Harty Cup quarter-final

Ardscoil Rís 1-15 Midleton CBS 2-12 (AET)

Midleton will feel aggrieved not to have sealed the deal in normal time having turned around a three-point interval deficit to lead by two with 12 minutes remaining. They also had the benefit of a strong wind in the second period.

The reigning champions, though, weren’t about to relinquish their crown without a fight and a free each from Brian Ryan and Paul O’Brien levelled matters at 1-7 to 0-10 with four minutes remaining.

A Liam Gosnell edged the Cork college back in front with one minute remaining, but parity had been restored as the clock entered the red as Ardscoil Rís sub Will Henn confidently split the posts.

Gosnell, this time standing on the sideline some 50 metres out, threw over another placed ball effort 40 seconds into time added on. This looked to be the winner. Not quite. Referee Fergal Horgan played four minutes of additional time and in the third minute of this four, Diarmuid Ryan struck a fantastic point off the hurl to force extra time.

James Daly and Liam Gonsell both raised green flags in the first period of extra and it was tit for tat all the way to the finish line. 11 times they were level, in total. Gosnell had a chance to win it at the death, but his free tailed right and wide.

Match Preview

The defending champions Árdscoil Rís Limerick will look to qualify for their tenth Harty Cup semi-final in a row when they take on CBS Midleton. The Limerick side have won four of their nine previous semi-final meetings but amazingly, have never lost a Harty Cup final in that time.

Árdscoil Rís have not been tested in their two games to date, putting up 6 goals and 33 points and conceding just 2-12. In the opening round against Hamilton High School, a tally of 2-2 from Limerick Minor of the past three seasons Brian Ryan helped Árdscoil Rís to a 15 point victory. In the Last 16 versus Charleville CBS, Darragh Carroll’s first half goal helped Árdscoil Rís to a 1-8 to 0-4 interval lead. Further goals by Brian Ryan and David Woulfe (2) in the second half ensured a comprehensive 18 point victory and signalled to all teams remaining in this year’s Harty Cup that Árdscoil Rís will be a force to be reckoned with again.

CBS Midleton, winners of the Dean Ryan Cup in the autumn of 2014 and 2015, have an experienced side but lost out to Cork rivals St. Colmans by four points in their Group E encounter. In an exciting game, St. Colmans led by six point early on only to see Midleton record 1-4 without reply to give them a one point interval lead. Midleton stretched their advantage out to five point heading in to the final quarter but Colmans took over completely to score 1-6 without reply in the closing 10 minutes to run out winners by four points with James Sheehan getting the all-important goal for Colmans.

CBS Midleton took on Scoil Na Trioniode Doon in a tricky Last 16 game. There was little between the sides in the opening half but Midleton’s greater threat in open play helped them in to a three point interval lead. When Ger Millerick recorded a Midleton goal at the start of the second half, the game looked over as a contest but to Doon’s credit, they came back to reduce the deficit to three points heading in to the last 10 minutes. Midleton then scored four unanswered points to wrap up the game before a late consolation goal for Doon left three points in it at the finish. Liam Gosnell has been top scorer for Midleton to date scoring 0-15, 10 from frees helped by Liam O’Shea who has 1-5 to his name, 1-3 from play.

Fergal Horgan is the man in the middle for this game with a 1:30pm throw-in at Bansha on Wednesday.
