Maurice Shanahan cuts loose for Lismore

Report by Denis Hurley for the Irish Examiner newspaper

Lismore (Waterford) 2-20 Bandon (Cork) 1-12: Waterford star Maurice Shanahan’s tour de force was key as Lismore despatchded Bandon in the AIB Munster Club IHC yesterday.

Having won their own county title on Friday night, defeating Dunhill, Lismore might have feared they wouldn’t be ready for the Cork champions. But goals in the eighth and 11th minutes from Shanahan – he finished with 2-10 – put them into a commanding lead which they didn’t relinquish. Manager Dave Barry was delighted with the focus shown.

“The county final win in Waterford was the most important thing at the start of the year because we wanted to go back up senior,” he said, “but the lads decided on Friday night that they were going to give this everything that was in them.”

Bandon, winners of the Premier IHC and IFC in Cork, suffered due to the absence of key defenders James O’Donovan, on honeymoon, and the injured Eoghan Ryan, while Donough Lucey, who had been a doubt, started but only lasted 10 minutes.

From the off, it was clear Maurice Shanahan and his older brother Dan would be difficult to contain. After the younger sibling had put Lismore 0-3 to 0-2 ahead, he then did well to win Eoin Bennett’s sideline before cutting through the cover and firing to the net.

Soon after, sub Brian Bennett’s first involvement played in Maurice again, same result. Bandon responded as Ronan Crowley slung over a long-range free from the left sideline and they were right back in it as Joe Harrington’s nice delivery was won by Michael Cahalane, who showed good awareness to offload to Mattie McNamara allowing him to finish smartly. They couldn’t get within that four-point margin, however, as any scores by the Lilywhites were responded to by Maurice Shanahan. When Cahalane did get a half sight of goal, Lismore full-back David Prendergast did well to block him, and a 2-10 to 1-6 half-time lead was commanding for Lismore.

Lismore had four of the first five points of the second-half, with midfielders Stevie Barry and John Prendergast getting on the scoresheet, to ease further clear and though Bandon captain Darren Crowley and his brother Ronan did get fine points, a goal was needed. They might have had it on 45 when Ronan Crowley centred for Mark Sugrue but Seánie Barry saved well. From there, Lismore pushed on to see out the game, centre-back Ray Barry adding three frees after Maurice Shanahan’s departure. Newport of Tipperary are next up and manager Barry hopes the wealth of options in attack continues to be an asset.

“Maurice stepped up today. A key thing in hurling is having forwards that the other team have to worry about. We have more than one so that gives us options.”

While Bandon’s year is over, one loss wasn’t going to overshadow things, according to selector Don McCarthy. “We’re so proud of those lads, you couldn’t spoil it today,” he said. “They gave us phenomenal commitment all year.

THURLES SARSFIELDS 0-17 BALLYGUNNER 0-16

By Tomás McCarthy at Semple Stadium for GAA.ie

Pa Bourke edged Thurles Sarsfields into the Munster club semi finals with a dramatic late winner at Semple Stadium this afternoon.

Ballygunner fought back from four points in arrears to level the contest for the fourth occasion in injury time. In an exciting conclusion, Stephen O’Keeffe knocked away Tommy Doyle’s attempt for a ’65. Bourke held his nerve to strike his seventh point and earn a spot in the last four.

Stephen Cahill, Padraic Maher and Ronan Maher also made sizeable contributions to this slender Thurles win. Tommy Maher’s outfit had success from long range and sourced eight points from defenders and midfielders. Injuries to Richie Ruth and Michael Cahill will concern them however ahead of next weekend’s trip to Ennis.

Pauric Mahony, David O’Sullivan and Peter Hogan were best for the visitors who never allowed the Tipp champions out of their sights. Johnny Murphy issued ten yellow cards over the hour.

