EirGrid Munster Under 21 Championship Final

KERRY 2-16 CORK 0-6

Report By Denis Hurley for GAA.ie

A dominant performance saw Kerry win a first EirGrid Munster U21FC title since 2008, proving far too strong for Cork at Páirc Uí Rinn.

While Cork – seeking a sixth provincial title in seven years – couldn’t start key players Kevin Flahive or Stephen Sherlock, some senior counties would have struggled to deal with the Kingdom, featuring 14 players who had won All-Ireland minor medals in the past three years.

In front of 3,861, Kerry began like they meant business and within the first seven minutes they had four unanswered points on the board, Kilian Spillane with two while Seán O’Shea and Cathal Bambury were also on target.

In the midst of that, Cork’s Michael Hurley was unlucky not to cap a driving run with a goal, his shot hitting the post, and the Rebels suggested that they had settled when a free from captain Seán O’Donoghue was followed by two points from Brian Coakley.

Instead, though, Kerry found another gear and pushed on to open up a lead that Cork wouldn’t be able to bridge. In the 19th minute, they struck for a goal as wing-back Brian Ó Beaglaioch – pushed up on Cork sweeper Michael Dineen – cut through and squared for full-forward Matthew O’Sullivan, who had an easy task from close range.

An excellent Spillane point from the left was followed by a good O’Shea free and Kerry were good value for their 1-6 to 0-3 half-time lead. By the time Cork would get their fourth point, a Gary Murphy free in the 38th minute, Kerry had added another four of their own in the opening seven minutes of the second half. The impressive Tom O’Sullivan got things going after the restart before O’Shea and Spillane (two) opened up a ten-point advantage.

Murphy’s point didn’t signal a Cork comeback, with Andrew Barry continuing to dominate at midfield for Kerry. The points continued to come and half-time sub Conor Geaney was only denied a goal by a good Ross Donovan save.

At the other end, Cork wing-back Jerry O’Riordan might have netted, but Ó Beaglaioch made a great goal-line block. Even if it had gone in, a comeback wasn’t going to materialise but Geaney capped a good night for Kerry, who will present tough opposition for Galway or Sligo in the All-Ireland semi-final.

Scorers for Kerry: Seán O’Shea 0-6 (3fs, 145), Killian Spillane 0-5 (2fs), Conor Geaney 1-2 (0-1 free), Matthew O’Sullivan 1-1, Cathal Bambury, Tom O’Sullivan 0-1 each.

Scorers for Cork: Brian Coakley (1f), Stephen Sherlock (2fs) 0-2 each, Gary Murphy, Seán O’Donoghue 0-1 (f) each.

Allianz Hurling League Division 1A – Waterford 2-21 Clare 1-22

Waterford defeated Clare by 2-21 to 1-22 in Round 5 of the Allianz Hurling League Division 1A on Sunday March 26th at Cusack Park Ennis.

Devine lands decisive score for Waterford

Allianz Hurling League Division 1A

WATERFORD 2-21 CLARE 1-22

Report by Eoin Brennan for GAA.ie

A late goal from substitute Tom Devine catapulted Waterford into the Allianz League quarter-finals for a third successive year at the expense of holders Clare in front of 6,640 in Cusack Park this afternoon.

Having led for 50 minutes of the tie, the hosts were sucker-punched at the death to suffer their first home defeat in two years and send them into a relegation play-off against Dublin next weekend. Waterford also started the brighter with Shane Bennett’s fifth minute goal ensuring a 1-3 to 0-0 advantage with the aid of the breeze at their backs.

However, led by Podge Collins, Clare would finally settle with an unanswered 1-6 tally of their own including a glorious 15th minute goal from the Cratloe dual star, with five subsequent points from the returning Tony Kelly actually lifting Clare to a 1-13 to 1-9 lead by the 34th minute.

Two late Pauric Mahony frees lessened the damage by the break however at 1-13 to 1-11, with a further brace on the restart levelling up the tie by the 39th minute. Clare responded with four successive points from Kelly, Collins, John Conlon and Cathal McInerney to nudge 1-17 to 1-13 clear by the 45th minute.

