Lidl Ireland have launched One Good Club™, a five-step youth mental health awareness programme for local clubs, developed in partnership with the Ladies Gaelic Football Association (LGFA) and Jigsaw – the National Centre for Youth Mental Health.

    Lidl’s One Good Club™

The Lidl One Good Club™ programme aims to increase awareness and knowledge of mental health across the LGFA community. The new initiative offers clubs the opportunity to support all members and engage in activities that can promote their health and wellbeing.

The programme is championed by four One Good Club™ Ambassadors – Dublin’s Carla Rowe, three-time senior All-Ireland and three-time All-Star award winner; Galway’s Nicola Ward, 2019 All-Star award winner; Waterford’s Caoimhe McGrath, Division 2 winner in 2019 and Donegal’s Emer Gallagher, Full Back on the Ulster Championship winning team in 2019.

The One Good Club™ programme forms part of Lidl’s €2.1 million investment in the fifth year of partnership with the LGFA.

    The Programme

The five-step programme was developed using the ‘5 a Day for your Mental Health’, an evidence-informed framework, made up of simple actions aimed at boosting your mental health and wellbeing. The steps include ‘Connect’, ‘Be Active’, ‘Take Notice’, ‘Give’ and ‘Keep Learning’.

Each step provides participating clubs with a suite of suggested activities, simple enough to complete without a significant time or resource commitment. Activities include connecting with the community by hosting a coffee morning, organising fun ‘get active’ sessions aimed at younger members of the community not involved in sport or introducing meditation and mindfulness as part of the ‘cool down’ after training.

    Calling all Clubs!

Lidl are calling on clubs across the country to sign up to the first round of the programme commencing on April 6th over a period of 10 weeks. Participating clubs are encouraged to undertake activities from one of the 5 a day each fortnight and to capture the moments and share them on social media using the hashtag #OneGoodClub.

    Funding awards

Clubs that complete all five steps in the programme will receive official Lidl One Good Club™ accreditation, as well as gear and kit for their club. Accredited clubs will also enter the running to win a Lidl One Good Club™ funding award. There are three funding awards available with a total value of €10,000 and will be awarded to clubs who demonstrate the following:

  • Most Innovative Initiative – €2,500
  • Most Community Involvement – €2,500
  • Best Overall Programme Engagement – €5,000

    Youth mental health in Ireland

40% of adolescents aged 12-19 reported experiencing levels of depression outside the normal range, according to My World Survey 2, Ireland’s largest and most comprehensive study of young people’s mental health developed by UCD School of Psychology and Jigsaw, the National Centre for Youth Mental Health.*.
Almost three quarters of females reported that they played sports regularly in the past six months – highlighting the significance of the role sport has to play in the development of positive mental wellbeing in females.

“We will continue to work closely with the LGFA throughout 2020 to ensure that participants at every level of the game are reaping the benefits of the sponsorship, through programmes like One Good Club™ or other initiatives like #SeriousSupport, which has proved extremely successful in engaging girls in sport across the country.”
