Limerick come through London test

ALL-IRELAND SFC ROUND 1A QUALIFIER: LIMERICK 1-16 LONDON 1-13

Report from the GAA.ie web site

London – last year’s Connacht finalists – bowed out of the 2014 championship after a three point loss to Limerick in the Gaelic Grounds on Saturday afternoon. Ian Ryan was the star of the show for Limerick as he scored eight points, three from frees to lead his team to victory. Limerick got things going when Ian Ryan linked with captain, Seánie Buckley in the fourth minute, while Damien Dunleavy scored in the sixth minute for London, yet that would be their last point for 20 minutes.

Slowly but surely Limerick were getting on top up front and with their defence rock solid they attacked at will. A fine score from John Galvin began the rout in the 12th minute and with Danny Neville, Ger Collins, Brian Scanlon, Killian Phair and Ryan, with two more, all finding the target in a devastating 15 minute spell, the signs were ominous. Mark Gottsche’s introduction for Brian Collins in the 24th minute gave the Exiles more impetus going forward and he got their account up-and-running again with a point four minutes later.

Joe Feeney and goalkeeper, Adrian Faherty, from a free brought London to within four points with five minutes left in the half only for Limerick to go in with a 0-11 to 0-6 lead at the break as Phair, Ger Collins and Ryan all scored. London were emphatic in the opening exchanges of the second-half and by the 43rd minute they had taken a shock 1-10 to 0-11 lead thanks mainly due mainly to the sharp-shooting Dunleavy, and it was he that got their goal eight minutes after the break to surge into the lead.

Nonetheless, Limerick did not panic and substitute Gearóid Hegarty soloed through to finish forcefully into Faherty’s goal and give his side a two point lead with 12 minutes left. Lorcan Mulvey and Tony Gaughan pointed for the visitors to draw them level and it was set for a grandstand finish, but that was as good as it got as Brian Scanlon, from a free and two points from Ryan saw Limerick ease to victory.

Limerick were 0-11 to 0-6 up at half time. The home side had made all the early running but found it hard to break down a packed London rearguard. By the 12th minute it was only 0-2 to 0-1 to the home side, who were wearing blue.

Ian Ryan and John Galvin had those opening Limerick points. Then Limerick took over and by the 25th minute were 0-8 to 0-1 clear. Debutantes Killian Phair and Danny Neville were along this scoring streak as well as goalkeeper Brian Scanlon (free). But London then came to life with three points in a row. Indeed they were to out score Limerick 0-5 to 0-3 in the final eight minutes of the half.

The start of the second half was all London and they kicked 1-4 without reply to go 1-10 to 0-11 ahead for first time. An Ian Ryan free had Limerick off the mark in the 12th minute of the half. Inspired by goalscroer Damien Dunleavy, London kept pouring forward and held the lead until the 57th minute. That’s when Gearoid Hegarty had the all-important Limerick goal. But London had two points in replay to level up the contest with five to play.

But goalkeeper Brian Scanlon and Ian Ryan had Limerick frees to ease the tension. Then in injury time Ryan capped a fine individual performance with his fifth score from play.
