Munster Senior Hurling Final – Tipperary 7-19 Waterford 0-19

Déise hammered in one-sided Munster decider

Sunday, July 10, 2011 – 05:13 PM

From the Irish Examiner newspaper

Tipperary 7-19 Waterford 0-19

Tipperary thumped Waterford by 21 points as they collected their third Munster SHC title in four years. Lar Corbett scored 4-4 and captain Eoin Kelly (2-6) and Seamus Callanan (1-0) also found the net in an embarrassingly one-sided final. Declan Ryan’s men tallied up the biggest score in a Munster hurling decider since Cork beat Waterford (5-31 to 3-6) back in 1982. There were four goals in a sublime six-minute spell before half-time; Tipp were coasting at 5-10 to 0-8 at the break. The 36,654 spectators present at Páirc Uí Chaoimh witnessed a limp display from Waterford, who did improve in the second period and their young free-taker Pauric Mahony finished with 0-13.

It was a tour de force from the All-Ireland champions on a day when their long-serving goalkeeper Brendan Cummins equalled Christy Ring’s Championship appearances record of 65. Waterford simply had no answer to the movement and precise shooting of the Tipperary forwards, who profited from the pinpoint deliveries of Shane McGrath, Padraic Maher and Gearoid Ryan. Waterford manager Davy Fitzgerald got his tactics all wrong and his defence was left badly exposed, Jerome Maher having a nightmare debut trailing 2010 Hurler of the Year Corbett. Michael ‘Brick’ Walsh was initially moved into the full-back line and Kevin Moran stationed at centre-back, but Tipp’s speed off the mark and interchanging of positions left the Déise spellbound. Jerome Maher fouled Corbett for a second minute free that Eoin Kelly knocked over and John O’Brien swung over the second point, with Shane McGrath soaring high for a couple of inspirational catches. The game was only four minutes’ old when Padraic Maher cleared downfield, Corbett collected the ball on the bounce and his close range shot beat goalkeeper Clinton Hennessy for the first goal.

The 19-year-old Pauric Mahony accounted for six of Waterford’s eight first half points, slotting his first after a foul on an increasingly frustrated John Mullane. It was the only resistance last year’s Munster champions could provide, with their forwards starved of possession and Stephen Molumphy and company guilty of overrunning the ball at times. By the midpoint of the half Tipp were 1-8 to 0-3 clear, O’Brien, Noel McGrath, Corbett (0-2) and Kelly (0-2) all adding points. Mullane and Brian O’Sullivan won frees for Mahony to knock over, with veteran defender Tony Browne, still turning it on at 38, landing Waterford’s first point from play in the 20th minute. Corbett pointed on the turn and a superb handpass from a falling Patrick Maher set up O’Brien for his third score. Mahony and Shane O’Sullivan kept the gap at seven points.

It was down to six when Mahony tapped over a free, but Shane Walsh’s preceding run should had led to something more. Mullane also fluffed a shot after scampering away from Paddy Stapleton. But Tipp’s sudden avalanche of late goals left Waterford out of contention with 35 minutes still remaining. The in-form Kelly started the glut of goals in the 32nd minute, gathering a clever pass from Patrick Maher and shooting into the bottom left corner of the net. Corbett crashed home a high drive as another long ball caused problems for the struggling Waterford rearguard. There was no mercy shown in injury-time, Patrick Maher providing the assist again for Seamus Callanan to register the fourth. There was a sense of disbelief as Stapleton and Gearoid Ryan combined to launch an attack and Corbett read the break to complete his hat-trick.

Mahony responded with a last-gasp free, leaving the margin at 17 points as the sides headed for the dressing rooms. Having brought Jamie Nagle on for newcomer Maher, Fitzgerald made three more substitutions at the interval as Maurice Shanahan, Liam Lawlor and David O’Sullivan were introduced. There was no sign of Tipp easing their foot off the pedal, the second half resuming with a successful free from Kelly and Corbett’s fourth point from play. At least there was more bite to the exchanges, Mahony converting two frees before Shanahan set him up for his first point from play. Gearoid Ryan got on the scoresheet and Tipp skipper Kelly showed some fine touches in open play, first punishing some poor defending to take his tally to 1-5. The Mullinahone ace then broke the ball into his path to smash over from the right. Mahony was unerring with frees at the other end, and help came in the form of successive scores from Mullane and Shane Walsh.

