All-Ireland IFC Club Final: More glory for Ardfert
ALL-IRELAND IFC CLUB FINAL: ARDFERT (Kerry) 1-14 ST CROAN’S (Roscommon) 0-9
The romance of the cup was alive and well for Ardfert on St Valentine’s Day as they won their third All-Ireland title at Croke Park.
The Kerry club claimed the Intermediate club crown, beating St Croan’s of Roscommon. They captured the same trophy in 2007, 12 months after they took the All-Ireland junior title back to the Kingdom. They used all of their experience to dominate the Roscommon and Connacht champions and they rarely looked in any sort of trouble.
Their captain Jerry Wallace, who started on the bench but came in as a substitute after just 18 minutes, was sent off on a straight red card near the end, though by then the result was long since decided. Croan’s were on the scoreboard within ten seconds of the throw-in at the start of this match, Kevin Smyth finishing off a lightning move with a white flag. Ardfert took control after this though and by the break they were comfortably six points ahead, 1-6 to 0-3.
David Griffin got the goal after 20 minutes and he followed up shortly after with a point when he fisted a dropping ball over the bar that could have as easily snuck under. Croan’s relied on the boot of Smyth for scores and he got all of their three points before the break, two from dead balls.
Ardfert opened their lead up to nine early in the second half to end any doubt. Their main attacking weapons were Damien Wallace, who hit three from play in his six point haul, and man of the match Griffin, who finished with 1-3 from play.
Credit to Croan’s, they didn’t lie down and they pushed hard for the goals they needed to get back into this game. They weren’t able to find a way through however, with Ardfert keeper Nicholas O’Sullivan quick off his line in one particular incident to snuff out the danger.
