Kerry defeated Down by 0-22 to 0-6 in the Allianz Football League Division 1 on Sunday February 28th at Páirc Esler, Newry.

Allianz Football League Division 1: Down 0-6 Kerry 0-22

By Orla Bannon in Newry for

Kerry collected a first Allianz League win of the season with a comfortable stroll in Páirc Esler which plunged Down deeper into relegation trouble. It was an easy game for the Kingdom, who had Kieran Donaghy and Colm Cooper making their first appearances of 2016, Donaghy starting in place of the injured David Moran.

Bryan Sheehan top-scored with 0-6 in a game played with no intensity and Down went 30 minutes without scoring either side of half time. Kerry started brightly with Darran O’Sullivan chipping over the first of his three first-half points after 30 seconds. Full-forward Alan Fitzgerald landed a second Kerry point in the eighth minute and Bryan Sheehan put the visitors 0-3 ahead when he converted a free, having missed from an identical position moments earlier.

Down struggled to convert their shots at goal, hitting three first-half wides and dropping the same number short into Brendan Kealy’s hands. Connaire Harrison missed a simple free but made amends in the 14th minute to get Down on the scoreboard. It was the start of Down’s best spell in the game – they landed three points in four minutes to draw level with another Harrison free and a superb left-footed point from Barry O’Hagan. However Kerry reeled off six unanswered points before the break to go in 0-9 to 0-3 up.

O’Sullivan’s pace wreaked havoc in the Down defence and he landed two with Sheehan also scoring from a free and from play. Stephen O’Brien and Alan Fitzgerald (free) were the Kingdom’s other scorers and the damage could have been greater for Down, had Paul Murphy not fluffed an easy goal chance just before the interval. Sheehan nailed a 45 after the restart before Conor Maginn ended a 30-minute scoring drought for the Mournemen in the 45th minute.

Kerry brought on Colm Cooper for his first appearance of 2016 and within seconds he tapped over a close-range free to get his season up and running. O’Sullivan and O’Hagan traded points before the former almost found the net, his shot well blocked by goalkeeper Michael Cunningham with the rebound also cleared off the line.

Sheehan continued to punish Down indiscretions with frees, points and 45s while Kerry also had the luxury of giving relaxing runouts to Tommy Walsh and Barry John Keane, who scored 0-3. Brendan O’Sullivan also scored two late points after coming off the bench while ‘Gooch’ finished with a trademark curling left-footed shot in a pleasing afternoon for Kerry boss Éamonn Fitzmaurice.

Unbeaten Tipp escape Mullingar

Westmeath 0-11 Tipperary 1-8

Report from the Irish Independent web site

Tipperary maintained their unbeaten start in Mullingar yesterday as hosts Westmeath picked up their first point of the campaign in a game which only came to life in the second half. The first half was a scrappy affair with both sides guilty of poor shooting and an array of loose passing.

One ambitious cross-field pass from Westmeath’s Ray Connellan on 15 minutes was intercepted by Josh Keane. He fed Peter Acheson, who teed up Robbie Kiely for the only goal of the contest, to put the visitors ahead by 1-1 to 0-2. The home team had more possession during the remainder of the half but their forwards lacked conviction.

Two converted frees by John Heslin, either side of a point from centre half-back Kieran Martin, nudged Westmeath ahead but Shane Leahy equalised with a great point seconds before half-time. The sides were tied at the interval, 0-5 to 1-2.

The home team started the second half brightly with corner-forward John Connellan pointing twice and team-mate John Egan adding another. Tipperary quickly equalised, two of their points coming within a minute from midfielder Alan Maloney and the other from a free by Conor Sweeney. Neither side was able to pull away, but Westmeath looked the likely winners.

However, converted frees from Michael Quinlivan and Maloney levelled the contest. Six minutes’ added time was played with Paul Sharry narrowly missing a last-gasp ’45’ to win for Westmeath.

Easy win for St Brendan’s as they conquer Clonmel for their 21st Corn Uí Mhuirí win

St Brendan’s, Killarney 5-21 High School Clonmel 0-7

Report from the Irish Examiner newspaper

St Brendan’s have won their 21st Corn Uí Mhuirí final in the same devastating fashion in which they tore through all other comers this year. They scored two goals in the opening two-and-a-half minutes and from that point on it was just a matter of how much they would win by.They never took their foot off the gas, compiling 3-10, all from play, in the first-half, and adding 2-11 in the second.