However, mainly through Mahony’s unerring accuracy from placed balls, the visitors stayed in touch and were only a point in arrears when substitute Devine struck for the decisive goal in the 64th minute, albeit that goalkeeper Andrew Fahey produced a super initial save before the ball was flicked over the line at the second attempt.

Clare hit back, but late points from David Fitzgerald and replacement Bobby Duggan were matched by Stephen Bennett and Tommy Ryan as Waterford held on for their third successive away victory to set up a quarter-final showdown with Galway next weekend.

Scorers for Waterford: Pauric Mahony 0-10 (8fs), Shane Bennett 1-1, Tom Devine 1-1, Stephen Bennett 0-3, Brian O’Halloran 0-2, Austin Gleeson 0-2, Patrick Curran 0-1, Tommy Ryan 0-1

Allianz HL D1A: Horgan earns Cork win against Tipp

Allianz Hurling League Division 1A

CORK 0-26 TIPPERARY 3-16

Report by Denis Hurley for GAA.ie

Cork inflicted Tipperary’s first defeat since winning last year’s All-Ireland SHC as they reached the Allianz HL Division 1 quarter-finals following a pulsating tie at Páirc Uí Rinn on Sunday afternoon. Patrick Horgan scored 15 points for the Rebels, including the winner deep in injury time, as Kieran Kingston’s side finished in second place in the Division 1A table.

While Cork led by 0-24 to 2-15 after three Horgan points between the 66th and 68th minutes, Séamus Callanan struck for his second and Tipp’s third goal in the final minute of normal time after gathering Noel McGrath’s sideline cut. Horgan put Cork ahead immediately after that, but Tipp levelled once more as substitute Ronan Maher scored from a sideline. There was just enough time for one more Cork attack and Horgan was on hand to score the winner with the final puck.

Cork had the wind behind them in the first half and pulled clear midway through, scoring seven of eight points between the 18th and 32nd minutes to move 0-12 to 0-6 ahead. Tipp were boosted as half-time approached as Callanan netted following Damien Cahalane’s good block on John McGrath, and then, after Séamus Harnedy replied for Cork, McGrath nabbed a second goal.

Early sub Darragh Fitzgibbon pointed to leave Cork 0-14 to 2-6 ahead at the break and he was prominent as Cork opened up a five-point lead early in the second period but Tipp came more into the game. Callanan, Noel McGrath and Paul Flynn, Pádraic Maher and John McGrath combined for six unanswered pointed to put them 2-14 to 0-18 in front but Horgan and Luke Meade tied matters for Cork.

Horgan’s 65, after Michael Cahalane went close to a goal, restored their lead and that would be the way it was at the end too, but not before more twists and turns late on.

Scorers for Cork: Patrick Horgan 0-15 (10fs, 165), Darragh Fitzgibbon 0-5, Alan Cadogan, Séamus Harnedy 0-2 each, Luke Meade, Conor Lehane (f) 0-1 each.

Scorers for Tipperary: Séamus Callanan 2-6 (4fs, 165), John McGrath 1-1, Dan McCormack, Pádraic Maher 0-2 each, Jason Forde, Paul Flynn, Ronan Maher (sideline) 0-1 each.

Allianz HL D1B: Offaly edge out 14-man Kerry

Allianz Hurling League Division 1B

Offaly 1-21 Kerry 2-16

Report from GAA.ie

Offaly registered their first win of the League campaign and in the process sealed a quarter-final tie with Tipperary thanks to this two-point victory over Kerry. The Midlanders had the wind at their backs in the first-half but found themselves in arrears when a Padraig Boyle goal pushed Kerry 1-4 to 0-5 ahead.

The home team suffered a serious blow just before half-time though when John Buckley was red-carded, and by the break Offaly were leading by 0-15 to 1-9. Kerry battled hard in the second-half and point from Boyle had them level by the 44th minute.

But a Stephen Quirke goal gave Offaly the impetus they so badly needed, and the longer the second-half went on the more their numerical advantage told. Kerry did give Offaly a fright with a late Shane Nolan goal, but the final whistle blew in Austin Stack Park shortly afterwards.

Allianz Football League Division 1 – Cavan 1-10 Kerry 0-13

Cavan and Kerry finished level on a scoreline of 1-10 to 0-13 in Round 6 of the Allianz Football League Division 1 on Sunday March 26th at Kingspan Breffni Park.

