Official Opening of new Munster GAA Headquarters

September 29, 2012 @ 4:30 pm - 5:30 pm

The official opening of the new Munster GAA Headquarters at Castletroy Limerick took place this afternoon (Saturday September 29th). The ceremony was performed by Liam O’Neill, Uachtarán Chumann Lúthchleas Gael in the presence of Munster GAA Chairman Sean Walsh and a large gathering of Gaels from across the province.

The purpose built 12,000 square foot facility will provide a home for all GAA activities in the province of Munster. In addition to the Coaching and Administration staff of Munster GAA, office space will be provided for other GAA affiliated bodies including Handball, Ladies Football and Camogie.

Munster GAA Chairman Sean Walsh speaking at the official opening said “We are delighted today to officially open this iconic building which will serve the needs of Munster GAA for many years. Great credit is due to all those officers and delegates past and present who helped to achieve the objective of building a facility to provide a home for all GAA activities in the province of Munster”.

The building designed by Leydon, Hassett and Associates Architects and built by Griffin Brothers Construction took just over a year to complete and provided employment for 15 workers at its peak. This follows on from the contribution the GAA has made to the construction industry in Munster over the last 4 years which is valued at over €40 million.

The project was completed under budget and the total cost including site purchase was under €3.5 million. In keeping with the original project brief issued by the Munster Council, the project was completely funded from a restructuring of Munster GAA’s operating cash flows and had no impact on the funding provided to Clubs, Counties and other GAA affiliated bodies. Throughout the project 72% of revenues generated were redistributed to these bodies.

Speakers at today’s launch included Liam O’Neill, Sean Walsh, Munster GAA CEO Pat Fitzgerald, Paddy Leydon of Leydon, Hassett and Associates Architects and master of ceremonies Munster GAA PRO Ed Donnelly.
