Munster SFC: Rebels way too strong for Clare

MUNSTER SFC SEMI-FINAL: CORK 1-20 CLARE 1-8

By Denis Hurley at Páirc Ui Rinn for GAA.ie

Seven unanswered points in the periods immediately before and after half-time paved the way for Cork to see off Clare in the Munster SFC semi-final at Páirc Uí Rinn on Sunday.

While Cathal O’Connor’s point for Clare brought them back to within four points, 0-8 to 0-4, with seven minutes left to the interval, by the time Gary Brennan got their fifth, Cork had increased their tally to 15. The Rebels never really looked like being caught by a Banner surprise, even allowing for the fact that Gary Brennan had a goal chance for Clare inside the first minute and the visitors led by 0-2 to 0-1 after Pat Burke’s point on seven.

Cork reeled off five unanswered points, with Brian Hurley, Colm O’Neill, Donncha O’Connor (two) and Brian O’Driscoll all among the scores, with O’Neill unlucky with a goal attempt which flashed just wide in the 18th minute. Conor Dorman might also have had a Cork goal, Joe Hayes saving well from him, but two O’Neill frees before half-time helped to push them six points clear, 0-10 to 0-4, at half-time. Immediately upon the resumption, Keelan Sexton shot wide with a Clare goal attempt but again Cork pushed on, with Paul Kerrigan and Mark Collins getting on the scoresheet, and soon they led by 11 points, 0-16 to 0-5.

Cathal O’Connor did briefly give Clare hope as he netted in the 53rd minute, but Fintan Goold and O’Neill responded for Cork and then Donncha O’Connor converted a penalty, after Kevin Hartnett was adjudged to have committed a foot-block on Collins’ shot. That sounded the death-knell for any lingering Clare hopes and there were 12 points in it at the end.
