Munster Senior Football Semi-Final – Kerry 1-26 Limerick 3-9
KERRY MASTER CLASS TOO MUCH FOR OUTCLASSED LIMERICK
Munster Senior Football Championship – semi final
By Murt Murphy for kerrygaa.ie
Kerry 1-26 Limerick 3-9
Kerry routed an outclassed Limerick side in this one sided Munster Senior Football Championship semi final played at the Gaelic Grounds Limerick this evening. It was very much men against boys as Kerry won as they liked and they seemed content to take points when goals were on as Limerick gained some level of respectability with late goals in both halves Kerry dominated the opening half and only for their failure to avail of five goal scoring opportunities, they would have been out of sight by half time. Jim O’Donovan gave Limerick the early lead inside the opening minute, but that was as good as it got for the home side, as Kerry attacked in waves with some fabulous movement and accurate foot passing, from players like Bryan Sheehan, Declan and Darran O’Sullivan.
The key battles at both ends of the pitch were being won by Kerry, as Tom O’Sullivan kept Limerick danger man Ger Collins under wraps, while Kieran Donaghy completely outplayed Shane Gallagher in air and on the ground. Then when you toss in the genius of Colm Cooper, Limerick was on the ropes for the opening half hour. Once Kieran Donaghy levelled, it was all one way traffic with Cooper adding four points, Declan and Darran O’Sullivan two apiece while Bryan Sheehan added two points from placed balls and in between in the 12th minute , Kieran Donaghy sent Darran O’Sullivan racing through, and when he dropped the ball, he finished soccer style to the Limerick net. Then with Kerry threatening to run riot , Limerick rallied in the final seven minutes of the half, after three substitutions, scoring 1-3 without reply with Seanie Buckley beating Brendan Kealy at his near post for a 28th minute goal and then Ger Collins adding two points, the final point could well have been a goal, after Kealy was dispossessed as Kerry led 1-11 to 1-4.
The second half was nothing more than a training spin for Kerry as Cooper, Donaghy and Declan O’Sullivan continued to score points at will as they stretched 1-18 to 1-6 clear by the 52nd minute. Limerick never gave up and grabbed goals in the 53rd minute from Ger Collins and in the 67th minute from Seamus O’Carroll, but it was a no contest as Kerry did as they pleased with Paul Galvin playing a nice cameo role off the bench. Limerick clearly missed their injured duo of John Galvin and Stephen Lucey while Kerry’s concession of three goals will be Jack O’Connor’s only concern as Kerry prepare for a probable Munster Final meeting in Killarney with All-Ireland Champions Cork in four weeks time.

Munster SFC: Kerry outclass Limerick
From the Hogan Stand newspaper
Kerry had too much firepower for Limerick in this provincial semi-final at the Gaelic Grounds (1-26 to 3-9). The match was a lot more one-sided than the final scoreline suggests, with late Limerick goals in each half putting some respectability onto the scoreboard. Colm Cooper scored seven points for Jack O’Connor’s men (six from play), and Darran O’Sullivan struck 1-3, with the goal coming in the twelfth minute and setting the tone for a long evening for the hosts.
Kerry – who had twelve different scorers as well as an outstanding defensive display from Tom O’Sullivan – bossed the opening period, with Kieran Donaghy, Bryan Sheehan, Darran O’Sullivan, Declan O’Sullivan and Cooper pulling the strings. Jim O’Donovan had put the losers into an early lead but Donaghy levelled and Kerry points flowed from Cooper (four), the O’Sullivans (two each) and Sheehan (two).
The hosts made three substitutions before closing the half out with a run of 1-3, including two points from Ger Collins and a 28th-minute Seanie Buckley major. It was 1-11 to 1-4 at the break and the visitors reeled off seven of the next nine points to assume a 1-18 to 1-6 advantage by the end of the third quarter. Under-strength Limerick kept battling to the bitter end and they were rewarded with goals from Collins (53) and substitute Seamus O’Carroll (67) but this one went very much with form and Kerry are into another Munster final in four weeks’ time.

FOOTBALL – Odds and Ends
Allianz Football League Division 1 champions Cork proved that points win games, not goals. The Rebels scored just 6 goals in 8 matches in the League (compared to 18 goals for League runners-up Dublin). However, a contribution of 131 points (average of 16+ per game) proved sufficient to retain their League title.
Kerry conceded just 5 goals in Allianz Football League Division 1 action (Dublin 3, Armagh and Down 1 each).
There has been a 33% increase in the number of scores in each of the last 3 Munster Senior Football Championships – 2008 (21 scores per game), 2009 (24 scores per game), 2010 (28 scores per game).
Clare, Limerick, Tipperary and Waterford have played a combined 17 competitive away matches in 2011 and won 3. Clare, Tipperary and Waterford have away games in their first Munster Championship matches.
Kerry’s only competitive defeats of 2011 to date have come against Allianz Football League Division 1 finalists Cork and Dublin – losing by 1 point on both occasions.
Clare joined Dublin as the only counties in the Allianz Football League to score 10 goals more than they conceded during the League rounds. Clare scored 13 goals (5 each against London and Kilkenny) and conceded 3.
Since 2000, Limerick have won 2 home games in the Munster Senior Football Championship – against Waterford in 2004 (1-18 to 0-7) and against Clare in 2006 (2-5 to 0-8).
Cork’s Daniel Goulding was the 3rd top scorer in the 2010 Provincial and All-Ireland Senior Football Championships, scoring 1-43 to lie behind John Doyle (Kildare) and Bernard Brogan (Dublin) in the top scorer charts.
