Allianz HL D1: Wexford and Clare share the spoils

WEXFORD 1-13 CLARE 0-16

Report By Ronan Fagan at Chadwicks Wexford Park for GAA.ie

Jack O’Connor hauled Wexford to a third straight draw in Division 1A of the Allianz Hurling League when his injury-time strike denied Clare a perfect three-match run following Sunday’s dour duel at Chadwicks Wexford Park.

The Banner were left frustrated after trailing by 1-6 to 0-5 at half-time having been backed of the strong wind.

And Wexford almost rocked them with a 43rd minute goal only for a masterful save by emerging Clare ‘keeper Cian Broderick – on his league debut – from Cathal Dunbar.

The lead changed hands several times in a tense conclusion before O’Connor salvaged a draw for a Wexford side that was left counting the cost of striking fifteen wides – five more than the opposition.

Clare still look destined for the semi-finals as they prepare to host Kilkenny on March 10th.

But Wexford’s trip to Waterford that same afternoon now almost certainly represents ‘must-win’ territory for Keith Rossiter’s men in their bid to make the top-tier of next year’s league, with a further game at home to Cork on the St. Patrick’s Weekend to follow.

A fine double from David Fitzgerald helped Clare capitalise upon first assistance of the strong wind to compile a 0-4 to 0-1 lead after eleven minutes, with Ian Galvin and Aidan McCarthy also chipping in.

But the visitors were also aggrieved over Fitzgerald having a kicked finish to the net disallowed in the opening minutes for apparent ‘travelling’.

Wexford were hit by a double injury blow, with Kevin Foley forced off after nine minutes, before they also lost the considerable influence of Lee Chin on 25 minutes.

But with Clare having difficulties converting chances, Wexford calmly kept themselves in the reckoning, with Conor Hearne and Seamus Casey paring the gap down to 0-8 to 0-5 after 33 minutes.

And they drew level for the first time a minute into added-time when Casey drilled home a penalty he earned after an indiscretion by Seán Rynne (1-5 to 0-8).

Wexford found further satisfaction in Cathal Dunbar mining possession before bisecting the uprights to transform matters by 1-6 to 0-8 with the purple and gold looking forward to the benefit of the wind in the second-half.

Corey Byrne-Dunbar and goalie Mark Fanning (free) had early second-half scores negated by David Fitzgerald and free-taker McCarthy before Wexford were denied a certain goal by that unbelievable save from Broderick.

Jack O’Connor’s raking cross-field delivery led to a magic hand-pass from Seamus Casey putting Cathal Dunbar in the clear only for Broderick to deny him.

Clare eventually pulled level again after 52 minutes as Fitzgerald ended a ten minute scoring impasse (0-11 to 1-8).

And they seemed to be getting a new lease of life when asserting by 0-14 to 1-9 after 58 minutes with a surge of scores from substitutes Shane Meehan, Peter Duggan (free) and Mark Rodgers (0-14 to 1-9).

The intrigue was unrelenting though as a trio of Seamus Casey points (two frees) swung matters back in favour of the hosts after 67 minutes (1-12 to 0-14) before a crowd of 4,386.

Clare regained a slight edge through Fitzgerald and Rogers (free), but Jack O’Connor then produced the outstanding ultimate leveller inside a minute of added-time, before Wexford squandered chances to forge their first victory of the league.
