Loreto Fermoy 3-4 St. Mary’s Mallow 1-9

The Post Primary Senior A final between Loreto Fermoy and St. Mary’s Mallow took place on Sunday the 20th of January in Castletownroche. St. Mary’s Mallow opened well with three points from All-Star nominee Doireann O’ Sullivan and one from Irene Herlihy. Máire O’ Callaghan who was a tower of strength for Mallow at centre back drove forward to add another point. Points from Abbie Scannell and Jenny Cahill kept Fermoy in the game. St. Mary’s had Niamh O’Sullivan sin binned and suffered another setback midway through the half when Jenny Cahill netted a goal for Fermoy. Doireann O’ Sullivan fought back with two points for St. Mary’s. A point from Jennifer Barry meant that only a point separated the two sides at the half, 0-7 to 1-3.

Fermoy stormed into the second half with a goal and a point from Jennifer Barry but suffered a set back when their excellent full back Clare Murphy was sin binned which allowed Mallow back into with a brace of points from Doireann O’ Sullivan. Joanne O’Keffee was colossal in defense for Fermoy and an excellently worked team goal from that side was finished by player of the match, Abbie Scannell which pushed them into a 4 point lead with 12 minutes to go. St. Mary’s cause was dealt a blow with the sin binning of Doireann O’ Sullivan. Valiant defending by Hannah O Sullivan and Miriam O Callaghan prevented Loreto from adding to the scoreboard. O’Sullivan arrived back on the field with just 2 minutes of playing timing left and drove her team forward and finished the move with the ball in the Fermoy net to leave just a point between the teams. However it was a case of too little too late and Fermoy emerged winners on a scoreline of 3-4 to 1-9 allowing inspirational captain Julie Buckley to lift the cup.