Both starting fifteens showed one change from their county final line-ups earlier in the month. Wayne Hutchinson got the nod ahead of Billy O’Keeffe while Rory Dwan started in place of Tommy Doyle. Throw in was delayed by ten minutes due to a late surge at the turnstiles.

Four unanswered points pushed the team in blue 0-7 to 0-4 ahead after sixteen minutes. Number nine Stephen Cahill was responsible for three long distance strikes. Padraic Maher and Philip Mahony acted as sweepers at opposite ends. A pair of Pauric Mahony frees cut the gap to one. Peter Hogan created a clearcut goal chance but Patrick McCormack parried it away. Pa Bourke and Stephen Lillis restored that three point lead before Mahony had the last word of the first thirty minutes (0-9 to 0-7).

Limerick referee Murphy signalled a Thurles penalty on the resumption after Philip Mahony held back Conor Lanigan. Pa Bourke didn’t rise the sliotar correctly however and Stephen O’Keeffe produced an easy save from his ground stroke. Cahill posted his fourth single from a difficult position.

The Gunners twice got within a point during the third quarter. The home team continue to raid from long distance however and sprinted four points clear with ten minutes left. Number seven Denis Maher registered his first before Pa Bourke added a brace.

The resilient visitors plugged away. Pauric Mahony, Peter Hogan and David O’Sullivan tied the match at 16 points all on 62 minutes. Sarsfields stayed composed and Bourke directed them towards a semi final meeting with Clare winners Ballyea.

Scorers for Thurles Sarsfields: P Bourke 0-7 (3fs, 1 65’), S Cahill 0-4, R Maher 0-2, S Lillis, D Maher, A McCormack, L Corbett 0-1 each.

AIB Munster Intermediate Club Football Championship Quarter-Final – Kenmare (Kerry) 4-25 Fethard (Tipperary) 0-5

Kenmare (Kerry) defeated Fethard (Tipperary) by 4-25 to 0-5 in the AIB Munster Intermediate Club Football Championship Quarter-Final on Sunday October 30th at Clonmel Sportsfield.

Fethard no match for Kenmare Shamrocks

By Jamie O’Flaherty for the Nationalist newspaper

Fethard 0-5 KENMARE SHAMROCKS 4-25

Fethard’s great run in this year’s Intermediate football series came to an end this afternoon after they were defeated by a very impressive Kenmare Shamrocks from Kerry in the Munster Intermediate championship.

After the heroics of last weekend when Fethard captured the county Intermediate title and secured senior status for next season, this was perhaps seen by many as an opportunity to relax somewhat and have a go at Kenmare but after a tough campaign this was simply a game too far. A tired looking Fethard side never reaching the heights that saw them beat Golden/Kilfeacle in the county final.

Kenmare Shamrocks, by contrast, were hugely impressive. They have extraordinary talents, demonstrating a level of ability that at times left Fethard breathless. With several players brimming with confidence following a successful run of results in the senior championship in Kerry with the Kenmare District side, where they reached the final, they were just too good.

They scored points from every angle and distance and crafted two beautiful first-half goals. A pitch-long move involving ten players, finished beautifully by Paul O’Connor, was the most spectacular, his shot leaving Paul Fitzgerald utterly defeated.

Fethard created half-chances in the second period but didn’t take them. Had nice spells of possession, but failed to capitalise on it. Threatened without ever really convincing they could breech the Kenmare defence. Brian Healy added two points to his first half score and Alan O’Connor notched a point of his own but their efforts were in vain as this tie was well and truly over by half-time.

Fethard will be disappointed with the outcome here but can reflect on an otherwise successful campaign and look ahead to competing with the best in next seasons Tipperary senior championship.

Scorers for Fethard: A O’Connor (0-1), C Sheehan (0-1), B Healy (0-3, 2 frees).

AIB Munster Senior Club Football Championship Quarter-Final – Dr. Crokes (Kerry) 1-14 Kilmurry / Ibrickane (Clare) 0-8

Dr. Crokes (Kerry) defeated Kilmurry / Ibrickane (Clare) by 1-14 to 0-8 in the AIB Munster Senior Club Football Championship Quarter-Final on Sunday October 30th at Quilty.