That accounted for the highest total of the year by ‘The Sem’, while their usually stingy defence only leaked one point late in the second-half. It was as one-sided a final as you’ll see, and brought back some memories of Kerry’s All-Ireland Minor football victory over Tipperary last September. Clonmel’s Michael O’Reilly did get the first score of the game, a free, within a minute of the throw-in but the next two plays effectively ended the underdogs’ hopes.

After only 90 seconds Evan Cronin had coolly billowed the net, grabbing Dara Moynihan’s precision high ball and side-stepping his marker to score. Then, only 45 seconds after that, Michael Casey prodded to the net, assisted by David Clifford’s pass. They could’ve had more goals too. Matt Barlow dived to block Peter McCarthy’s goalbound effort in the 10th minute, while Clonmel had a chance of their own through Michael Barlow, who saw his effort deflected over.

A further Barlow point left Clonmel 2-3 to 0-3 in arrears and, from there, The Sem continued to extend their advantage. Moynihan, wing-back David Naughton, Casey and Shaw, with a goal chance, all pointed for a nine- point lead. Then David Clifford took over, scoring 1-2 in succession, culminating with a 28th-minute tap-in goal after Aidan Tobin saved Cronin’s initial shot. Leading 3-10 to 0-6 at the break, St Brendan’s kicked on by scoring 1-11 without reply in 30 second- half minutes.

Clifford got three points of that total, while Cronin, Shaw, Lee O’Donoghue and Adam O’Shea all contributed a pair of points. The goal, in the 58th-minute, came when substitute Donnchadh O’Sullivan won and converted a penalty. Dara Ryan chalked up Clonmel’s only post-interval point in second-half injury-time, but William Courtney stormed downfield to add a fifth and final goal with the final kick.

Scorers for St Brendan’s: D Clifford (1-5, two frees); E Cronin (1-3); M Casey (1-2); D Shaw (0-5); D O’Sullivan (pen), W Courtney (1-0 each); L O’Donoghue (1 45), A O’Shea (0-2 each); D Moynihan, D Naughton (0-1 each).

St Brendan’s absolutely hammered Clonmel to claim another Corn Uí Mhuirí title

Munster Corn Ui Mhuiri Final

St Brendan’s College Killarney 5-21 HS Clonmel 0-7

Report from

ST BRENDAN’S COLLEGE Killarney captured their 21st Corn Uí Mhuirí title at Mallow this afternoon and the scoreline speaks for itself.
The game was probably over as a contest inside the opening few minutes when the Sem’s lethal strike force notched two goals in as many minutes.

Ironically Clonmel got the opening score when Mark Kehoe fetched the throw in and was fouled going through, and Michael O’Reilly converted the free. St Brendan’s response was immediate and deadly as Dara Moynihan picked up a ball that should have been cleared and parted to Evan Cronin, who drilled the ball low to the Clonmel net. Then, from the kick-out David Clifford fed corner forward Michael Casey, who slipped the ball low to the net.

Clonmel had no answer to Billy Courtney and Lee O’Donoghue at midfield, and this meant that the St Brendan’s potent attack simply toyed with the Clonmel defence and it could have been much worse. Points flowed from the boot of Clifford and the towering David Shaw, who enjoyed too much freedom once fullback Stephen Ryan was black-carded in the 25th minute. David Clifford finished to the net just before half time and St Brendan’s retired 3-10 to 0-6 at the interval.

The game fizzled out in the second half as St Brendan’s added six unanswered points inside the opening 10 minutes and it was as one-sided a contest as you are likely to see at this level. Two late goals from William Courtney and another from the penalty spot by Donnchadh O’Sullivan only emphasized the gulf in class between the sides. St Brendan’s look potential Hogan Cup contenders, though they have yet to be tested.

Scorers: St Brendan’s College Killarney: D Clifford 1-5 ( 0-2 frees), E Cronin 1-3, M Casey 1-2, D Shaw 0-5, W Courtney and Donnchadh O’Sullivan (pen) 1-0 each, L O’Donoghue 0-2 ( 0-1 45), A O’Shea 0-2, D Naughton and D Moynihan 0-1 each:

Allianz Hurling League Division 1A – Kilkenny 2-17 Tipperary 0-18

Kilkenny defeated Tipperary by 2-17 to 0-18 in the Allianz Hurling League Division 1A on Sunday February 21st at Nowlan Park Kilkenny.

By Jackie Cahill for

Two late Kevin Kelly goals handed Kilkenny victory over arch-rivals Tipperary at Nowlan Park on Sunday afternoon. The Cats bounced back from last weekend’s defeat against holders Waterford to kickstart their Allianz Hurling League Division 1A campaign in front of 10,892 spectators.

