D1: Impressive Mayo punish lacklustre Kerry
ALLIANZ FOOTBALL LEAGUE DIVISION I: KERRY 0-10 MAYO 2-11
Report from GAA.ie
Mayo began the Allianz Football League with a fine win over Kerry in Killarney on Sunday, gaining a modicum of revenge for last season’s All-Ireland semi-final defeat to the Kingdom with a fully deserved seven-point win.
In what was Mayo’s first meaningful competitive test since new managers Pat Holmes and Noel Connelly replaced James Horan, the Connacht side got the better of the All-Ireland champions, who delivered a lethargic and disjointed performance.
Goals in either half from Alan Freeman and Kevin McLoughlin paved the way for Mayo’s win, and despite an early second half revival from Kerry, this result was never really in doubt once the first Mayo goal went in. Mayo led 1-7 to 0-4 at half-time, and they were good value for the lead as Kerry had struggled, particularly at midfield where Donal Vaughan had dominated his direct opponent Bryan Sheehan.
Kerry had led 0-3 to 0-1 early on, Barry John Keane, Kieran O’Leary and Paul Geaney pointing. Mayo’s first point had come from Evan Regan, but he was forced off soon after that following a heavy collision. He was replaced by Michael Conroy. Mayo slowly found their groove and Alan Freeman’s superb individual goal was the defining score of the first half – it put Mayo 1-2 to 0-3 ahead after 24 minutes – and it inspired Mayo, who added scores from Vaughan and Conroy (3) to lead by six at the interval.
Tommy Walsh made his long awaited return in the second half for Kerry, replacing Sheehan, and it coincided with an uptick in Kerry’s fortunes as points from Barry John Keane (2), Michael Geaney and David Moran had them back within a goal of the visitors. However, when McLoughlin finished well to the net at the end of a fine move on the brink of the final quarter, the game was effectively over as Mayo led by six points again.
The sides traded scores in the dying stages but Mayo were moving comfortably towards a valuable away victory. For their new managers, it was the ideal start while for Éamonn Fitzmaurice, it was a clear sign that Kerry have plenty of cobwebs to shake off.