Colm Cooper the thread linking all that’s good about Dr Crokes

Report by John Fallon for the Irish Examiner newspaper

Dr Crokes (Kerry) 1-14 Kilmurry-Ibrickane (Clare) 0-8: The last time Dr Crokes travelled by road and sea from Killarney up to this scenic part of west Clare they got enough of a scare to ensure that they never took their foot off the pedal at Páirc Naoimh Mhuire yesterday.

Forewarned was enough to ensure that the Kerry champions were forearmed and after capably dealing with an early surge from the Clare champions, the Kerry visitors got on top in all the key positions and controlled the game from there to the end.

The ferry home from Killimer to Tarbert might have been rockier than anything they endured from a Kilmurry-Ibrickane side who won their 14th Clare crown just seven days earlier in a replay.

Kilmurry-Ibrickane, typically, never gave up but they needed to make the wind count in the opening half and they were in trouble when they turned around trailing by three points in an entertaining contest.

Four years ago Kimurry-Ibrickane pushed Dr Crokes every inch of the way at the same stage of the competition, but this time around the visitors kept pounding away even when they had the issue wrapped up.

The crowd of 2,557 at the splendid Quilty venue were served up a decent lunchtime encounter but Kilmurry-Ibrickane really needed a goal to inject some punch into their challenge.

But that never looked like coming against a Dr Crokes side who look poised to play a big part in the provincial and probably national arena in the coming months.

They have added a lot of young talent since completing a Munster three-in-a-row in 2013, and the likes of Gavin White and Micheal Burns showed yesterday they have a lot to offer.

Dáithí Casey, Kieran O’Leary, Brian Looney, Fionn Fitzgerald and Johnny Buckley (until injured), were also key figures but the thread linking them all was Colm ‘Gooch’ Cooper.

Time and again he sprayed balls all over the pitch, creating opportunities which nobody else in the ground could spot, and in the end he broke Kilmurry-Ibrickane’s hearts.

The key moment came when he spotted Brian Looney in space in front of goal and picked him out with a pinpoint pass which led to a foot-block and a penalty from Daithi Casey which yielded the only goal of the game six minutes after the restart for Crokes to up a double score lead.

“It was sublime, very few people saw that,” said Dr Crokes selector Harry O’Neill. “He is the most intelligent footballer I have seen in my life. He sees things that nobody else on the whole park probably saw that today. And a lot of fellas will look at the score, how much did he score, and he may not score a lot in the game. But when you pick through what’s happened, he has had a hand in nearly everything that’s happened. That’s the class of the man.”

Kilmurry-Ibrickane just did not have an answer to the barrage but manager Aidan Moloney was aggrieved that a lot of the decisions by Cork referee Kevin Murphy went against them when they were enjoying their best moments in the game in the opening quarter.

“There were a lot of tackles that he lot go in the first-half, that shouldn’t have been. He started making up a bit at the end. But I think when the game was in the melting pot for us we didn’t get what we deserved. We needed a good start to the second-half and we didn’t get it. When that goal went in it took a bit of the wind out of some of our players and we struggled from there on. Not enough of our players stood up today. They played well in the county final last week and the second game in the week was too much for them,” said Moloney.

They only managed one point from play in the opening half, with Shane Hickey getting their opening score from 40 yards. They didn’t score from play again until his brother Niall hit one in stoppage at the end of the game. In between, goalkeeper Ian McInerney landed three frees and their most dangerous forward, county player Keelan Sexton, also kicked three placed balls. You need a lot more than two points from play in a game to trouble the like of Dr Crokes.

The Kerry champions turned the screw after Casey’s superb penalty to the bottom left corner, with Burns adding a point before Cooper swung over three in a row, although selector O’Neill felt it was closer than the scoreline suggested.