For Kilkenny, this is a hugely significant victory achieved without a host of recognised stars, and against a Tipp side that saw off Dublin by 14 points in their opening fixture. Kilkenny’s win also ensures that Tipp’s dismal record against the Noresiders since 2010 continues.

In 13 competitive League and championship fixtures since Tipp denied the Cats five-in-a-row All-Ireland titles, they have won just two and on paper at least, this was one they would have felt confident of winning. Brian Cody will have left the venue today feeling deeply satisfied with the depth in his panel as forwards Kelly and Man-of-the-Match James Maher put their hands up for long-term inclusion in his starting line-up.

Kelly’s two clinical goals put this one to bed for Kilkenny as Maher chipped in with four points. Hurler of the Year TJ Reid was also mightily impressive for the hosts, collecting ten points. For Tipp, John ‘Bubbles’ O’Dwyer was their standout performer with a haul of nine points and while other Premier County players produced some nice cameo moments, Kilkenny had the greater stomach for the fight.

The Kilkenny psychological hex is one that Tipp have struggled to shake off for a long time now and this defeat won’t help their cause. Kilkenny could also afford the luxury of 13 wides and in a hard-hitting encounter, they went in just a point down at half-time, 0-8 to 0-9, having played against the breeze.

Goal chances came and went at either end of the pitch before Kelly struck for that late, decisive brace. Walter Walsh’s delivery saw sub Jonjo Farrell get in behind Cathal Barrett, who slipped, and Kelly finished Farrell’s pass from close range. Kelly found the net with a low strike past Darren Gleeson in the third minute of stoppage time as Kilkenny laid down an early-season marker.

Scorers for Kilkenny: TJ Reid 0-10 (6f, 1 65), K Kelly 2-1, J Maher 0-4, P Walsh 01, W Walsh 0-1

Scorers for Tipperary: J O’Dwyer 0-9 (3f, 2 65s), J McGrath 0-4 (1f), C Kenny 0-2, N McGrath 0-2, M Breen 0-1.

Allianz Hurling League Division 1B – Limerick 1-19 Kerry 1-15

Limerick defeated Kerry by 1-19 to 1-15 in the Allianz Hurling League Division 1B on Sunday February 21st at Fitzgerald Stadium Killarney.

D1B: Limerick hold off brave Kerry in Killarney

Report from

Despite coming up short of Limerick at Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday afternoon, the hurlers of Kerry gave an excellent account of themselves, showcasing their ability to compete at this level. The Division IIA champions began with a stunning victory over Laois last weekend, and they recovered from a 12-point deficit after just 20 minutes here to lose by just four at the end.

Limerick, backed by a powerful breeze in the first half, were somewhat fortunate to lead 1-16 to 1-5 at half-time but a superb Kerry second half display restricted Limerick to just three points in the second period, and left them gasping for breath in the closing stages before the Treaty County hung on to make it two wins from two in Division IB.

Limerick led 0-5 to 0-2 after 12 minutes, Cian Lynch, Barry Nash and Declan Hannon all on the scoreboard. Then, a goal from Hannon directly from a placed ball at the end of the first quarter left them 1-7 to 0-2 ahead and seemingly pulling away. Kerry’s industry and endeavour wasn’t quite reflected on the scoreboard as Limerick added scores to lead 1-11 to 0-2 after 20 minutes, an ominously large advantage from a Kerry perspective.

However, Kerry, managed by Limerick legend Ciarán Carey, are made of stern stuff and when points from Michael O’Leary and Shane Nolan were followed by a Mikey Boyle goal, they trailed by just seven points. However, Limerick reeled off five of the next six points to lead 1-16 to 1-5 at the interval.

Heavy rain fell during the second half but Kerry were determined to get back into the game and they slowly worked their way back, Jack Goulding, John Egan and Shane Nolan (frees) all among their scorers as they reduced the arrears to six, 1-18 to 1-12, by the 65th minute.

Seán Tobin got Limerick’s only point from play in the second half to push them seven clear as the game entered injury-time but Kerry finished strongly, knocking over three points in the remaining minutes to go down fighting and leave the clear impression that they will fight tooth and nail for their survival in IB this year.

Allianz Hurling League Division 1B – Clare 0-18 Wexford 1-11

Clare defeated Wexford by 0-18 to 1-11 in the Allianz Hurling League Division 1B on Sunday February 21st at Innovate Wexford Park.

