O’Connor keeps Flannan’s at bay

Report from the Irish Indepedent newspaper

St Brendan’s 0-9 St Flannan’s, Ennis 0-5

St Flannan’s paid the price for squandering three gilt-edged goal opportunities as St Brendan’s clung tenaciously to a lead they established early on in Charleville. Among the missed chances was a penalty after 37 minutes, which brought a fingertip diving save from St Brendan’s goalkeeper Andrew O’Connor, and the resultant ’45’ came back off the woodwork.

St Brendan’s started better and led by 0-3 to nil after 20 minutes – it was 23 minutes before the Clare side registered their first point, when outstanding centre-back Aidan McGuane raced upfield and showed his forwards how to score. By half-time St Brendan’s led by 0-6 to 0-1. It was a different matter in the second half as St Flannan’s dominated, but they could not turn their pressure into scores, and the Killarney side held on with relative ease.

Scorers – St Brandan’s: M Burns 0-3, T Brosnan 0-2, K Teahan, R O’Riordan, J Kiely, C Keane (f) 0-1 each. St Flannans: M O’Leary 0-4 (2f), A McGuane 0-1.

Match Preview
With their hurlers surprisingly failing to progress beyond the group stages in the Harty Cup, the footballers of St Flannan’s will have had ample time to prepare for this quarter clash with competition aristocrats St Brendan’s. The Clare school impressed in their victory over Coláiste na Sceilge but came up short against Col. Chríost Rí. St Brendan’s have been nothing but impressive emerging top of a group that contained Tralee CBS and St. Fachtna’s Skibbereen. Indeed their performances to date have led many to believe that the trophy may once again reside in the Sem.

St. Brendan’s results to date:

St. Brendan’s Killarney 1-15 Tralee CBS 1-5

DLS Skibbereen 1-8 St. Brendan’s Killarney 3-7

St. Flannan’s results to date:

Col. Chríost Rí Cork 2-12 St. Flannan’s Ennis 2-6

St. Flannan’s Ennis 2-10 Col. na Sceilge 1-6
