Waterford turned the NFL Division 4 form book upside down as they upset promotion hopefuls Leitrim at Fraher Field to chalk up their first win. Shane Ahearne’s first-half goal steered them in the right direction with Conor Phelan, Shane Briggs and Paul Whyte also heavily influential. Waterford led by 1-6 to 0-6 at half-time, with the sides level at three points apiece after 21 minutes. Three Emlyn Mulligan frees gave Leitrim a 0-6 to 0-4 advantage before Phelan hit two eye catching singles.

Waterford finished on the front foot in the first half, boosted by an Ahearne goal on 32 minutes, with the towering full-forward finishing crisply along the floor to the bottom corner. Niall Carew’s charges added two more points through Wayne Hutchinson and JJ Hutchinson.

Waterford, led by Phelan, reeled off four points in a row from JJ Hutchinson, Declan Allen, Ahearne and Whyte to extend their lead to 1-12 to 0-9. Leitrim’s shooting deserted them in the second half as they racked up 11 wides. The outstanding Ahearne then gathered a JJ Hutchinson ball to settle the Déise and ensure their opening success.