D1B: Clare come good to defeat Wexford

Report from

Clare came good in the end to defeat Wexford in an entertaining encounter at Innovate Wexford Park on Sunday afternoon. Despite having the benefit of a strong wind in the first half, Wexford struggled for much of it and only led at the break thanks to a fine penalty a few minutes before half-time from goalkeeper Mark Fanning. That left it 1-6 to 0-7 going in.

The lead swelled to four points in the third quarter but Clare gradually chipped away at Wexford and took firm control of the game in the final quarter, hitting nine of the final 10 points, including five without reply in the last few minutes, to take a valuable victory away from the south-east.

Wexford, backed by the strong breeze, led 0-4 to 0-1 after 10 minutes but six in a row from Clare, including a series of placed balls from Colin Ryan and scores from Conor McGrath and John Conlon, had them 0-7 to 0-4 ahead by the 28th minute. Fanning’s powerfully struck penalty in the 33rd minute followed Wexford points from Eoin Moore and David Dunne, and that burst of 1-2 helped Liam Dunne’s side into a much needed 1-6 to 0-7 interval lead.

After some early sparring in the second half, Wexford moved four clear, leading 1-10 to 0-9 after 50 minutes, thanks to two frees in a row from Harry Kehoe. However, that was the beginning of the end of their challenge, as Clare took control shortly afterwards. Now backed by the wind, Clare drew level following points from Ryan (free), David Reidy and Bobby Duggan. A Kehoe free briefly put Wexford back in the lead in the 64th minute, but Clare were dominant by now and made it count in the closing minutes.

Points from Jack Browne, Bobby Duggan and three from the ruthlessly efficient Colin Ryan in the last five minutes saw Clare level and then move clear of Wexford to take the win. Clare now have two wins from two in Division IB and are firmly in the promotion hunt. Wexford have lost two on the bounce, but will be expected to do well in their remaining fixtures, against Laois, Kerry and Offaly.

Scorers for Wexford: Harry Kehoe 0-6 (6f), Mark Fanning 1-0 (1-0 pen), David Dunne 0-2, Podge Doran 0-1, Eoin Moore 0-1, Andrew Shore 0-1

Scorers for Clare: Colin Ryan 0-10 (8f, 0-1 ’65), Conor McGrath 0-2, Jack Browne 0-2, Bobby Duggan 0-2, John Conlon 0-1, David Reidy 0-1

Allianz Hurling League Division 1A – Waterford 0-20 Cork 1-14

Waterford defeated Cork by 0-20 to 1-14 in the Allianz Hurling League Division 1A on Saturday February 20th at Pairc Ui Rinn.

D1A: Waterford too good once again for Rebels

By Alan O’Connell for

Pat Horgan goaled a late free but Cork slumped to their second defeat of the campaign as reigning champions Waterford marched on at Páirc Uí Rinn. It was Waterford’s second win in less than a week, after they great effort against Kilkenny last Sunday, and they were led to victory by their All-Ireland minor winning contingent from 2013.

Austin Gleeson was a star in the half-back line again, and his late point ensured victory – that came directly after Maurice Shanahan was given a straight red for an off-the-ball incident. Cork’s Alan Cadogan was also sent-off in a feisty ending to the match but despite Horgan’s goal Waterford held on. Waterford played into a slight breeze in the first-half, but still held a 0-11 to 0-7 lead at the break.

Horgan got Cork’s account up and running after seven minutes – Kevin Moran had earlier angled over an effort from the touchline. Waterford hit three in a row, with Shanahan finding his range, Darragh Fives advanced from the half-back line to add his name to the scoreline and Gleeson’s effort from distance was a fantastic score.

Horgan and Shanahan exchanged frees before Daniel Kearney and Brian Lawton slotted as they reduced the arrears to the minimum, 0-5 to 0-4 after 16 minutes. Jamie Barron got a deserved point, and further efforts from Shanahan and Patrick Curran (both two) and a smart point from Jake Dillon ensured Waterford were in the ascendency at the break. But Horgan kept Cork in it with four first-half points. He hit their first of the second-half, five minutes in but Shanahan and Colin Dunford added to Waterford’s tally. Waterford shot three in a row with Barron’s second giving them a 0-16 to 0-8 lead. But Cork didn’t drop their heads.

Horgan and Brian Lawton notched efforts before a tremendous Aidan Walsh sideline brought the home-faithful to their feet. Dunford’s disputed point just before the hour re-established Waterford’s seven-point lead but Conor Lehane hit two in a row. Shanahan got his marching orders in the 66th minute, and after Gleeson pointed a free, Cadogan was also sent-off. Horgan goaled but Waterford had enough.