Before that, Hennessy did well to save a loose shot from Callanan and a rousing block from Browne showed Waterford had no intentions of giving up. But Kelly got Tipp back on the goal-scoring trail, driving the ball home after Ryan had knocked an inviting ball forward. Two Mahony frees sandwiched a trademark sideline cut from Noel McGrath, with the Premier County purring along up to the hour mark. Moran, Browne and ‘Brick’ Walsh kept plugging away from the well-beaten Déise, whose All-Ireland hopes now hinge on a quarter-final clash with Galway in two weeks’ time. Tipp corner back Michael Cahill showed great poise in front of his goal to initiate a counter attack which led to substitute Pa Bourke scoring. The scoreboard now stood at 6-17 to 0-16.

Cummins, who made his Championship bow against Waterford 16 years ago, came off to rapturous applause when Ryan took the opportunity to replace him with Darren Gleeson. As if to rub salt into the already gaping wounds, two minutes later, Corbett flashed a great groundstroke into the net. The corner forward followed the flight of a free in from Conor O’Mahony and sent a crisp shot in from the left. Tipp’s stunning passage through to next month’s All-Ireland semi-finals was completed by late points from substitutes Pa Bourke and Shane Bourke. Having given Mahony 12 pointed frees in all, their discipline is one obvious area that they will have to work on. Waterford will need a few days to recover from the shocking nature of their performance, late points from Molumphy and Shanahan giving them scant consolation after their Leeside lashing.

Munster GAA Hurling Championship Final

Tipperary 7-19 Waterford 0-19

What can be said about the performance of Tipperary, who defeated a demoralised Waterford time by 21 points in the Munster Senior Hurling final to send out a message to all other teams remaining in the Championship. A total of 7-13 was scored from play by the Premier County and Lar Corbett and Eoin Kelly were untouchable. All the damage was done in the first half when four goals were scored in as many minutes to leave the gap at 17 points at the break. Corbett capped off a fine display of quality forward play when he clocked up an impressive 4-4 over the 70 minutes.

The writing looked to be on the wall for Waterford with just five minutes gone. A long ball Pádraic Maher was fired into the direction of Corbett. Young full-back Jerome Maher was caught ball watching and Player of the Year Corbett did not need a second invitation to blast home the first goal of the game. Pauric Mahony responded quickly for the Déise from a free but there was a lack of decent ball going into the Waterford forward line for them to build on. Tipp’s John O’Brien was causing all sorts of problems by drifting from the full forward line and bringing other forwards into the play. Noel McGrath opened his account and it looked like Delcan Ryan’s men were pulling away at this early stage. Mahony scored another two frees for Waterford but it still looked like one-way traffic. Two points each from Corbett and Kelly extended their lead before Tony Browne and Mahony pegged back a score each to make it 1-9 to 0-5.Waterford’s defence was all over the place while their forwards were not much better. John Mullane, who only managed 0-1 for the day, scuffled an easy chance just before the half hour mark as he was caught in two minds whether or not to go for the goal or the simple point.

Then the madness unfolded. Four goals in as many minutes killed Davy Fitzgerald’s chance of retaining the Munster title and this was all before half-time. Captain Eoin Kelly was the first to opened the flood gates on 31 minutes as he got his first goal and Tipp’s second. A great ball from ‘Bonnar’ Maher was placed into the path of Kelly and he did the rest. Corbett was next up. A long ball up the pitch was not dealt with by the Waterford defence and Corbett was there to pick up the pieces and finished in ease. Things got worse when Seamus Callanan got off the mark on 35 minutes. With no score to his name so far, the Déise’s defence just fell apart and Patrick Maher fisted a simple hand pass to wing-forward Callanan who finished easily. But the devastation was not complete until Corbett came in to finish off the riot in front of goal and collected his hat-trick as well. Mahony managed to get a free before the break but the sides went in 5-10 to 0-8.

Kelly and Corbett opened the second half with a point each but the game was already over at that stage. Fitzgerald made three changes at the break but no miracle was going to happen. One bright spark for the day was the free taking of Mahony. It looked like it would have got worse for the Déise when Callanan was clean through for his second of the day but a great save from Clinton Hennessy was a plus on the Waterford review of the game. It was 20 minutes after the restart when Kelly got his second goal of the game and showed that the Tipp forwards did not want to ease up even though they were home and dry. Noel McGrath got a great sideline ball to add to his earlier point and they started to rub salt into the wounds of a dejected Waterford side.

Brendan Cummins was taken off to a huge roar from the Tipperary supports after he levelled the all time record for most appearances in the Championship, which was held by the Cork hurling great Christy Ring. Five minutes remaining and the goal scoring was complete. Lar Corbett, still as bright as ever, popped up to take his total to 4-4 for the day and show that he is one of the best in the business at what he does. A massive 21 points separated the sides come the final whistle and a lot of soul searching will need to be done in the Waterford camp but Tipperary are Munster champions and look hot favourites to be crowned All-Ireland Champions for the second year running.

