Munster GAA Under 17 Football Semi Final

Kerry 3-11 Tipperary 1-6

Kerry qualified for the final of the Munster GAA Under 17 football competition following an eleven points victory over Tipperary before an attendance of 862 people at Tralee’s Austin Stack Park this evening. Kerry thus set up a Munster final meeting with Cork, who had a facile win over Limerick in the other semi final at Páirc Uí Rinn. That final will be played at a Kerry venue on May 16th.

While Kerry never looked in trouble throughout, Tipperary will bemoan the fact that they passed up a number of good goal scoring chances that, had they been taken, would have made for a stiffer challenge for the homeside.
Kerry got the best possible start when Sean Keane set up his namesake, Barry, for a goal in the fourth minute and a minute later the goal scorer turned provider when he put Michael Slattery through for a second major. It could have been worse for the visitors when Slattery was through on goal again soon after but Cian Quinn did well in the Tipperary goal to deny him. Shane Doyle pointed two frees in quick succession in the 12th and 13th minutes to open Tipp’s account and Kerry had five wides to their discredit before Donal O’Sullivan had their first point in the 17th minute. Deividas Uosis saved well from Ian Holloway and then Adam McGrath was wide with a good goal chance in the 20th minute as Tipperary grew into the game. Kerry finished the half with two good points from Dara Casey and Donal O’Sullivan to add to Barry Keane’s pointed free and at the break the homeside led by 2-4 to 0-2.

Mark Stokes pointed for the visitors quickly on the restart and Eanna McBride had another soon after but Kerry were now finding their range and had five good points in the first twelve minutes of the new half, all from different players, to take a 2-9 to 0-4 lead by the 42nd minute. Shane Doyle with his third pointed free, and Donal O’Sullivan, swapped points before Aidan McGrath breathed life into the Tipp challenge when he finished a good Tipp move to the net in the 5oth minute. John Ryan’s shot was taken off the goal line by Gearóid Lyne as Tipp piled on the pressure but they had to be content with a Rian Quigley point as Michael Devlin set up Michael Slattery for his second goal of the game in the 58th minute and sub, Sean Doherty had the last say when he pointed for the homeside in the final minute.