“The scoreline would say it was a comfortable victory but it wasn’t easy out there. The Kilmurray lads came out of the blocks quite fast and they put it up to us. In the second-half we took more control of the game. And once we got the goal we kept driving at them. And we were relentless in what they were doing which was nice to see,” added O’Neill.

A visit from Tipp champions Loughmore-Castleiney is the next task for the Kerry champions, but this could yet turn out to be a long journey for the Crokes. Wouldn’t it be some way in 2017 to crown the 25th anniversary of their sole All-Ireland success by making it to Croke Park on St Patrick’s Day next March?

Don’t rule it out. They are off and running and there is plenty more in the tank for this side.

Scorers for Dr Crokes:D Casey 1-2 (1-0 pen), C Cooper 0-3 (2f), T Brosnan 0-2, K O’Leary 0-2, G O’Shea 0-1, B Looney 0-1, E Brosnan 0-1, J Kiely 0-1, M Burns 0-1.

Tipperary Senior Football Championship Final – Loughmore-Castleiney 1-9 Moyle Rovers 1-6

Loughmore-Castleiney defeated Moyle Rovers by 1-9 to 1-6 in the Tipperary Water County Senior Football Championship Final on Sunday October 30th at Leahy Park Cashel.

In a tight game, Loughmore led for most of the first half until Dara Ryan got in for a goal as half-time approached, putting them in front by 1-3 to 0-4. However, Cian Hennessy (man of the match and scorer of 1-2) responded with a goal almost immediately and at the interval, Loughmore led by 1-6 to 1-3. Scores were at a premium in the second half but Loughmore did enough to keep their noses in front and secure a deserved County Senior Football title.

Loughmore-Castleiney will now play Dr. Crokes (Kerry) in the Munster Club Semi-Final on Sunday November 13th at a Kerry venue.

Loughmore back at the top of Tipperary football

CHAMPIONS FOR THIRD TIME IN FOUR YEARS

Report by Jeddy Walsh (jeddy.walsh@nationalist.ie) for the Nationalist newspaper

LOUGHMORE/CASTLEINEY 1-9 MOYLE ROVERS 1-6

Loughmore/Castleiney are champions of Tipperary football for the third time in four years following their victory over Moyle Rovers in today’s county final played in Cashel.

The Mid side, captained by Liam McGrath, are fully deserving of this latest success, having beaten both of last year’s finalists, Clonmel Commercials and Moyle Rovers, on consecutive Sundays at Leahy Park.

Today’s decider won’t go down in the history books as a classic final by any means but Loughmore won’t be too concerned about that. They came to get their hands back on the O’Dwyer Cup and at no stage of the game did they look like being denied that by a Rovers side that played second fiddle all day.

Favourites beforehand after their one point win over Munster champions Commercials the previous Sunday, Loughmore, as expected, took the game by the scruff of the neck and after Moyle Rovers had missed a couple of early chances the Mid boys got on top.

Early points for Loughmore from Noel and Aidan McGrath put them ahead but they also had two early goal chances from Noel McGrath and John Ryan as Rovers struggled with their intensity. The Powerstown/Lisronagh side weren’t helping themselves though with three bad wides inside the first 10 minutes coupled with the loss through injury of wing-back Tadgh Fitzgerald after fielding magnificently in the middle of the park.

After ‘Man of the Match’ Cian Hennessy put his side three up, Stephen Quirke eventually got his side on the scoreboard from a 45 in the 12th minute.

Joe Hennessy with a superb point out on the right for Loughmore was matched by a Liam Boland point, Rovers’ only score from play in the opening period. And when Stephen Quirke made it 4-3 for Rovers with a free on 26 minutes it seemed the South Tipp side were doing well for themselves considering Loughmore seemed more dominant overall.

Suddenly the game exploded to life when substitute Dara Ryan took a pass from Liam Boland and finished brilliantly past Dominic Brennan for an unlikely 1-3 to 0-4 lead to Rovers as half-time approached.

