Cork 1-21 Waterford 3-9

Report from the Score.ie Web site

CORK MAINTAINED THEIR impressive record at intermediate hurling level with a six-point win over Waterford in today’s Munster quarter-final tie in Semple Stadium. The Rebels dominated the second-half with centre-forward Peter O’Brien outstanding as he chalked up 0-13 from play and placed balls throughout the course of the game.

Cork had been in front narrowly at the break by 1-9 to 2-4 after recovering from conceding two early goals to Waterford, who had Dungarvan duo Gavin Crotty and Ryan Donnelly on the mark. Cork also found the net in the early stages through Jamie Wall and the teams were level at 2-3 to 1-6 by the 20th minute mark before Cork pulled ahead by the half-time.

Waterford received a huge boost after the break when Donnelly got in for his second goal of the game with a superb finish past Cork goalkeeper Richie Cunningham. With captain Killian Fitzgerald extremely accurate from placed balls and Thomas Ryan floating over a sublime point from the wing, Waterford edged into a 3-8 to 1-11 lead by the 40th minute.

But Waterford’s challenge then collapsed as Cork took control and reeled off ten points without reply. O’Brien was the scorer in chief while Michael O’Sullivan, Ronan Crowley and Colm Spillane all chipped in with points during this time as well. It meant that Cork were 1-21 to 3-8 clear approaching full-time and a late score by Fitzgerald for Waterford rounded off proceedings. Cork now advance to a semi-final meeting with Clare on June 15th.

Scorers for Cork: Peter O’Brien 0-13 (0-8f), Jamie Wall 1-1, Colm Casey 0-2, Cormac Murphy, John Cronin, Michael O’Sullivan, Ronan Crowley, Colm Spillane 0-1 each.

Scorers for Waterford: Killian Fitzgerald 0-7 (0-5f), Ryan Donnelly 2-0, Gavin Crotty 1-0, Tommy Ryan 0-1.

O’Brien switch to full-forward proves critical for the Rebels

Cork 1-21 Waterford 3-9

MUNSTER IHC QUARTER-FINAL

Report from the Irish Independent newspaper

Cork produced a devastating final-quarter surge against Waterford to ease to a six-point win in the first round at Semple Stadium. Tommy Ryan’s stunning point from the right wing made it 3-8 to 1-11 in favour of Waterford after 42 minutes, but Cork then asserted themselves and, with Peter O’Brian in incredible scoring form, they overwhelmed their neighbours in a one-sided conclusion to an otherwise closely contested fixture.

A mistake from Waterford goalkeeper Seanie Barry allowed Mark Kenefick to feed Jamie Wall for the game’s first goal after eight minutes, but Ryan Donnelly replied in kind for the Deise men in the very next play. Three minutes later Waterford led for the first time when Donnelly played in Gavin Crotty and the centre-forward raised another green flag.

After the break, a lapse in defensive concentration allowed Donnelly to sneak in behind the full-back line, collect a handpass from captain Killian Fitzgerald and blast the sliothar to the net to restore Waterford’s lead and subsequent points from Fitzgerald and Ryan suggested that momentum might push them over the line. However, Cork gradually came back into the tie and the move of O’Brian to full-forward was critical, with four of his last five scores coming from open play as Waterford chased the game. Subs Colm Spillane and Ronan Crowley weighed in with excellent points to push the Rebels clear and set up a meeting with Clare in three weeks’ time.
