Good start half the work as battling Cork hold off Limerick

Munster MHC: Cork 1-16 Limerick 1-10

Report by Therese O’Callaghan for the Irish Examiner newspaper

A resolute Cork held out for victory in the Electric Ireland Munster MHC round 2 at SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh on Thursday. Crucially it secured their first set of points having lost to Tipperary the previous week.

A fast start, with the wind at their backs, set them on their way.

In front 0-11 to 0-6 at the break, they went seven up at the three-quarter mark, but Shane Dowling’s Limerick hit back with 1-2 – the goal by Jack Cosgrave from a penalty after Danny Sheehan was fouled in the 53rd minute.

Cork didn’t panic and they pulled clear again with Adam Lee finishing a spectacular three-man move that also involved Michael Tadhg Brosnan and substitute Peter Barrett a minute from time.

There was also a seven-point haul from Mark O’Brien, his accuracy from placed balls so valuable.

This was a first outing for Limerick and while they did cut the deficit to two points on the home stretch, John Meyler’s charges were the better balanced team.

Midfielder Cosgrave bagged 1-4 for them, but other than that they struggled for scores where the Cork defence was dominant.

The first attack yielded a point for Malachy McKenna, but it was wind-assisted Cork (captain Liam Kelleher won the toss) who settled with unanswered points from Brosnan and long-range efforts from wing-backs Kevin Beechinor and John Murphy.

A goal opportunity was thwarted by Limerick goalkeeper Cathal Dennehy after O’Brien picked out Brosnan, nonetheless the home side’s impressive run continued.

O’Brien, on the 40, was leading the charge as Cork reeled off four more points to the Shannonsiders one. Huge work-rate everywhere as white flags arrived from O’Brien and Lee.

A second goal chance came the Rebels’ way when a free from distance by O’Brien was taken off the line by corner-back Dennis Blackwell.

By the 20th minute, the hosts were ahead 0-8 to 0-3 with a third defender, Cian Denis O’Connor getting in on the scoring act.

Having found the going tough up until then, Limerick matched Cork score-for-score for the remaining 10 minutes – Cosgrave landed a trio of frees, while Cork’s O’Brien brought his tally to four and Leo Hennessy finished with two.

The question was, if an 0-11 to 0-6 interval advantage would be adequate. They also had seven different scorers to the visitor’s four.

Limerick spent a long time in the dressing-room at half-time, and upon their return after two missed frees, Cosgrave nailed one from a tight angle.

But Cork always had a spare man in defence, Conor Noonan capitalising, and they increased their advantage through Lee, O’Brien and Barrett.

In the ascendancy 0-15 to 0-8 with the fourth quarter to play.

Then the game swayed Limerick’s way after Cosgrave’s penalty seven minutes from time.

It was a two-point match before O’Brien helped himself to his seventh point.

The outcome was not safe though until Lee’s majestic first time pull to the net.
