Forde points the way as Silvermines reach first final

By James Hayden for the Irish Examiner newspaper

Silvermines (Tipperary) 0-13 An Rinn (Waterford) 0-11

Silvermines edged out a resilient An Rinn side to secure a historic first Munster intermediate club hurling final appearance following an absorbing semi-final clash in Dolla yesterday. Although the Waterford champions led by three at the break, 0-7 to 0-4, Silvermines upped their game considerably in the second half to take command but were made fight all the way by the dogged Gaeltacht outfit. An Rinn, playing into the breeze, capitalised on a slow Silvermines start and led 0-4 to 0-2 after 15 minutes thanks to points from Tadhg Ó’Huallacháin and Donal Breathnach and two from wing-forward Bili Breathnach. An Rinn continued to dominate as the half drew to a close and, despite opening the lead out to four, a late Jason Forde free ensured the Tipp champions trailed by three at the break.

Silvermines emerged a transformed side and within five minutes were back on terms, thanks to points from the influential Orrie Quirke, Willie Keogh and another Jason Forde free. An Rinn battled to stay in contention but a raft of pointed frees from Forde ensured Silvermines maintained a slender one point advantage as five minutes of injury-time approached. Orrie Quirke edged the Tipp champions two clear before a late Brendan Timmons save from Donal Breathnach’s last-gasp 20 metre free ensured victory for Silvermines.

Odds and Ends

Waterford clubs have taken part in this competition on 7 previous occasions. Only Ballyduff Upper (2005 Waterford champions) have won a game in the Munster Club Intermediate Championship.

Despite the Tipperary Intermediate Hurling Champions going from 2005 to 2009 without winning a match in the Munster Club Intermediate Hurling Championship, Tipperary clubs have a 50% record in this competition dating back to its inception in 2003.

Since the competition began in 2003, Cork clubs have won 4 of the 9 Munster titles on offer. Clare are the only other county with a winning record in this competition, winning 2 Munster titles.

Cork have only lost their opening match in this competition on 3 occasions, in 2004, 2007 and 2011.

In the 3 seasons, 2006 to 2008 in this competition, the only 2 Counties who recorded victories were Cork and Clare. Limerick, Waterford, Kerry and Tipperary proceeded to lose 8 matches between them in this period.