Allianz FL D1: Johnston kicks late leveller

Allianz Football League Division One

CAVAN 1-10 KERRY 0-13

Report by Paul Fitzpatrick for GAA.ie

Down by two points in injury time, it looked as if Cavan were consigned to relegation, but a late salvo saw them snatch a draw here and keep their hopes alive as the campaign enters the final round next Sunday.

Starting debutant Joe Dillon, who got on the end of a Conor Moynagh delivery, landed their penultimate point and then, three minutes into stoppage time, substitute Seanie Johnston held his nerve to fire over a free from all of 40 metres and deny Kerry the win.

Despite the sunshine, a swirling wind made conditions difficult. Cavan played their best football of the first half in the opening 10 minutes, but tailed off thereafter, with seven successive wides in the lead-in to the interval proving particularly costly as they trailed by 0-6 to 0-4 at the break.

A sublime individual point from Breffni captain Killian Clarke opened the scoring and two more top-class scores from newcomers Niall Clerkin and Conor Madden gave the Blues hope. They were guilty of over-exuberant tackling, though, and after Paul Geaney had cancelled out Clarke’s opener with a free, he added two more from the hands to level matters with a quarter of an hour played.

A minute later, ref Maurice Deegan spotted a foul on Madden from 50 metres away and Gearoid McKiernan converted for Cavan – but that was to be the home side’s final score of the half. Kerry landed the final three points through Donnchadh Walsh, Geaney (free) and Jack Barry but they were still being held fairly well by a rigid Cavan back-line.

The problem for the home side was that they appeared to be out of ideas at the other end and with each of those wides, confidence was drained bit by bit. With the excellent David Moran providing steady leadership in the middle third, the Kingdom looked poised to push on in the second half and that feeling was intensified when sub Bryan Sheehan sent over a huge point with his first touch.

But Cavan manager Mattie McGleenan had thrown Dara McVeety into the inside forward line and the Crosserlough man’s pace immediately began to cause Kerry problems. He won a free which Madden converted and then after a great pass over the top from Cian Mackey, McVeety burst clear and planted a terrific shot to the net.

Sheehan replied with a free but when McVeety earned another and McKiernan converted it, Cavan – 1-6 to 0-8 in front – sensed a first victory over the Kingdom in 51 years was in the offing. Barry John Keane clipped over a good score for Kerry, but again Cavan responded through two well-struck frees from sub Niall McDermott. Geaney replied with a similar effort and with 10 minutes to go, Kerry levelled through a super Stephen O’Brien effort.

In the frantic final minutes, Kerry looked like they had done enough when Keane kicked a beauty and Sheehan curled in a tremendous free from the left wing. But Cavan dug deep and Joe Dillon punched over a crucial score before sub Johnston, with his first touch, nailed a difficult 40-metre free to secure a draw. Kerry had one final chance, but Geaney’s free from the right wing – on the wrong side for a right-footer and into a treacherous wind – went wide.

Scorers for Cavan: Dara McVeety 1-0, Conor Madden 0-2 (1f), Gearoid McKiernan 0-2 (2fs), Niall McDermott 0-2 (2fs), Killian Clarke 0-1, Niall Clerkin 0-1, Joe Dillon 0-1, Seanie Johnston 0-1 (f).

Scorers for Kerry: Paul Geaney 0-6f (6fs), Bryan Sheehan 0-2 (1f), Barry John Keane 0-2, Stephen O’Brien 0-1, Donnchadh Walsh 0-1.

CAVAN: Raymond Galligan, Killian Brady, Killian Clarke, Fergal Reilly, Niall Clerkin, Conor Moynagh, Rory Dunne, Tomás Corr, Gearoid McKiernan, Gerry Smith, Dara McVeety, Martin Reilly, Niall Murray, Conor Madden, Joe Dillon

Allianz Hurling League Division 1B – Galway 0-24 Limerick 1-18

Galway defeated Limerick by 0-24 to 1-18 in Round 5 of the Allianz Hurling League Division 1B on Sunday March 26th at the Gaelic Grounds Limerick.