Tipperary: Lar Corbett 4-04, Eoin Kelly 2-06 (0-03f), Seamus Callanan 1-00, John O’Brien 0-03, Noel McGrath (0-01sl), Pa Bourke 0-02 each, Gearoid Ryan, Shane Bourke 0-01 each.

Waterford: Pauric Mahony 0-13 (0-12f), Tony Browne, Shane O’Sullivan, John Mullane , Shane Walsh, Stephen Molumphy, Maurice Shanahan 0-01 each.

Useful Information

Clare have failed to record a Munster Championship victory in 6 of the last 7 seasons.

Clare have not drawn a match in the Munster Senior Hurling Championship since finishing level with Tipperary in 1999.

Waterford have qualified for 8 of the last 14 Munster Finals including the last 3 (1998, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011). This is in contrast to the previous 31 Munster Finals between 1967 and 1997 during which time Waterford qualified just 3 times, losing on each occasion in 1982, 1983 and 1989).

Cork will not be involved in either the 2011 Munster Minor Hurling or 2011 Munster Senior Hurling Final for the second time in three years. Previous to 2009, the last time a Cork team were not represented on Munster Hurling Final day was 1997.

Waterford is the only Munster county to have at least 1 victory in the last 3 Munster Senior Hurling Championships.

John Mullane’s first goal for Waterford in the 2011 Munster Semi-Final v Limerick snapped a record of 153 minutes with scoring a goal against Limerick in the Munster Championship.

Cork and Tipperary proved to have the meanest defenses in the 2011 Allianz Hurling League, conceding 5 goals each. Limerick conceded 6 goals and Waterford 7 goals putting those 4 Munster counties at the top of the charts when it comes to the least concession of goals in Divisions 1 and 2. Oddly, Allianz Hurling League Division 1 champions Dublin conceded 14 goals during their campaign, an amount exceeded by only Down and Kerry in the top 2 divisions of the Allianz Hurling League.

The improvement in the defences of Munster counties can be attributed to the decline in the average scores per match in the last 3 seasons in the Munster Senior Hurling Championship –

2008 (40 scores per match), 2009 (36 scores per match), 2010 (34 scores per match).

Over the last 2 seasons (2009 and 2010), Semple Stadium Thurles has played host to 7 of the 10 Munster Senior Hurling Championship matches played. Pairc Ui Chaoimh hosted 2 matches while Pairc na nGael in Limerick hosted 1 game.

Cork lost their 3 away matches in the Allianz Hurling League to Kilkenny, Wexford and Waterford. Since Cork’s 2008 All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship Quarter-Final victory over Clare in Thurles, Cork’s Senior Hurling Championship record in matches played outside of Pairc Ui Chaoimh is Played 9, Won 2, Drew 1, Lost 6. The two victories came against Antrim (2010) and Offaly (2009).

Cork and Tipperary have met on 81 occasions in the Championship. Cork have won 37, Tipperary 36 and there have been 7 draws. 1 match was abandoned.

In the history of Tipperary and Cork matches in the Munster Senior Hurling Championship, on only 1 occasion did a game fail to produce a goal. That game in the 1900 Munster First Round game played at Dungarvan on November 4th 1901 and resulted in a 0-12 to 0-9 victory for Tipperary.

Limerick have won 1 of the last 16 Munster Senior Hurling Championship matches they have played, an extra-time victory over Tipperary in the 2007 Munster Semi-Final 2nd replay at the Gaelic Grounds. During that period, Limerick have drawn 5 times. Limerick’s last Championship victory away from the Pairc na nGael came in 2001 with victories over Cork and Waterford at Pairc Ui Chaoimh.

Tipperary’s Eoin Kelly was the top scorer in the 2010 Provincial and All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championships, scoring 3-43. Cork’s Ben O’Connor was 3rd with 2-31 while Eoin Kelly of Waterford was 5th with a tally of 1-27.

Limerick and Tipperary have both lost 26 Munster Senior Hurling Finals. Cork have lost 29.

He won 10 Tipperary county senior hurling championships with his club, Toomevara, including 2 as captain and 3 Munster club championship medals. He also won 3 National Hurling League medals, 2 as captain, 2 Munster senior hurling championship medals, a Munster minor championship medal and 3 All Star awards.

