Munster U20 HC: Tipperary hold off Limerick comeback

O’Neill’s Munster U20 hurling championship

Tipperary 1-15 Limerick 0-16

Report by Noel Dundon at FBD Semple Stadium for GAA.ie

Tipperary held out to claim the spoils in the O’Neills Munster U20 hurling championship this evening when they held off a rampant second half Limerick side despite having been very comfortable at the half way mark.

Limerick hit back at Tipp with great flair in that second half and could easily have overturned the home side, but they certainly rued their inaccuracy as they clocked up fifteen wides in the game.

There was a chill in the air in FBD Semple Stadium for this clash which was a must win game for the hosts. And, they knew that they were welcoming a Limerick side which already had three points on the board, as against a solitary point marked down for the Premier County.

Despite playing into the breeze, Tipperary had the better of the first quarter exchanges and were 0-5 to 0-1 to the good thanks to scores from Jack Leamy (3), Peter McGarry and Eddie Ryan, against a solitary Shane O’Brien score for Limerick. However, the Treaty County men had managed seven wides in that period and had their radar been better, a different complexion could have emerged.

The situation didn’t get any better in the second quarter for Limerick and by half time they had increased their wides tally to eleven while they had one more point to make up their rather paltry 0-2 total for thirty three minutes of hurling.

Tipperary, by contrast, were making all the running and a brilliant Sean Kenneally goal in the 28th minute after he caught a high ball, shook off the defender, and blasted to the net, gave them a big boost and helped them to a 1-9 to 0-2 interval lead, their other points coming from Leamy (2) and Eddie Ryan (2).

Limerick were dealt a blow before the break when full forward Adam English limped off and was replaced by Newcastle West man Con Hayes. They needed to up the ante big time in the second half if they were to have any designs on getting something from the game. They did.

The difference was that Limerick began to take their points and they rolled over four very quickly through Patrick O’Donovan (2), Con Hayes and Adam Fitzgerald. Darragh Stakelum had one for Tipp but O’Donovan was on-fire now for Limerick and as they hit six in succession, he managed four of those with Cian Scully and Ronan Lyons getting the others.

A grandstand finish, which hardly seemed likely at the break, ensued and every ball was fought for with great desire. Limerick had points through Ronan Lyons and Oisin O’Farrell but Tipp hit back with Sean Kenneally and Damien Corbett points as injury time kicked in.

Limerick found two more scores through O’Donovan and O’Farrell again to leave the minimum between them, but Jack Leamy came good with a pointed free meaning Limerick needed a goal to claim something from the game. They hadn’t threatened a goal all game long and they didn’t in those dying moments either as Tipp held out to keep their hopes of progression alive.

Scorers for Tipperary: Jack Leamy 0-7, Sean Kenneally 1-2, Eddie Ryan 0-3, Peter McGarry, Darragh Stakelum, Damien Corbett 0-1 each.
