ballyporeen man careered through the Waterford rearguard before planting a superb shot into the top corner of the net. Sweeney followed that up by tapping over a free and Tipperary were left after the opening quarter with a 1-3 to 0-1 lead.

Waterford’s marksmanship had been sub-standard in the opening stages yet remarkably they wiped out Tipperary’s five-point advantage by the 18th minute. Paul Whyte beautifully swept over a ‘45 in the 16th minute and then Niall Walsh kicked a point from 40 yards. Their rally was completed in brilliant fashion in the 18th minute when centre-back David Phelan capped an impressive run by rocketing a shot to the roof of the net. Tipperary approached the spell before the interval calmly and set about restoring their advantage. Sweeney curled over a free, Billy Hewitt was on target from play, Butler slammed a fierce drive over the bar and then Acheson knocked over a good score in injury-time to complete the first-half scoring. Tipperary’s 1-7 to 1-3 half-time advantage could have been extended only for Hewitt to see his 22nd effort on goal cannon off the post after a wonderful team move.

The second-half was a routine affair for Tipperary as their resolute defence fronted by Jonathan Ryan, Robbie Kiely and Eddie Kenrick deprived Waterford of scores. Up front Tipperary’s scoring rates were initially slow and they only lead 1-9 to 1-3 by the end of the third-quarter. But in the finale they found their range once more with Sweeney to the fore and Butler, substitute Paul McEvoy and John O’Callaghan all chipping in as well. David Grey grabbed a late consolation point for Waterford but Tipperary worthily advanced to face Cork in a fortnight in Páirc Ui Rinn.

Tipperary got the defence of their title off to a good start at Dungarvan last night. The star of the show was corner-forward Conor Sweeney, who finished with a haul of 1-6. Peter Acheson was a reliable ball-winner in midfield and the champions opened up a two-point lead inside four minutes, with Aldo Matassa and David Butler on target. In the 12th minute Sweeney grabbed a goal from 12 yards, but Waterford did reply with an excellent goal of their own through David Phelan.

Tipperary finished the half strongly and points from Sweeney, David McGrath, Butler and Acheson left them four points in front at the break. Tipperary dominated a poor second half and added seven points to lead by 1-14 to 1-3 as the game entered injury-time. Waterford did not get their first point of the second half until David Grey scored two minutes into stoppage-time.

Celebrating 50 Years of the Munster Under 21 Football Championship

1962-2011

• At the Munster Council Convention of 1961 held in Tralee it was suggested that an Under 21competition be inaugurated.
• Convention of 1962, held in Thurles, decided to inaugurate an Under 21 Football competition
• The first game in this new competition was played on the 22/7/1962 with Cork defeating Waterford in a quarter final clash at the Cork Athletic Grounds.   The second quarter final, Limerick v Kerry, did not take place as Limerick were unable to field a team because of Club commitments.   In the semi finals Cork defeated Tipperary while Kerry overcame the Clare challenge.   The final was played in Kenmare on the 9^th. of December with victory going to the Kerry side on a 2-7 to 1-4 scoreline.   The Kerry Team that won the inaugural Munster Under 21 Football Championship was – Peter Hanley, Jo Jo Barrett, B. Glavin. P. Kerins, Pat Aherne, P. O’Donoghue, J. O’Driscoll, M. Fleming, Denis O’Sullivan, Aloysius ‘’Weeshie’’ Fogarty, Seamus Roche, D. O’Shea, Dom O’Donnell (Capt), R. O’Donnell, D. O’Shea
• Cork were victorious in the 1963 competition and the winning team was – Ray Cawley, Dermot Kehilly, John McGrath, Des Nangle, Donal Buckley, Denis Coughlan, Gus Harrington, Brendan Coughlan, Paul O’Sullivan, Mick Coughlan, Ned Coughlan, Dan Haredy, J.J. Murphy, Tim F. Hayes, Flor Hayes
• Kerry were winners in 1964 and they went on to defeat Galway and Laois and so capture the first All-Ireland Title in this grade.
• Kerry and Cork have dominated this competition and only once in the history of the championship were one or both counties not involved in the final.   That was in 2000 when Limerick played Waterford in the Final in Dungarvan with Limerick lifting the crown for the first and only time on a 0-7 to 0-4 scoreline. The winning Limerick Team was Mike Keogh, Mark O’Riordan, Pat Fitzgerald, Brian Geary, Conor Mullane, Stephen Lucey,  Tommy Stack. Jason Stokes, John Galvin (Captain), Pat Aherne, Timmy Carroll, Declan Brouder, Conor Fitzgerald, Brian Begley, Colm Hickey.
• Waterford lifted the title for the only time in  2003 when they overcame Cork in the semi final and Kerry in the final on a 2-8 to 1-9 scoreline.   The victorious Waterford team was – David Hickey, Michael Crotty, Ger Hayes, John O’Reilly, Niall Hennessy (Captain), Edmond Rockett, John Hurney, Sean Dempsey, Michael Walsh, Liam Ó Lonáin, Mark Power, Tony Whelan, Bob Costello, Shane Walsh, Billy Harty

• Only 2 Finals have been drawn.   The 1987 final between Kerry and Tipperary played in Tralee finished level, 0-7 each and in the replay in Clonmel victory went to Kerry on a 0-15 to 1-11 scoreline.   The 1997 final between Cork and Kerry also finished all square, Kerry 2-11 Cork 3-8, in Tralee with victory going to the Kerry side in the replay at Pairc Ui Rinn on a 0-12 to 1-7 scoreline

• Munster Under 21 Football Cup:

• All Ireland Under 21 Football Championship

In Under 21 Football All Ireland Roll of Honour Cork have won 11 Titles and Kerry have 10 Titles to their credit. Cork were All Ireland Under 21 Champions in 1970, 1971, 1980, 1981, 1984, 1985, 1986, 1989, 1994, 2007, 2009. Kerry titles were won in 1964, 1973, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1990, 1995, 1996, 1998, 2008
