GAA Football All-Ireland Senior Championship Semi-Final Replay: Kerry 3-16 Mayo 3-13 (AET)

Report from GAA.ie

Where do you begin? For starters, Kerry are in the All-Ireland final on September 21 after beating Mayo in an other epic game, this time after extra-time at the Gaelic Grounds in Limerick. Kerry emerged three-point winners, and after 160-plus minutes of gripping action, the only thing that separated them from Mayo in the end was their fresher legs and a stronger bench in the second period of extra-time.

Kerry were 2-3 to 0-2 down after 25 minutes, a goal down at half-time but thanks to the brilliance of Kieran Donaghy and James O’Donoghue, who hit another stunning total of 2-6, Éamonn Fitzmaurice’s charges fought back and two O’Donoghue penalties had them ahead going into the closing stages of normal time.

However, Mayo fought back and a Donal Vaughan score in the 72nd minute forced extra-time. James Horan’s charges moved two clear in the first period of extra-time and had the chances to kill the game, but Kerry came back in the final 10-minute period and points from Kieran O’Leary, Paul Geaney and Jonathan Lyne helped them over the line.

Kerry led by 0-2 to 0-1 after 14 minutes after a tetchy start in which the Kingdom managed to hit four wides, with O’Donoghue’s effort the only score from play in the opening quarter. Things changed in the 19th minute when Aidan O’Shea skied a shot which fell kindly for Cillian O’Connor, who fielded well and was fouled by his marker Shane Enright. Referee Cormac Reilly pointed to the spot and for the second week in a row, O’Connor beat Brian Kelly from the spot, shooting low to the right hand side of the goal.

Remarkably, Mayo had a second goal within two minutes. Both Aidan O’Shea and O’Connor were heavily involved again, O’Shea winning a great ball in the middle and running at the Kerry defence, before offloading to a better-placed O’Connor, who clipped a shot over Kelly. By now, O’Connor had 2-3 and was causing havoc, so there was little surprise when Shane Enright was hauled off and replaced by Marc Ó Sé, whose omission from the start was a big surprise.

Paul Geaney pulled a score back for Kerry from a free, but by now – the 29th minute – Donaghy, in for Stephen O’Brien from the start, was causing problems for the Mayo defence. O’Donoghue escaped Keith Higgins’s tight marking for once, but Higgins recovered to block the shot and the ball fell kindly for Donaghy to fly-kick to the net.

Mayo hit back with two scores from the boot of Jason Doherty, finally relieving O’Connor of the scoring burden he had shouldered so gracefully, but Killian Young snaffled a point in a rare raid from the back, while Paul Geaney chipped over his third point of the game, leaving a goal in it at the break, Mayo 2-5 Kerry 1-5.

Kerry lost captain Fionn Fitzgerald to a black card in the 43rd minute, but they were level when O’Donoghue was fouled and he slotted the penalty past Robbie Hennelly. O’Donoghue then had Kerry ahead for the first time since the first quarter, and Ó Sé put them 2-8 to 2-6 clear with a wonderful point from play.

However, with Aidan O’Shea now back on the field of play now after a horror collision with team-mate O’Connor threatened to rob them of their most influential players, Mayo got a third goal against the run of play, Andy Moran tapping home after Kerry goalkeeper Brian Kelly had dropped a long punt into his area.

O’Donoghue twice leveled for Kerry, as his partnership with Donaghy continued to cause mayhem, and the Killarney Legion man looked to have delivered the decisive blow for Kerry in the 62nd minute, when he fired home a second penalty. This time he went to Kelly’s left, having been fouled himself by Ger Cafferkey.

Michael Conroy pulled one back for Mayo immediately, but they had to wait until the second minute of added time before they were level, Donal Vaughan fisting over to send the game to extra-time. Goalkeeper Hennelly had a late chance from a free to win it for Mayo, but his late free fell short.

O’Connor and Kevin McLoughlin had Mayo two clear in the first period of extra-time, but Kerry hit the last five points of the game to seal an incredible win. Deep into added time, Mayo had Cillian O’Connor sent off for a straight red card offence at a time when his side were desperately searching for an equalising goal.
