Cork claimed their 16th GAA Football All-Ireland Junior Championship title following a 1-12 to 0-13 defeat of Kildare after extra-time in Thurles on Saturday afternoon. The Lilywhites led by 0-7 to 1-3 at the break, with Andrew O’Brien scoring Cork’s goal after 28 minutes. O’Brien’s goal came after Kildare had built up a 0-7 to 0-2 lead.

Kildare started the second half well and established a three-point lead five minutes after the restart, but Cork came back and levelled the game at 1-9 to 0-12 at the full-time whistle to force extra-time. The first additional 10-minute period produced just a single point apiece, before the Rebels kicked two vital scores in the second half of extra-time, Kevin Hallissey with the first and then Liam Shorten with the final score of the game, to claim the All-Ireland crown. Éire Óg clubman Hallissey was the star man for the champions, kicking 0-5, while Shorten also pitched in with an impressive tally of 0-4.
