Efficient Cork move through the gears in defeat of Tipperary
Munster U20FC Phase 2: Tipperary 0-7 Cork 0-14
Report by Stephen Barry for the Irish Examiner newspaper
Cork motored smoothly through the gears to open their Munster U20 round-robin campaign with a double-scores victory over Tipperary.
Captain Hugh O’Connor (0-5) and midfielder Rory O’Shaughnessy (0-3) kicked a perfect eight points from eight attempts, while O’Connor came close to adding a pair of goals in the first half.
They didn’t need any. Going in 0-8 to 0-3 ahead having played with the breeze, Tipp could never get nearer than four points. Cork coasted to the finish and will move on to next Wednesday’s encounter with Kerry sharper for this run-out.
“Overall, I thought we were well worthy of our victory,” said manager Ray O’Mahony.
“We could’ve been out of sight at half-time. We had three goal chances in the first half which we didn’t convert. Had they gone in, maybe it was game over but I thought the lads did really well.
“We engineered a few marks, transitioned the ball very well out of defence, and when we moved the ball fast, I thought we were good.
“Our point-taking was quite good. We’ve been working on our efficiency over the past number of weeks and the trajectory is going in the right direction.”
Tipp had the advantage of matches under their belt having topped the four-team phase 1 group.
O’Mahony’s troops were well-pitched for this encounter, though, opting to play with a tricky diagonal wind at their backs and using it to pump quick ball into a dangerous forward line.
From that supply, they claimed three attacking marks inside the opening 20 minutes and converted each one via Dara Sheedy (0-2) and O’Connor.
In a match switched from Semple Stadium to Fethard Town Park’s 4G pitch, O’Connor opened the scoring with a free and almost found the net in the fourth minute.
Colin Molloy led the counter-attack and Jack O’Neill squared when he could’ve shot but O’Connor’s palmed effort was saved by Robbie McGrath.
Cork had to swap their man-marking arrangement on Orrin Jones after Dan Twomey picked up an early yellow card. His third foul allowed Tipp’s main threat to open their account with a free but Twomey would excel in a spare-man role.
Midfielders Eoin Doocey and O’Shaughnessy traded classy left-footed points but Cork had the greater range of scorers. As well as Sheedy’s marks, Olan Corcoran and Bryan Hayes swung over skyscraping efforts.
Jones flashed a goal attempt wide which was called back for a tap-over free before Cork threatened again.
Ed Myers broke inside but Michael Freaney produced a vital turnover. O’Connor then battled through a foul only for his shot to rebound off the far upright and away to safety.
They still led by five at half-time and O’Connor resumed with an amazing acute point on the wrong side for a right-footer.
A Jones free, again won by himself, kept Tipp in touch and they produced a huge defensive stand in their next play. Cork stayed patient, however, and O’Shaughnessy broke the siege to score.
Joseph Lawrence had a big second half for the hosts and he was centrally involved in back-to-back scores. The first was a long-range beauty by Jones, using the wind to draw his shot in, and then a direct ball from Paddy O’Keeffe yielded a point from Shane Ryan.
The gap was back to four, 0-10 to 0-6, with 14 minutes to play. Cork had grown sloppy but tidied up those errors to reassert control.
O’Connor slotted a free before O’Shaughnessy led his side upfield to finish off a fine passing move.
O’Connor added another free after a superb sequence from corner-back Mark Óg O’Sullivan, breaking a high ball and surging forward to draw the foul.
Against a defence well marshalled by O’Sullivan and David Buckley, who was making his first championship appearance in a Cork jersey, Tipp offered little more in response.
They had their first wide of the second half in the 56th minute before a Jones free took his tally to five.
Cork capped a productive first outing with a stoppage-time point from substitute Aaron O’Sullivan.
