Waterford 3-21 Laois 0-12
Pauric Mahony shot a whopping 1-14 (1-5 from play) as Waterford soared to the top of Division 1B with a comfortable victory over Laois today. Derek McGrath handed Shane Bennett his first league start in place of the injured Jake Dillon. Stephen Maher acted in the role of sweeper for Laois and they had the better of the first quarter. Zane Keenan picked off a brace while Willie Hyland and Ross King added points from play.
The sides were level four times in the opening quarter. Pauric Mahony hit five points to send Waterford two points clear after 27 minutes. Despite losing Stephen Maher to injury, the visitors rebounded. Zane Keenan launched a massive free from his own 45 metre line to equalise at seven each after 32 minutes.
Waterford grabbed the last three points of the half, two from Mahony and one from Gleeson to give the hosts a three point advantage (0-11 to 0-8). Mahony accumulated for seven of that total. The centre forward continued his scoring spree on the resumption as he tacked on three swift points, two from play.
Laois were reduced to 14 after 49 minutes when Charles Dwyer was dismissed on a second yellow. Three minutes later, a pinpoint ball from Jake Dillon located Shane Bennett who blasted to the top corner of the cobwebs (1-15 to 0-9). On 59 minutes, Shane O’Sullivan and Michael Walsh combined before Mahony whipped to the net. Within seconds of his introduction, Thomas Connors fired home a deflected effort eight minutes from the end.
