Kerry outclass Clare to begin Munster campaign on right note
Munster U20 football championship Phase 2: Kerry 1-13 Clare 0-05
Report by Eoin Brennan for the Irish Examiner newspaper
There was no obvious ring rustiness from holders Kerry as they made an emphatic introduction to the Munster U20 football championship in Páirc Naomh Mhuire in Quilty.
With Clare having three competitive matches under their belts, the wet and wild West Clare conditions suggested a potential ambush for the hosts but in truth it was rather a bloodless affair.
With a gale at their backs, the Banner were far too cautious and instead would be sucker-punched by a rapid seventh minute counter-attack that saw Evan Boyle play in Charlie Keating to kick the only goal of the hour.
Allied to Cormac Dillon’s impressive opener, the visitors were four points clear with little fuss which meant that even when Clare did finally show some urgency, they were still playing catch-up for the remainder of the half.
With centre-back Darragh O’Connor orchestrating matters against the dominant conditions, Rob Stack, Tomás Kennedy, Cian Lynch, Eddie Healy and Cormac Dillon all worked tirelessly to maintain possession and patiently pick their potential scoring options.
A Darren Keane tenth minute free was matched by the lively Dillon at the other end but the Banner were much more aggressive in the second quarter as Keane, Conor Fennell, Tom Curran and Daire Culligan kicked unanswered points to finally regain parity by the break at 1-2 to 0-5.
With no advantage to cling to, it quickly emerged to be merely a damage limitation exercise for the home side for the new half as Kerry finally got to flex their attacking muscles.
The half-time introduction of Luke Crowley proved a major jolt as the defending champions set about putting clear daylight between the sides.
The half was only a minute old when Odhran Ferris played in Cian Lynch to weave his way in along the endline, only to see his shot scrambled off the line.
Luke Crowley opened the scoring in what would be a dominant half of eleven points without reply. Cormac Dillon kicked four of the next five, the first two from play while midfielders Eddie Healy and Rob Stack also got in on the scoring action as the Kingdom eased 1-9 to 0-5 clear by the turn of the final quarter.
To their credit, Clare’s overworked last line of Aaron Kelly, Sean McAllister and Conor Kearney did their utmost to resist while joint-captain Josh Moloney and Eanna Rouine tried to get the home side on the frontfoot.
However, it was goalkeeper Cian Corry that kept some respectability on the scoreboard as he blocked an effort from substitute Paddy Lane as the tie entered the final ten minutes.
Fellow replacement Paddy Lane just placed his shot too high with a subsequent attempt but Tomás Ó Sé’s side had much better luck over Cian Corry’s crossbar as chief protagonists Cormac Dillon, Eddie Healy and captain Rob Stack fleshed out the final margin to ease their side into the round-robin series.
The tests will get incrementally more difficult for the champions who travel to Supervalu Páirc Uí Chaoimh to take on chief rivals Cork next Wednesday while Clare need to also up the ante away fellow Phase 1 qualifiers Tipperary if they are to remain in the race for a Munster final.