Allianz HL D1B: David Burke powers Galway to victory

Allianz Hurling League Division 1B

GALWAY 0-24 LIMERICK 1-18

Report by Declan Rooney for GAA.ie

All-Star midfielder David Burke produced a stunning display for Galway as they ended Division 1B campaign with a fourth win at the Gaelic Grounds in Limerick.

Limerick led by 1-13 to 0-15 at the end of an exciting opening half which saw Cian Lynch strike for the only goal of the game just before the break. But David Burke was a colossus at the start of the second-half, and he reeled off five points from play, with Thomas Monaghan and then Niall Burke helping to secure the victory for Galway.

Galway played with the breeze at their backs in the first-half, but they couldn’t use that to their advantage and they went in trailing by one point at half-time. It was hugely competitive and the sides traded scores all the way through, but Galway hit six points in a row during a blistering four-minute spell towards the end of the half and that pushed them four points clear.

But the hosts finished the stronger and Lynch’s low shot flashed past Colm Callanan in the Galway goal one minute before half-time, while Kyle Hayes tagged on another point, and Shane Dowling added a couple of scores for the half-time lead. Joe Canning was outstanding for Galway in the first-half. He wore the No 10 jersey, but started at corner-forward and scored nine points before the interval.

The Portumna clubman missed a lot of hurling since Galway’s All-Ireland semi-final defeat against Tipperary last season, but he looked at the peak of his powers in Limerick. He scored a sideline cut, two frees from inside his own 65, and three great points from play as part of his tally, to help Galway stay in touch.

Limerick No 10 Dowling was dominating down the other end of the field, with seven points in the first-half. The key score of the half came just before the break when Cian Lynch blasted to the net and Limerick by the minimum at half-time.

However Galway midfielder Burke took control of the game after the break, and he was majestic as Galway raced in front with their captain scoring five excellent points from play. His replacement Niall Burke struck the insurance score in the 72nd minute, as Galway held on.

Scorers for Galway: Joe Canning 0-10 (6fs, 1’sl), David Burke 0-6, Cathal Mannion 0-2, Paul Flaherty 0-1, Johnny Coen 0-1, Aidan Harte 0-1, Shane Maloney 0-1, Thomas Monaghan 0-1, Niall Burke 0-1.

Allianz Football League Division 3 – Louth 0-16 Tipperary 0-12

Louth defeated Tipperary by 0-16 to 0-12 in Round 6 of the Allianz Football League Division 3 on Sunday March 26th at Semple Stadium Thurles.

Allianz FL D3: Louth earn promotion

Allianz Football League Division 3

LOUTH 0-16 TIPPERARY 0-12

Report by Jackie Cahill for GAA.ie

Colin Kelly’s Louth have been promoted from Division 3 of the Allianz Football League. The Wee County produced an impressive second half display against Tipperary at Semple Stadium to win by four points and clinch Division 2 fare for the 2018 season.

Louth’s victory moves them to 10 points and on top of Division 3, with Tipperary left to face off against Armagh next weekend in a winner-takes-all showdown for the other promotion slot. Tipp registered 13 wides and Conor Sweeney missed a penalty in first half stoppage time, but Louth were still good value for the win.

On a glorious afternoon in Thurles, Louth outscored Tipp by 0-10 to 0-4 in the second half – and that proved good enough. Not even black cards for full-back Patrick Reilly in the first half and Declan Byrne in the 59th minute could halt the progress of a well-drilled and committed Louth outfit.

The visitors had Eoin O’Connor in fine scoring form and they operated with the breeze at their backs in the opening half. The sides were level three times early on, but Tipp went closest to scoring an elusive goal, captain Brian Fox denied in the 24th minute before Sweeney was handed the chance to convert a penalty.

In the second minute of stoppage time, Michael Quinlivan was fouled in an incident that led to almost two minutes of treatment for the 2016 All-Star. Sweeney stepped up to the penalty, but his effort struck the upright and rebounded back into play, with Philip Austin on hand to score a point, and hand Tipp a 0-8 to 0-6 lead at the break.

Louth threatened early in the second half as James Stewart forced Evan Comerford to turn his shot over the Tipperary crossbar. Sensing that there was something in this game for them, Louth grabbed the initiative and a run of four unanswered points put them 0-12 to 0-10 in front.

