Kerry got the first win of their Allianz Hurling League Division 2 campaign when they beat Down by 2-23 to 3-17 in a thrilling game at Fitzgerald Stadium, Killarney on Sunday. Playing with the strong wind at their backs, Kerry led by 2-16 to 1-5 at the break thanks to Aidan Boyle and John Egan, while Darragh O’Connell pitched in with 0-7 for John Meyler’s side. Down’s goal in the opening period came from Gareth Johnston, who converted a penalty.
As expected, given the worsening weather conditions, the second half was a very different game and Kerry struggled to match the form they had shown before the break. However, they repelled Down for the most part and it was not until the final five minutes that the Mourne men grabbed goals through Connor Mageean and Scott Nicholson. O’Connell added three more points to his tally in the second half to finish with ten points (0-7f) for the Kingdom.
