Electric Ireland MHC S-F: Terrific Tipp blitz Galway
Tipperary 7-12 Galway 2-12
By Paul Keane at Croke Park for GAA.ie
Cian Darcy hit a hat-trick of goals while Rian Doody netted twice as goal hungry Tipperary soared through to the Electric Ireland All-Ireland minor hurling final.
Revenge was sweet for Tipp who responded to last year’s final defeat to Galway, when they leaked four goals, with a remarkable seven-goal blast to set up a September 4 final clash with Limerick.
That’ll be a repeat of the Munster final which Tipp won by 17 points so they will be hot favourites for a 20th title and a first since 2012. Mark Kehoe and Ger Browne were also on the goal trail for rampant Tipp, who impressively scored all but 0-3 of their hour’s takings from open play.
Holders Galway did claw back two goals in the final quarter of the game through Cianan Fahy and Ronan Murphy but simply left themselves too much to do. Tipp came into the contest high on confidence after hammering Limerick while Galway felt they hadn’t been at their best in the quarter-final win over Antrim.
Lyndon Fairbrother helped himself to 0-29 in Tipp’s four-game provincial campaign and chalked up his 30th of the championship with Tipp’s opener early on. Galway actually scored more points than Tipp in the first-half, six to Tipp’s four, though a glut of goals put the Premier County in the ascendancy at the interval.
Those goals in the fourth, 18th and 27th minutes put them in a strong position and left Liam Cahill’s men with a 3-4 to 0-6 lead. Darcy slammed in the first and then turned provider with a clever palm down of a long ball in for the onrushing Kehoe who finished well from the left of goals.
Doody grabbed Tipp’s third approaching the break, keeping his head in a packed goalmouth to tap in from close range and he added a point in injury-time. Tipp’s fourth and fifth goals arrived early in the second-half from Doody and Darcy to effectively kill the contest off.
Doody played the final pass for Browne to hit their sixth goal in the 41st minute and Darcy wrapped up the spree with a 48th minute major after Kehoe’s shot was only parried by the ‘keeper into his path. Galway refused to wilt and clawed back those two late goals while Jack Canning, nephew of senior star Joe, was also on the mark with a point.
