Munster MHC: Limerick 0-18 Clare 2-20

Clare earned their second win of the Munster Minor Hurling Championship after seeing off Limerick by 2-20 to 0-18 at the TUS Gaelic Grounds.

Paul Rodgers was in scintillating form for a dominant Banner outfit, finishing with a total of 1-10, while Ian O’Brien chipped in with 1-4.

Limerick popped over the opening score with just 14 seconds on the clock courtesy of Cathal Dennehy but Clare were back on level terms moments later thanks to John Barry.

Dara Kennedy, from long range, and then Rodgers put Clare two in front with four minutes of the contest played.

Limerick responded to square the game up with Dennehy and Rory Hanly hitting the target but it was Clare that looked the sharper all over the field.

Rodgers restored their lead with a second free and added two more to put his side 0-7 to 0-3 clear after 17 minutes.

A superb Ian O’Brien effort then had Clare five to the good as Limerick were punished for overplaying the ball in defence.

Two Shane Waters efforts brought Limerick to within two in the run up to half-time, however, points from Kennedy, Rodgers, O’Brien and Barry saw Clare lead by 0-11 to 0-5 at the short whistle.

Limerick made a better fist of things in the early stages of the second half with Shane Waters (2) and Rian Horgan finding the target but Clare kept ticking over with Rodgers and O’Brien to the fore.

Donal O’Grady’s Limerick did manage to get the Clare lead to within four with 18 minutes to play but 1-1 from Rodgers in a two-minute spell put Clare back in the driving seat.

The goal was beautifully finished from close range after excellent work from O’Brien and Colm Daly.

Limerick responded with three Paul Murphy frees to cut the gap to five heading into the final 10 minutes.

However, it was Clare that finished the stronger with O’Brien landing a deserved goal that sealed an eight-point winning margin.
