Mitchelstown CBS 4-10 Presentation Milltown 1-4
Report by Paddy Ryan
Mitchelstown CBS bridged a 25 year gap when they won the Munster Senior C FC title on Saturday in Rathkeale against Presentation Milltown.
From the start the winners gained control. Their defence were awesome, their midfielders won the aerial tussles and up front the attack in regular supply took some very good scores. Five of the six forwards figured on the scoresheet and George Pendle who did not hit the target had an outstanding game setting up many scores. Milltown found it very hard to make any progress against a very well organised Mitchelstown side. The only attack the Kerry side had in the first quarter was in the 14th minute when Aaron McCarthy cut through but his effort was well saved by Cathal O’Sullivan.
CBS opened well against the cross wind. Mark Keane had the opening score after good play by Sean Walsh and Adrian English. The second score came in the 4th minute when a well taken sideline kick by George Pendle found Dylan Kent who soloed through and released Adrian English for a great point. Good play by Lorcan Finn to Adrian English saw an attempt at goal well saved by Cormac Leane. Mitchelstown forced a ’45 when George Pendle and Lorcan Finn had worked well for Cathal O’Mahony. The ’45 by Eoin O’Mahony was collected by Mark Keane who kicked a superb point. Adrian English followed with a fine point. In the 12th minute good work by George Pendle led to a brilliant point by Cathal O’Mahony.
It took Presentation till the 22nd minute to record their first score when Aaron McCarthy and Fionan Walsh combined well for Cain Bradley who kicked over. CBS continued to dominate, their full forward line who accounted for 2-7 were in great form. Mark Keane was denied a goal by a good save by Cormac Leane. In the 26th minute CBS had their first goal. It came when Cathal O’Mahony, Sean O’Sullivan and Adrian English all combined for Mark Keane who netted from close range 1-5 to 0-1. The Mitchelstown side followed two minutes later when team captain Colin English put Adrian English in for a well taken goal. In the 28th minute a quickly taken free by Sean Walsh to Dylan Kent was pointed by Cathal O’Mahony. In the dying moments Mark Keane and Sean Walsh worked well for Eoin O’Mahony who soloed through and made it 3-6 to 0-1 at the break,
For the second half Presentation moved Aaron McCarthy to midfield with Kerry minor player David Roche. It made little difference as Mitchelstown continued to do well. The 4th goal came in the 34th minute. A movement involving George Pendle, Sean O’Sullivan and Sean Walsh saw the latter release to O’Sullivan who cut through from the ’40 and made it 4-6 to 0-1.
There was no way back at this stage but Kerry teams are never beaten. They rallied a little with Gavin McKenna pointing a free. CBS half backs of Lorcan Finn, Eric O’Donoghue and Dylan Kent closed off any threat from the Milltown attack. Inside Cathal O’Sullivan did well in goal with Jack Coughlan at full back very sound. Eoin Gallahue and Killian Roche were very solid all through. Good play by George Pendle, Eoin O’Mahony and Colin English led to a long range point by Sean Walsh 4-7 to 0-2.
Both sides made a number of substitutions. CBS keeper Cathal O’Sullivan saved well from Aaron McCarthy with Sean Walsh gaining possession from the clearance and finding George Pendle who set up Adrian English who was fouled. Cathal O’Mahony pointed the free opening up an 18 point lead 4-8 to 0-2. Good work for Milltown by Aaron McCarthy led to a point by Craig Counihan. CBS replied immediately when Sean Walsh and Adrian English worked well for Colin English who kicked over. Aaron McCarthy replied with a free. In the 55th minute Presentation had a consolation goal when Craig Counihan and Padraigh O’Brien worked a good cross movement on the wing with David Roche being on hand on the edge of the square to direct the rebound into the net. The concluding score came in the 60th minute when substitutes Padraigh McGrath, James Conway and Padraigh O’Gorman were all involved in placing team captain Colin English for a fine point.
After the game Michael Nash Munster Post Primary Schools Board Development Officer presented the Sean O’Murchu Cup to the winning captain Colin English. The CBS side now go forward to the All Ireland semi final this Saturday against Dunshaughlin CC (Meath) at a venue to be decided.
