Kerry beat Dublin with strong second half
Kerry 0-15 Dublin 1-10
By Eoghan Cormican for the Irish Examiner newspaper
A dominant second-half performance, in which the home outfit outscored their opponents by 0-8 to 0-1 directly upon the change of ends, saw Eamonn Fitzmaurice enjoy his first victory as Kerry manager over Dublin this afternoon. Bryan Sheehan (two frees), Stephen O’Brien and David Moran splits the posts in quick succession as Kerry capitalised on a host of poor kick-outs from Dublin goalkeeper Sean Currie.
Bernard Brogan stopped the rot for Dublin with their first point of the second-half on 43 minutes. There was no let up from the Kingdom, though, who hit four more on the hop – Paul Geaney, Sheehan and Barry John Keane (0-2) the providers. The winners finished with 14-men as Kerry had used their full compliment of substitutes by the time Jack Sherwood was black-carded on 69 minutes.
Dublin too finished with 14 men, Michael Fitzsimons red-carded in a late brawl which broke out in front of the Kerry goal. Overall, referee Eddie Kinsella flashed one red, seven yellow and four black cards in a tempered affair. Dublin had opened in far brighter fashion, Ciaran Kilkenny unlucky not to find the net as early as two minutes – goalkeeper Brendan Kiely deflecting over the Castleknock forward’s effort.
Michael Geaney and Johnny Buckley had Kerry off the mark, but Jack McCaffrey and Kevin McManamon kept Dublin in front. McManamon was causing Fionn Fitzgerald all sorts of problems, with McCaffrey, Jonny Cooper and Tomás Brady effective in Dublin’s approach play. At the other end, Kieran Donaghy was struggling to impose himself. The first three deliveries into the towering full-forward were taken down by blue shirts and Kerry’s woes in front of goal were compounded by a flurry of deplorable wides from Geaney and Stephen O’Brien.
Brady, McCaffrey and Cooper extended Dublin’s advantage their lead could have been greater had Eoghan O’Gara, unmarked, not blasted wides from close range. Kerry had a goal chance of their own on 27 minutes, but Paul Geaney fumbled possession at the crucial moment. Dublin goalkeeper Currie was struggling from his kick-outs and when Sheehan (free) and Buckley splits the posts, the interval gap stood at the minimum, 0-7 to 0-6.