But it is often said in sport that the most likely time to concede a goal is after scoring one and almost from the kick-out Cian Hennessy finished off a great Loughmore move when beating Ian Browne, although the veteran Rovers keeper did get a touch to it.

Quickly captain Liam McGrath and John McGrath added points against a stunned Rovers and Loughmore went in three to the good at the break.

A dour third quarter almost passed without a score before Liam Treacy made it 1-7 to 1-3 after 44 minutes with the first point of the second half. And but for a superb save from Ian Browne from Joseph Hennessy soon afterwards the game might have been put to bed early for Loughmore.

Another point from Liam McGrath, the minor who captained Tipp to All-Ireland glory in 2011, stretched the lead to five points as it looked increasingly likely he would be lifting the O’Dwyer Cup also before day’s end.

After that the game faded out as a contest and it never looked likely that Loughmore would be caught by a side that could only score two points from play all day, both from Liam Boland.

That second point from play by Boland was quickly cancelled by Cian Hennessy and with six minutes to go Rovers needed a miracle. Two further frees was all they could muster from Liam Boland and Stephen Quirke to bring it back to three points. But the better team were full value for their victory and deservedly are now back at the pinnacle of Tipperary football, and who can argue with a team that has won three titles in four years.

Finals are for winning, and they only give out one cup at the end of the game, regardless of the performance. While it wasn’t an outstanding game by any means in front of the 1,257 attendance, the winners did more than enough all day. Cian Hennessy was ‘Man of the Match’ for his overall performance and contributing 1-2, while John Meagher (supposedly joining the Tipp senior panel soon), Noel McGrath, John McGrath and Liam McGrath also stood out superbly. But it was a typical hard-working in-your-face Loughmore win based on team work and total commitment from start to finish.

For Rovers it will be hard pill to swallow, a second county final defeat in succession. If last year they came away from Semple Stadium feeling they had left it behind them, they cannot justifiably feel likewise after today. It seemed as a team they were swimming against the tide all year and the loss of their leader Peter Acheson to emigration mid year was a huge blow, followed by injuries to some key players such as Darragh Dwyer, Morgan Irwin and Ciaran Kenrick. They suffered a further early blow today with Tadgh Fitzgerald’s loss. Having said that they did tremendously well to get back to the county decider. But today, they needed every crumb going to trouble Loughmore and they didn’t do themselves any favours with some woeful misses for frees and play over the hour, 13 in all.

Alan Campbell was a class act at the heart of defence and Danny Owens gave his all, but 1-6 over the hour with just two points from play was never going to be enough for their first county win since 2009. With only two contributing to the scoreboard on the day, it would always be an uphill battle. It will be back to the drawingboard once more at Monroe. The talent is there no doubt and if the work ethic and never-say-die commitment of Loughmore/Castleiney as an true example can be matched going forward, their day too will come soon.

Loughmore/Castleiney: Dominic Brennan, Lorcan Egan, John Meagher, Tomás McGrath, John Ryan, Ciaran McGrath, Joseph Hennessy (0-1), Noel McGrath (0-1), John McGrath (0-1), Brian McGrath, Liam Treacy (0-1), Aidan McGrath (0-1), Liam McGrath (Capt, O-2), Evan Sweeney, Cian Hennessy (1-2)
Subs: Willie Eviston for Noel McGrath (black card, 56 minutes); Eamonn Connolly for Sweeney (58 minutes).

Moyle Rovers: Ian Browne, Paddy Morrissey, Alan Campbell, Danny Lyne (Capt), David McGrath, Ross Mulcahy, Tadgh Fitzgerald, Luke Boland, Danny Owens, Diarmuid Foley, Stephen Quirke (0-3, 0-1×45, 0-2F), Shane Foley, Liam Boland (0-3, 0-1F), Craig Condon, Thomas Hill
Subs: Martin Dunne for Condon (50 minutes).