Michael Gleeson played senior hurling for Tipperary against Clare in the 1977 Munster senior hurling championship. He also played in the 1975/76 and 76/77 National Hurling Leagues. He played senior hurling with Thurles Sarsfields for 10 years between 1974 and 1983, winning a county championship medal in 1974 and 3 Mid Division senior hurling medals. He began his career in team management with the Durlas Óg club in Thurles and has made a major contribution to the recent revival in the fortunes of Thurles Sarsfields at underage and adult level.

Trainer

Dr. Cian O’Neill from the Moorefield Club in Kildare and a lecturer and course director in Sports Science in University of Limerick (UL) is in his fourth year as the team trainer. He has extensive experience training and coaching club, colleges and inter-county teams including the Limerick senior footballers and Kildare minor footballers.

Snippets

History and all of that – 2002 v 2011

In 2002 Tipperary were defending All Ireland Champions, but didn’t reach the NHL Final. In 2011 they missed out on the Allianz League final.

In 2002 Tipperary were managed by an All Ireland winning forward (Nicky English) from the West Division, who was on the 1989 and 1991 winning teams. In 2011 Declan Ryan fits the same description.

In 2002 the Tipp Manager had a contemporary playing colleague with him from North Tipperary (Ken Hogan), along with a slightly older selector from Mid Tipp (Jack Bergin), who had also played championship hurling for Tipperary. In 2011 Tommy Dunne and Michael Gleeson fit the same criteria respectively.

In 2002 Tipperary played two games to reach the Munster Final. In 2011 they have done the same.

In 2002 Clare played well against Tipp, but Eoin Kelly’s first half goal turned the game around. Eoin was also top scorer for Tipp in their first championship game. In 2011 the same happened.

In 2002 Brendan Cummins was in the Tipp goal and made a vital first half save against Clare. In 2011 he did it again.

In 2002 Waterford had a Manager who was a native on another county. In 2011, the same holds true.

In 2002 Waterford won their Munster Semi Final, at Semple Stadium, by one point, on a wet day. In 2011 they did the same.

In 2002 The Munster Final was played in Cork. In 2011 it is also in Cork.

In 2002 A Leinster referee was appointed to take charge. In 2011 a Leinster referee has been appointed to take charge.

In 2002 Waterford won the game with a late scoring burst. In 2011 ?????

The Cummins File

If Brendan Cummins plays against Waterford in the Munster Final, he will equal Christy Ring’s record number of championship appearances of 65 which were achieved between 1940 and 1962.

Born on May 11th 1975, Brendan made his championship debut on May 21st 1995 against Waterford at Pairc Ui Chaoimh where Tipperary won by 4-23 to 1-11 in a Munster first round game.

Brendan played 20 senior championship hurling games between 1995 and 2001 with both Declan Ryan and Tommy Dunne. There were 12 wins, 3 draws and  5 defeats. (Lost to Limerick 1995, Clare x 2, 1997, Waterford 1998 and Clare 1999).

Senior Championship Statistics – Played 64, Won 38, Drew 5 and Lost 21.

He equalled John Doyle’s championship appearances record for Tipperary, which stood since 1967, when lining out against Waterford in the Munster Final at Semple Stadium, on July 7th 2009. Brendan set a new Tipperary record against Limerick in the All Ireland semi-final victory over Limerick, at Croke Park, on August 16th 2009.

Brendan scored his first championship point, from a free, in last year’s All Ireland Final, against Kilkenny. He also pointed a free against Kilkenny in the 2009 NHL Final at Semple Stadium.

He was the Tipp goalkeeper for 48 consecutive championship games from 1995 until the first drawn game v Limerick in 2007. Brendan was overlooked for the first and second replays along with the subsequent Qualifier games v. Offaly, Dublin, Cork and the quarter final v. Wexford. The Ballybacon-Grange club man regained his place in 2008 for the Munster semi final v. Cork and played in every championship game since then.

He has made 12 championship appearances against both Limerick and Clare and 11 against Waterford. He has kept 17 clean sheets n his 64 appearances to date and has won 38 times, drawn 5 times and lost 21 times.

Tipperary’s hurling number 1 also played outfield, in 16 Senior Football championship games for his county between 1994 and 2002. This included the Munster Finals of 1994.1998 and 2002.

Brendan’s performance in the 2003 All Ireland semi final against Kilkenny is considered by many people to have been the best in his championship career, even though Tipp lost. It was impressive enough for the All Star selectors too!  Brendan won his fifth All Star Award in 2010.

The only counties which participated in this year’s MacCarthy Cup, which Brendan has not played Championship hurling against, are Dublin, Carlow and Westmeath respectively.

