O’Shea goal caps off comfortable day for Banner

Clare 3-10 Waterford 1-9

Report from the Irish Independent newspaper

A controlled showing from Clare under new manager Colm Collins comfortably moved them past Waterford at Fraher Field. Led by top scorer David Tubridy, midfielder Gary Brennan and centre-forward Shane McGrath, the Banner lifted the intensity in the second half to a level that the hosts couldn’t match.

Clare settled into their stride and Martin O’Leary blasted 1-1 within eight minutes. The goal came courtesy of a high ball that was touched down by Shane Brennan for O’Leary to slam into the corner. It took the home side 12 minutes to launch their first forward movement which resulted in a point for Paul Whyte. Tubridy answered immediately.

Waterford then hit back-to-back scores in the space of 60 seconds, from Paul Whyte and Shane Briggs. Tubridy snatched a second, but an improving home side bagged two in succession through Tony Grey and Declan Allen. Shane McGrath and Shane Brennan sent Clare into a two-point half-time lead (1-5 to 0-6).

Waterford’s star man Whyte narrowed the gap to one with an early second-half free. On 48 minutes, substitute Podge Collins’ threaded pass fell favourably and Sean Collins passed to McGrath for a simple finish (2-6 to 0-7). And 14 minutes from time, a combination between Tubridy and Martin Murphy yielded a third green flag for substitute Michael O’Shea. Whyte snatched an injury-time goal for a home side that struggled to breach the Banner backs.
