Munster MHC: Limerick 0-21 Cork 2-25
Cork opened their Munster Minor Hurling Championship account with a 2-25 to 0-21 victory over Limerick at the TUS Gaelic Grounds.
A masterful display from the Rebel forwards saw Cork to a well-deserved 10-point winning margin.
Shane Waters opened the scoring for Limerick with a free but Cork hit back with four-in-a-row to take early control.
Cormac Deane (2), Michael T Brosnan and Craig O’Sullivan all hit the target to give Fergal McCormack’s young charges a significant start.
Paul Murphy arrested the slide for a Limerick side that struggled to contain an at times rampant Rebel rising.
Ryan Dineen and O’Sullivan raised further white flags to give Cork a 0-6 to 0-2 advantage with nine minutes on the clock.
Waters responded for Limerick but the impressive Cork forwards were in fine form with Dineen and Eoghan O’Shea increasing their dominance.
Two Waters frees kept Cork within Limerick sights as the game reached the 15 minute mark, however, Brosnan’s second from long range put Cork four clear.
There was a mini-revival from Limerick in the run up to half time thanks to strikes from Danny Sheehan, Murphy and Cathal Dennehy but Cork hit a deadly blow on the half hour.
Deane was to the fore once again in setting up Ruairc Donovan who flashed a beauty into the roof of the Limerick net. O’Shea then sent another point between the Limerick posts to give Cork a 1-13 to 0-10 half-time advantage.
Limerick made a positive start to the second after points from Dennehy and Waters but Cork soon cancelled those with an O’Sullivan free and a solo effort from corner back Darragh Heavin.
However, Limerick were determined to get back into the contest and had whittled Cork’s advantage to Donovan’s goal by the 41st minute.
Cork didn’t panic and strikes from O’Sullivan, Jack Counihan and Sean Coughlan soon restored a five-point margin in their favour.
Dennehy did manage to reduce that advantage temporarily with an excellent effort from play but any hopes of a Limerick comeback dwindled in the space of 60 seconds.
Killian Begley was denied by a great save by Tom C Walsh and Denis Fitzgerald was first to the rebound to clear off the line Cork went straight down the other end and Deane supplied a deadly finish to fire Cork to an impressive opening night win.