Louth lost Byrne to a black card after he hauled down Jack Kennedy, but Tipp were handed a setback five minutes from the end of normal time when Quinlivan was black-carded. Tipp were back to within a point on a couple of occasions, but Louth finished the match strongly; scores from O’Connor (free), Gerard McSorley and Conal McKeever sealed victory, and promotion, in front of 1,067 spectators.

Scorers for Louth: Eoin O’Connor 0-5 (1f), Derek Maguire and Dean Maguire 0-2 each, John Bingham, James Stewart, Tommy Durnin, Declan Byrne, Paraic Smith (f), Conal McKeever and Gerard McSorley 0-1 each.

Scorers for Tipperary: Conor Sweeney 0-4 (3fs), Michael Quinlivan (1f) and Liam McGrath 0-2 each, Jack Kennedy, Josh Keane (f), Kevin O’Halloran (f) and Philip Austin 0-1 each.

LOUTH: Craig Lynch; Padraig Rath, Patrick Reilly, John Bingham; Derek Maguire, Kurt Murphy, James Stewart; Dean Maguire, Tommy Durnin; Declan Byrne, Paraic Smith, Bevan Duffy; Conor Martin, Eoin O’Connor, Sam Mulroy.
Subs: Kevin Carr for Reilly (b/c 25), Gerard McSorley for Mulroy (41), Ryan Burns for Byrne (b/c 59), Ruairí Moore for Durnin (64), Conal McKeever for Martin (70+3), Derek Crilly for O’Connor (70+5).

TIPPERARY: Evan Comerford; Alan Campbell, Paddy Codd, Willie Connors; Bill Maher, Robbie Kiely, Jimmy Feehan; Liam Casey, Jack Kennedy; Josh Keane, Kevin O’Halloran, Brian Fox; Conor Sweeney, Michael Quinlivan, Liam McGrath.
Subs: Liam Boland for Fox (temp 8-17), Philip Austin for Keane (inj., 20), Kevin Fahey for Maher (h.t.), Liam Boland for O’Halloran (59), Shane O’Connell for Quinlivan (b/c 66).

Allianz Football League Division 2 – Cork 0-20 Derry 2-10

Cork defeated Derry by 0-20 to 2-10 in Round 6 of the Allianz Football League Division 2 on Sunday March 26th at Celtic Park.

Colm O’Neill stars for Cork in morale-boosting win against Derry

Derry 2-10 Cork 0-20

Report from the Irish Examiner newspaper

Cork’s footballers eased their relegation fears – and left Derry on the brink of the drop into Division Three – with a four-point win this afternoon that was notable for the fact that Colm O’Neill contributed over half their tally, writes Brendan O’Brien.

The corner-forward signed for nine points in the draw with Meath in the previous round but he went two better here with four from play, another quartet of frees and three from ‘45’s. It was a sensational display of shooting from the Ballyclough man.

Paul Kerrigan chipped in with another quintet from play. Cork began brightly on a day dominated by blue skies and one all but unperturbed by a lazy breeze that drifted across the pitch.

Up by four points to one within eight minutes, their hunger was evident in the way in which they were closing down Derry kickouts and running off the shoulder of colleagues, but the hosts claimed the next three points to leave things as they were at the first whistle with 15 gone.

Cork had already seen one goal chance slip by when Ian Maguire tried to fist pass a ball to Peter Kelleher on the edge of the small square and Kelleher himself would smack one off the post when put through one-on-one after 21 minutes.

Add in five other wasted attempts on goal and the potential for even greater damage was clear but the visitors were, despite all that, clearly the better side for most of a first-half that would last 55 minutes due to an injury to Derry defender Jason Rocks.

The corner-back shipped a late tackle from Stephen Cronin, for which the Cork player was booked, and he departed in an ambulance after almost 18 minutes lying on the field receiving attention. The round of applause he received on leaving was the least he deserved.

Derry, with a trio of key men in Chrissy McKaigue, Brendan Rogers and Danny Heavron back in the side this week, were the quicker to hit their stride on the restart with a goal from Danny Tallon propelling them into the lead for the first time.

It came from a quick ball into the forward line but Cork were more comfortable running at the home defenders and it delivered more results with three points to Derry’s one leaving the Munster side with a 0-10 to 1-6 lead at the break.