Surprise Results

Waterford have a history of surprising Tipperary in major games, when the Premier County are favourites. Examples are the 1959 Munster Semi final in Cork, when Tipp were defending Munster and All Ireland Champions ( 9-3 to 3-4), the 1963 Munster final at Limerick when Tipp, who had trounced Waterford in the previous two finals, at the Gaelic Grounds, lost both Munster and All Ireland titles (0-11 to 0-8), the NHL’’ Home’’ Final same year  ( 2-15  to 4-7 ),  the 1983 Munster semi final in Cork, when Tipp were on the way back having beaten Clare in the first round, but were surprised ( 4-13 to 2-15), 1998 semi final at Cork ,when Tipp had been Munster and All Ireland runners up to Clare the previous year (0-21 to 2-12), the 2002 Munster final in Cork when Tipp, the reigning All Ireland champions, were again relieved of their Munster title, as Waterford won their first in thirty nine years, with an unstoppable late surge of scoring (2-23 to 3-12), the 2006 All Ireland quarter final at Croke Park, when Waterford overturned an eight point loss in Munster (1-22 to 3-13) and of course the 2008 All Ireland Semi Final, when the White and Blue inflicted the only defeat of the year on Tipp  (1-20 to 1-18).

Same top score

Interestingly, Tipp’s top scorers in their two most recent Munster final meetings with Waterford both notched 2-2 – Benny Dunne in 2002 and Eoin Kelly in 2009.

Not on their Eoin

The presence of ’’ Eoin Kelly’’ on both teams, has been a feature of recent championship games, between the counties. Their respective scoring details are interesting:

Eoin Kelly (Tipp)                          Eoin Kelly (Waterford)

2002 Munster Final                                            1-4                                            0-3

2004 Munster   S/F                                            2-8                                            0-2

2006 All Ireland Q/F                                           1-8                                            0-0

2008 All Ireland S/F                                           0-8                                            1-10

2009 Munster Final                                            1-3                                            1-7

2010 All Ireland S/F                                           2-3                                            0-5

Tipp v Waterford in Cork

Tipperary and Waterford have met in the Championship at Cork (Cork Athletic Grounds or Pairc Ui Chaoimh) on 13 occasions – Tipperary have won 8 and Waterford 5.  Dating back to 1998, Waterford have won 3 of the last 5 matches with Tipperary that were played at Pairc Ui Chaoimh.

Second bite

2006 was unusual in Waterford /Tipp rivalry, because it was only the second time the counties had more than one meeting in the championship, the same year. (There was a Waterford win in a 1933 replay). Tipp won the Munster Semi final meeting in Cork in June, by 3-14 to 1-12 on a day that Waterford had several injury problems and Lar Corbett scored his first championship goal against them. Waterford came back to get their revenge in a Croke Park Quarter final, hitting an impressive 1-22 to win by 3 points. Their season ended in agonising circumstances when Cork beat them by 1-16 to 1-15 in the semi final.

Goal less

In the history of this championship rivalry, there have only been two games which failed to produce a goal. The 1963 Munster final and the first round meeting in 2000 were the only occasions that there was no green flag. There has been an average of just over 5 goals per game over the 38 championship matches. There were 4 in the last championship encounter in 2010.

Dual skills in McGrath Clan

Noel McGrath will be hoping to make it 2 good weekends on the trot for the McGrath Clan next Sunday following the victory of the Tipperary minor footballers in the Munster final. Noel’s first cousin and clubmate, Liam McGrath, captained the Tipp lads to their first Munster championship since 1995. Noel is of course a fine footballer as well and has represented Tipperary at football at underage level.

Good call

Offaly’s Brian Gavin was an obvious choice to referee this year’s Munster Final. Over the past six seasons the Clara man’s profile has risen steadily and he has refereed All Ireland Quarter Finals and Semi Finals to general satisfaction and praise. Last year, Brian was stand-by referee/linesman for the enthralling All Ireland Final, between Tipperary and Kilkenny.

Brian refereed this year’s opening Munster championship game between Tipperary and Cork on May 29th .He also took charge of Tipperary’s All Ireland Semi Final win over Limerick at Croke Park in 2009, as well as the absorbing second game (which included extra time) of the 2007 trilogy between the same counties at Semple Stadium.

Both sides

When Waterford beat Tipperary in the 2002 Munster final, they were captained by Fergal Hartley from Ballygunner, who lined out at centre back. In a strange twist, two former Tipperary players, Brian Flannery (Kildangan) at right corner back and Andy Moloney (Cahir) a forward replacement for Seamus Prendergast, contributed handsomely to the win.  Just retired Wexford Manager, Colm Bonnar, whose last game for Tipperary was in the 1998 Munster semi final loss to Waterford, was a selector.
