Munster Senior Camogie Championship Final – Cashel (Tipperary) v St. Catherine’s (Cork)

October 31, 2009 @ 2:45 pm - 4:45 pm

Cashel (Tipperary) defeated St. Catherine’s (Cork) by 4-20 to 0-12 in the Munster Senior Camogie Championship Final on Saturday in Mallow.

Senior Club Munster Final

Cashel 4.20, St. Catherine’s (Cork) 0.12.

Cashel laid down a firm marker to the rest of the clubs still involved in the All Ireland series when they destroyed Cork champions St. Catherine’s last weekend. Not only did their win give them their 6th Munster title, but it also means that Tipperary clubs have won the title 5 years in a row; Cashel – `05, `06, `07,`09 while Drom claimed the title in `08. From the throw in Cashel launched their attack & when Alison Lonergan latched onto a clearance from mid field to score a goal for Cashel within the first minute it looked as if Cashel were not going to be stopped. Three more points from Cashel before St. Catherine’s pointed. However, Cashel were not leaving Mallow without the title & they piled on the pressure. Their 6 forwards all found the target from play, & notably a lot of scores were achieved from long range. St Catherine’s themselves tried hard to find the target but Cashel were too strong in defence, aided with a player of the match display from Philly Fogarty. At half time Cashel were 3.11 to 0.07 ahead, with goals from Alison Lonergan & Emily Hayden.

With this margin there was no doubt about the result, but Cashel emerged determined not to rest on their laurels. They continued to press on & the subs introduced in the second half were also determined to push for a starting place in the next game. Claire Grogan had what looked a legitimate goal disallowed in the second half. Eventually, Cashel had too much class & skill for their opponents & finished with an admirable tally of scores. This was a superb team display, but Philly Fogarty earned her player of match award, while up front Alison Lonergan was ruthless in front of goal. Cora Hennessey’s ability to find the target from 50yrds was also noteworthy.

Cashel now have a two week preparation period before they make the journey to Wexford to play Oulart the Ballagh in the All Ireland semi final on the weekend 14th November.