Referee: David Grogan (Aherlow)

There will be new champions crowned on Sunday next in Leahy Park, Cashel when Loughmore-Castleiney and Moyle Rovers meet in the Tipperary Water Co. Senior Football Final with throw in at 2.30pm.

Both sides emerged victorious from the semi-finals last Sunday to contest for the title in what should be an intriguing afternoon of action. Moyle Rovers are back in the final hoping to make amends for the one point defeat they suffered at the hands of Clonmel Commercials at the same stage last year and claim their first title since 2009 when Liam Cronin captained his side to victory. Now Liam is on the line as he and his fellow management team look to captain Danny Lyne to go one step further this year and lift the cup.

The wait hasn’t been so long for Loughmore-Castleiney who make their first appearance in the county decider since 2014 when they also completed the double by retaining their title. David Kennedy was captain in 2014 and Liam McGrath will be hoping to do the same on Sunday next.

It has been a busy few days for Moyle Rovers as they first saw off the challenge of Aherlow Gaels in the quarter-final last Wednesday night, 2-11 to 0-13 in Ballyporeen which earned them to right to meet Kilsheelan-Kilcash in the semi-final last Sunday in Cahir. In what was a one sided affair Moyle Rovers were very comfortable winners on a score line of 4-14 to 0-06, thanks to a brace of first half goals from Diarmuid Foley and one each from Liam Boland and Stephen Quirke in the second half.

Not as easy for Loughmore-Castleiney in Boherlahan as they had the reigning champions Clonmel Commercials to contend with. In a very close and thrilling game the Mid men came through as narrow victors 0-9 to 0-8 to set up the clash with Moyle Rovers.

Dr. Harty Cup Hurling – Our Ladys Templemore 1-23 St. Flannans 1-12

Dr. Harty Cup

Our Ladys Templemore 1-23 St. Flannans 1-12

Report by Ed Donnelly (info.munster@gaa.ie)

Our Lady’s Templemore proved too strong for St. Flannans in Tuesday’s Group F encounter in the Dr. Harty Cup played at a sunny MacDonagh Park Nenagh.

With a new format in place, those schools in a two team group are already guaranteed a place in the last 16 of the competition. So this game was all about determining who would be progressing as the group winner and in theory, get a more favourable draw in the knockout stages.

The ultimate result in this game wasn’t in doubt from an early stage as Templemore took control from the beginning. After a couple of early wides, Our Lady’s got off the mark as Brian McGrath set up Jerry Kelly for a point from play, the first of five for the wing-forward. St. Flannans opened their account with a free courtesy of Tom O’Rourke in the eighth minute.

Templemore continued to dominate in all sectors except one, the scoreboard. By the 20th minute, Templemore were three points up, 0-5 to 0-2 but had recorded 10 wides which illustrated their dominance in general play. Templemore’s accuracy improved in the last ten minutes of the first half, finding their range with five of their last six shots to go in at the interval in front by 0-10 to 0-3.

Templemore’s play upon the resumption was more direct and by the end of the third quarter, they led by 0-18 to 0-6 with Jerry Kelly, Brian McGrath and Lyndon Fairbrother scoring at will. To St. Flannans credit, they were never going to win this game but showed commendable spirit throughout and were rewarded in the 46th minute when Gearoid Cahill ghosted in behind the Templemore full-back line to raise the green flag. This goal began a mini-revival for the Clare school as they accounted for six of the next nine points over the following 10 minutes to leave the score at 0-22 to 1-12 heading in to the last five minutes.

St. Flannans needed another goal to try and get back in to this game but alas, the goal went the way of Our Lady’s when substitute Andrew Ormond scored from close range in the 56th minute. The Templemore side would add one further point before the final whistle sounded with Our Lady’s Templemore running out winners by 1-23 to 1-12. Templemore also won the wide count, accounting for 15 as compared to 8 for Flannans.
