Rouine goal helps Clare under-20s to comfortable win over Limerick
Limerick 0-6 Clare 1-9
Report by Tom Clancy for the Irish Examiner newspaper
A dominant Clare outfit booked their place in the Munster U20 Football Championship Phase 2, thanks to a double scores win over Limerick in Ballyagran.
Effectively a knockout game for both sides, the visitors showed greater poise, quality and patience to get the better of a Treaty side now heading for an U20B decider with Waterford.
That is a disappointing return for Shane Kelly’s side, who contested the U17 final three years ago.
Both these sides had gotten a win over Waterford, though Limerick’s draw with Tipperary compared to Clare’s narrow loss, meant that they were in the driving seat before throw-in.
However, failing to get anywhere near their best and turning in their worst performance of the season allowed Clare to profit and run out most comfortable winners.
The number of turnovers from both sides will be of huge concern going forward, particularly for Clare, while neither side were able to judge the wind with several forgettable pot shots at goal.
There was little doubt from early on that Clare would dominate possession, however, it was the boys in green who snuck ahead. The impressive Emmet Rigter curling over a second minute point, after an extraordinary goalmouth scramble for at the other end.
Odhran Cunningham drew a save from Craig MacInnes, Luke Pyne hit the post with the follow-up before Padraic O’Dwyer had a third effort blocked by a defender. Limerick’s goal led a charmed life early on, with Clare wasteful with their early openings.
However, they would find five scores in the dozen or so minutes before the interval. Cunningham levelled the game, with Conor Fennell (two), Seán McMahon and Daire Culligan all getting familiar with the swirling wind.
Culligan’s effort off the back of a fine dummy to close the half.
Bobby Smith would end 30 minutes without a Limerick score two minutes after the restart, but they couldn’t build on this. Only once over the hour would Limerick get back-to-back scores, and Clare quickly replied to that with a goal.
After points from Ronan Quirke and Pádhraic Murphy cut the gap to just three, Clare struck two hammer blows.
Tom Curran curled over a beautiful effort, but the goal was the key score in ending this contest. Carrying the ball from his own half, Éanna Rouine did the spade work. He was then on the end of a pass from Cunningham, to finish from close range.
The game wound down to a conclusion, with Darragh Murray’s point for the home side a moment of rare quality. Clare were able to kick 13 wides to just five from Limerick, such was their dominance.
April 10th is the next outing for both sides, Limerick facing Waterford in the B final, while Kerry are the opposition for the Banner in round one of their next phase.
