Kerry defeated Galway by 1-20 to 2-10 in the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Quarter-Final on Sunday August 3rd at Croke Park.

Kerry booked their place in the All-Ireland semi-finals with a solid and controlled victory over Galway at Croke Park on Sunday.

Two Galway goals either side of half-time asked questions of Éamonn Fitzmaurice’s side, but they came through with ease in the end, showing greater composure and consistency in front of the posts, and doing everything with a degree of class and control. James O’Donoghue hit 1-5 from play for Kerry, including a wonderful first half goal, while Johnny Buckley, Declan O’Sullivan and Paul Geaney also impressed up front for Kerry. Shane Walsh gave another classy display in attack for Galway, and the main questions Fitzmaurice will have after this game will relate to the two goals Kerry conceded. Kerry led 1-8 to 1-3 at half-time, with Thomas Flynn’s goal for Galway just shy of the break leaving the Tribesmen with some hope ahead of the second half.

Galway actually had plenty of possession in the first quarter, but remarkably it took them 20 minutes to register a score as Kerry showed far greater composure and attacking guile at the other end of the field. Kerry were dealt an early blow when Brian Sheehan was forced off after just five minutes through injury, but they led after scores from Donnchadh Walsh, Sheehan’s replacement David Moran, and Michael Geaney.

Then on 12 minutes, James O’Donoghue continued his electric summer with a superb individual goal. Despite the fact that he was being shadowed by Donal O’Neill early on, O’Donoghue made it look as though the Cortoon man was not there as he burned past him and headed towards goal. It was brilliantly elusive play when nothing much had looked on, and his finish past Thomas Healy was equally impressive, perfectly placed in the top left corner of the net.

Points from O’Donoghue, Declan O’Sullivan and Paul Geaney swelled the Kerry lead, but Galway finally got off the mark through Michael Lundy, and points from Gareth Bradshaw and the stylish Shane Walsh left them 1-7 to 0-3 behind with half-time approaching. Then, Flynn scored a wonderful goal. He used the full length of his considerably rangy legs to run more than half the length of the field with the ball, burning a hole through the Kerry defence and holding off the grasps of Aidan O’Mahony before slotting the ball under Brian Kelly.

That goal was a significant elixir for Galway, but Johnny Buckley’s well-struck free left Kerry five ahead at the break. Points from O’Donoghue, Walsh and Buckley took the Kerry lead out to seven early in the second half, but Galway came roaring back into the game with 1-2 in the space of two minutes. Gareth Bradshaw’s point shot could have gone under the bar, but Lundy’s shot moments later definitely did, the Corofin man rounding Brian Kelly and finishing to the net after a clever assist from the experienced Seán Armstrong.

A Shane Walsh point seconds later left Galway just two ahead, and their supporters briefly sensed a comeback; it never really materialised though, with two crucial points from Paul Geaney restoring a four-point Kerry lead and killing the Galway momentum. To their credit, Galway battled on but Kerry pulled away from them a bit in the final quarter. Barry John Keane kicked three points after coming on, while O’Donoghue kicked three late points, making up for a missed goal chance midway through the half. So Kerry advanced with relative ease in the end and they can now look forward to an All-Ireland semi-final for the second year in a row.
