Munster GAA Hurling Championship Semi-Final: Clare 0-15 Cork 0-23

Cork will play Limerick in the Munster Hurling Championship final after a brilliant second half display saw Jimmy Barry-Murphy’s side defeat Clare at the Gaelic Grounds on Sunday. The Rebels trailed 0-11 to 0-8 at half-time, having been against a strong wind in the first half, but they utterly dominated their opponents in the second half, pouncing on numerous individual Clare errors to rack up a final tally of 23 points. Pat Horgan finished with 0-8 for Cork, while it was a wonderful day for Cork championship debutant Seamus Harnedy. The St. Ida’s man, the first ever player from his club to play senior championship hurling for Cork, finished with 0-3 from play and gave an excellent individual display, typical of the verve and enthusiasm which served Cork so well on the day.

The key period for Cork was the third quarter, between the 36th and 54th minute, when they hit 0-8 without reply, and turned what had been a three point deficit into a five point lead. They never looked back after that fruitful spell, and Clare only hit four more points before the end of the game as Cork ran riot. Clare had started the game well though, and helped by the physical presence of Darach Honan up front, led 0-5 to 0-2 after 12 minutes, with the 6ft 6in Clonlara man hitting two early points.

Cork found their groove though, and over the next 15 minutes, brought themselves firmly back into the game. Luke O’Farrell and Harnedy points kept Cork in touch, while Horgan’s excellence from frees had Cork just two behind, at 0-8 to 0-6, after 24 minutes. Clare weren’t quite making the most of the strong breeze, but Paudge Collins was looking sharp for Davy Fitzgerald’s side up front, and Colm Galvin chipped in with a couple of scores, one a brilliant individual effort from the left to make it 0-10 to 0-6 close to half-time.

However, Cork hit two of the final three points of the first half, one a massive free from goalkeeper Anthony Nash, to go in to the dressing rooms just three points behind. Cork immediately showed their intent after the restart, and points from substitute Jamie Coughlan, Horgan and William Egan had them level, before Harnedy edged them in front at 0-12 to 0-11 with a beautifully struck effort from the right wing. Clare were struggling to find their way back into the game, and Cork continued to kick on, adding four more points without reply to totally turn the game around. Two Horgan frees and points from Coughlan and Cian McCarthy had Cork 0-16 to 0-11 in front after 53 minutes. A Paudge Collins point for Clare finally checked the Cork gallop, but it was a only a brief respite for the Banner Men, as another string of Cork points, including Harnedy’s third, made it 0-20 to 0-13 with just seven minutes to go.

Clare needed goals, but Cork finished out the game very strongly, and their win never looked in doubt as they finished with points from Horgan, Pa Cronin and Nash. They will play Limerick on July 14 in the Munster decider, the first time the two counties will have met in the provincial showpiece since 1992.

Clare will come in to Sunday’s game on the back of victory in the Munster Quarter-Final v Waterford. Since 2000, the record of the Munster Quarter-Final winner in the Semi-Final is Won 11 and Lost 2. The only exceptions were in 2007 (a depleted Cork team lost to Waterford by 5-15 to 3-18 after a Quarter-Final win over Clare) and in 2003 (Clare defeated Tipperary by nine points in the Quarter-Final before losing to the eventual Munster Champions Cork by 1-18 to 0-10 in the Semi-Final). Note that this stat does not include Quarter-Final victories over Kerry when they took part in the Munster Senior Hurling Championship up to 2004.

The last Munster Senior Hurling Championship meeting of Cork and Clare played in the Gaelic Grounds Limerick came in 1997 when Clare won by 1-19 to 0-18 in the Munster Semi-Final in a game refereed by Pat O’Connor (Limerick). All Munster Championship meetings between the counties since then have taken place in Semple Stadium Thurles.

The 4 games in the 2012 Munster Senior Hurling Championship produced an average of 40.5 scores per game. There were 43 scores per game in the 2011 Munster SHC as compared to 34 scores per match in the 2010 Munster SHC. It was a very busy rivalry in the last decade with the counties meeting five times in 2003-2008, all of which were won by Cork. The Rebels also won in the1999 Munster final, which leaves Clare seeking their first win over Cork since the 1998 Munster semi-final. Their last meeting was in 2008 when Cork won an All-Ireland quarter-final by two points. The counties have met on 46 occasions in the Championship with Cork leading 32-11 while there have been three draws. Clare last reached the Munster final in 2008 when they lost to Tipperary while Cork last reached the final in 2010 when they lost in a replay to Waterford.

This will be Cork’s first outing in the 2013 championship, whereas Clare have already beaten Waterford by 2-20 to 1-15. Waterford led by 1-9 to 0-8 at halftime and it was level at the three-quarter mark before Clare out-scored their rivals by 2-6 to 0-4 in the final quarter. Colin Ryan was Clare’s top scorer on 0-7 (0-6 frees, 0-1 ‘65’) while Tony Kelly hit 0-4.

This year’s clashes….

This will be fourth meeting between the counties this year with Clare having won the previous three. Remarkably, Clare scored only one goal in the three games, which featured extra-time in the relegation play-off, yet still won them all.

1. Clare 0-20 Cork 2-11 (Waterford Crystal Cup semi-final, Sixmilebridge, February 1)

Late points by Colin Ryan and Cathal O’Connell edged Clare to victory. They led by 0-10 to 0-7 at half-time.

2. Clare 1-22 Cork 1-16 (Allianz Hurling League, Páirc Uí Rinn, March 16)

Clare trailed by 0-12 to 0-7 at half-time but won the second half by 1-15 to 1-4 in a remarkable performance which overwhelmed Jimmy Barry-Murphy’s men. Colin Ryan scored 0-12 (0-9 frees) for Clare while Patrick Horgan on 0-9 (0-8 frees, 0-1 ’65’) was Cork’s main marksman.

3. Clare 0-31 Cork 2-23 (Allianz Hurling League – Div 1A Play-off – Limerick, April 14)

It took extra-time to separate them in a tense battle to decide who dropped into Division 1B. In the end, it was Cork who lost out in the high-scoring shoot-out. Colin Ryan on 0-10 (0-6 frees), Tony Kelly 0-6 and John Conlon 0-4 were top scorers for Clare while Patrick Horgan 0-11 (0-7 frees), Pa Cronin 1-3 and Luke O’Farrell 1-2 were Cork’s main marksmen.

Did You Know

That Cork’s last Munster final win was in 2006 and that since then they have reached only one final, which they lost in a replay with Waterford in 2010. That if Clare win, they will set up a first Munster final clash with Limerick since 1995, a year they went on to win the All-Ireland title.