The first-half mirrored the first – not in length, thankfully, but with Cork content to tap points over at a regular rate and with Derry hanging onto their coat tails thanks to another goal from Tallon, this one finding its mark 52 minutes in.

That brought Derry back to within a point but a Cork team criticised for an inability to push home many an advantage in recent times reacted impressively, as they had to the first goal, and racked up the next four scores to see the game out and leave Derry standing over the trapdoor into the third tier.

Scorers for Derry: D Tallon (2-1); E Lynn and C McKaigue (both 0-2); B Herron (0-2 frees); N Forester, N Loughlin (both 0-1); M Lynch (0-1 free).

Scorers for Cork: C O’Neill (0-11, 4 frees, 3 ‘45’s); P Kerrigan (0-5); M Collins (0-2, 1 free); J O’Rourke and B O’Driscoll (0-1).

Derry: T Mallon; J Rocks, B Rogers, N Keenan; N Forester, C McKaigue, M Craig; P Cassidy, C McAtamney; E Lynn, E McGuckin, C Williams; D Tallon, N Loughlin, B Herron
Subs: C Mullan for Rocvks (27); M McEvoy for Mullan (34); D Heavron for Craig (45); M Lynch for McGuckin (51);.

Cork: K O’Halloran; M Shields, T Clancy (Clonakilty), K Crowley; T Clancy (Fermoy), J LOughrey, S Cronin; I Maguire, R Deane; K O’Driscoll, M Collins, J O’Rourke; C O’Neill, P Kelleher, P Kerrigan
Subs: C O’Driscoll for T Clancy (Fermoy, HT); D O’Connor for Kelleher (51); B O’Driscoll for O’Rourke (57); D Og Hodnett for Collins (62); C Dorman for Shields (64); J McLoughlin for Cronin (65).

Referee: M Duffy (Sligo).

All-Ireland Post Primary Schools Croke Cup (Under 18.5 A Hurling) Final – Our Lady’s Templemore 3-13 St. Kierans Kilkenny 3-11

Our Lady’s Templemore take home Croke Cup with narrow win over St Kieran’s College

Our Lady’s Templemore 3-13 St Kieran’s College 3-11

Report by Eoghan Cormican for the Irish Examiner newspaper

St Kieran’s, a point down at the break, started the second period in whirlwind fashion, posting 1-2 in quick succession. Adrian Mullen, who was well marked by Templemore captain Paddy Cadell in the first half, kicked to the net to send the reigning champions 2-8 to 1-7 clear.

Lyndon Fairbrother replied for Templemore with a superb strike to the roof of Dean Mason’s net on 38 minutes. Back down the field, though, came Kieran’s and despite a fine Eoin Collins save to keep out Diarmuid Phelan’s piledriver, Mullen was on hand to stick the rebound to the net for his second and his team’s third green flag. The Kilkenny college once again moved four points clear, but Templemore refused to lie down and a goal by Ray McCormack on 48 minutes after his initial shot was blocked levelled matters at 3-9 apiece.

The winners, in the crucial period of the game, would hit the next four points. Ciarán Brennan and Adrian Mullen both had goal chances late on to rescue the situation for St Kieran’s. Both shots, however, were repelled.

The Tipperary school will have been disappointed to be only clear at the break – 1-7 to 1-6, their lead significantly eaten into by a Ciarán Brennan goal a minute and a half into first-half stoppages. Credit here to Eoghan Moylan who did exceptionally well to dispossess Pádraig Campion to set up the chance for Brennan who finished excellently from an acute angle.

Brian McGrath supplied the Templemore goal on 11 minutes, the half-forward latching onto a long delivery after ghosting in behind the Kieran’s full-back line. The Munster champions were finding scores easing to come by, with David O’Shea, Diarmuid Ryan, Brian McGrath and Jerry Kelly on target from open players.

They faltered slightly after the break but came good at the crucial time to seal a famous victory for the school – their second ever Croke Cup win and first since 1978.

Scorers for Our Lady’s Templemore: B McGrath (1-8, 0-4 frees 0-2 ’65); L Fairbrother (1-1); R McCormack (1-0); D O’Shea, D Ryan, A O’Meara, J Kelly (0-1 each).
