ALLIANZ HURLING LEAGUE QUARTER-FINAL: LIMERICK 1-12 GALWAY 1-20
Report from the GAA.ie web site
Galway powered past Limerick to seal an Allianz Hurling League semi-final slot against Kilkenny in three weeks time. The gulf between Divisions IA and IB looked cavernous as Anthony Cunningham’s side out hurled and out muscled Limerick at the Gaelic Grounds.
A first-half penalty from Conor Cooney helped Galway on their way as they dampened a sprightly start from the home side who led by 0-5 to 0-2 after nine minutes. But once Galway plugged a few holes in their defence and denied James Ryan the room to run at them, they finished the half strongly as points from Cooney, the excellent Jonathan Glynn and David Burke gave them a 1-8 to 0-8 interval advantage.
It was more of the same after the break as Cooney, Niall Burke and Padraig Brehony all found the target as Galway opened out their lead to six points by the 40th minute.Graeme Mulcahy pegged them back somewhat with a fine point, but there was no stopping Galway, as Cooney, David Burke and Glynn all contributed handsomely.
Joe Canning made his return to the maroon shirt with 17 minutes remaining, but by the time of his introduction the result was beyond doubt.
Ryan rattled the net with an injury-time goal, but Limerick were outclassed and now face a long wait until they get their defence of the Munster championship underway against Tipperary on June 1.
