This will be the 32nd championship clash between the counties, stretching back to 1901 when they met for the first time in the All-Ireland Semi-final which Cork won by 7-12 to 1-3. Cork lead 26-5 from the previous 31 clashes with Galway’s five wins coming in 1975-79-85-2002-2009. Their last meeting in 2009 was also in the All-Ireland qualifiers with Galway winning by 1-19 to 0-15 in Thurles in a game where Joe Canning scored 0-10, Damien Hayes 1-3 and Joe Gantley 1-0 for the winners. Ben O’Connor was Cork’s top scorer on 0-9. Cork won on a 1-20 to 1-17 scoreline when the counties clashed in this year’s Allianz Hurling League in Páirc Uí Chaoimh.
