Limerick’s Castletroy score dramatic Harty Cup quarter-final win
by Jerome O’Connell for the Limerick Leader newspaper
THERE were dramatic scenes in Cahir this Wednesday afternoon as Castletroy College booked a first ever semi-final spot in the Harty Cup with a thrilling 1-14 to 0-16 win over Youghal. The Limerick city secondary school scored 1-2 in injury time at the end of this quarter-final tie to turn the game on its head. The last gasp win books a January 31 semi-final against Thurles CBS. Throughout the encounter, Castletroy had played second fiddle to Youghal’s Pobalscoil Na Trionoide.
Indeed as the end of the 60-minutes approached Youghal were 0-16 to 0-11 ahead. Then came the unlikely late charge from Castletroy. The goal scoring hero was Barry Nash in the 60th minute. Substitute Mark O’Dwyer held his nerve to point a free to level and it was Andrew La Touche Cosgrave who snatched the late later winner, which came in the fourth minute of justified injury time.
This was Castletroy’s third quarter-final in the Harty Cup and at half time they trailed 0-7 to 0-5, albeit the Cork side had played with the wind. Declan Dalton was the difference between the sides in that half with all bar one of his side’s scores – two from superb lineballs. Aaron Kennedy had the only Castletroy score from play in the half’s 25th minute. His point could easily have found the net as he pulled first time when a long range Lorcan Lyons free dropped into the goalmouth.
It was an opening half in which Castletroy hit six wides and Youghal seven. The early minutes of the second half were exchanges of frees between Nash and Dalton. Ian Coates then had Castletroy briefly ahead until Youghal hit four on the trot. Two from Lorcan Lyons and another from Coates gave Castletroy a glimmer of hope but still they trailed 0-16 to 0-11 and the stopwatch was showing 27-minutes played.
They needed a goal and Coates was denied a chance by full back Bobby McCarthy. An O’Dwyer free reduced the lead. Then came the goal. Conor Nicholas delivered into the goalmouth but Barry Nash was marked by two. He found space and crashed to the net.
But it was three minutes later when another O’Dwyer free looked to have secured extra time. But in his fourth year of Harty Cup, La Touche Cosgrave hit his most crucial ball when securing the last gasp victory.
SCORERS: Castletroy: Barry Nash 1-4 (0-4frees), Andrew La Touche Cosgrave 0-3 (2frees), Ian Coates, Lorcan Lyons and Mark O’Dwyer (2frees) 0-2 each, Aaron Kennedy 0-1. Youghal: Declan Dalton 0-12 (10free, 2lineballs), Aindriu O’Seoige 0-2, Darragh O’Connell 0-1.

‘Touche’ of class steals unlikely win for Castletroy
Castletroy CC 1-14 Pobalscoil na Tríonóide
By Jackie Cahill for the Irish Independent newspaper
ANDREW La Touche-Cosgrave fired over a dramatic injury-time winner to seal Castletroy Community College’s passage to the semi-finals of the Dr Harty Cup yesterday. Castletroy trailed by five points three times during the second half but a late scoring blitz of 1-3 without reply snatched an unlikely victory for the Limerick-based side.
Having contested two previous quarter-finals before yesterday, Castletroy now have a semi-final clash with Thurles CBS to look forward to. But Pobalscoil Na Tríonóide will wonder how they did not manage to close this game out. It was a quite remarkable finish as Castletroy turned up the heat to claim a one-point win, having trailed by 0-11 to 0-16 in the closing minutes.
Entering stoppage time, Castletroy were four points behind but Barry Nash and La Touche-Cosgrave, both two-time Munster minor medallists with Limerick, were pivotal in the closing minutes. After Mark O’Dwyer had come off the bench to reduce the deficit, Nash struck a brilliant goal after collecting possession despite being outnumbered by two Pobalscoil defenders.
O’Dwyer was anxious to prove a point after being replaced in the starting line-up by Aaron Kennedy and the Monaleen forward held his nerve to convert another free, the equaliser, in the third minute of stoppage time. And with over four additional minutes played, La Touche-Cosgrave launched a stunning long-range effort that dropped over the crossbar to send Casltetroy through.
Pobalscoil were stunned and not even 12 points from Declan Dalton was good enough for the Youghal-based outfit. Dalton fired over ten frees and two sideline cuts but his influence on proceedings was limited somewhat by a hand injury sustained in the first half. And yet Pobalscoil were cruising at 0-13 to 0-8 clear following a run of four unanswered points in the second half.
Dalton and midfielder Aindriu Seoige were central to this good run but Lorcan Lyons and Ian Coates helped to inspire the Castletroy fightback. Coates was carried off injured three minutes before the end at a time when Castletroy looked down and out.

Match Preview
The clash of Castletroy CC and Pobalscoil Na Tríonóide is arguably the hardest of the Dr. Harty Cup Quarter-Finals to predict. Pobalscoil Na Tríonóide earned their place in the knockout stages with three narrow wins in Group 3. Two 2 point wins and one 1 point win in the final round against Charleville CBS showed their ability to knuckle down and secure victory in close games. The only blemish on their record was a 10 point defeat at the hands of group winners St. Francis College Rochestown.
Castletroy CC on the other hand managed to finish top of Group 2 which was the ultimate Group of Death. With four teams level on four points each heading in the final round, it was a case of winner takes all when Castletroy took on St. Colmans Fermoy. Despite being forced to defend for long periods, in particular in the second half, Castletroy secured a goal in both halves to ensure a hard-earned 2-9 to 0-13 victory. Earlier in the competition, Castletroy showed their mettle to record a 2-13 to 0-18 victory over Gaelcolaiste Mhuire AG. The only blemish on their record was a three point defeat to Limerick rivals SNTN Doon where they lost out in the final stages to a resurgent Doon side.
It’s certainly all to play for with the winners setting up a date with Thurles CBS.
