Tipperary strike late to pip Limerick to Munster MFC Phase One final
Report by Tom Clancy courtesy of the Irish Examiner newspaper
Munster MFC: Limerick 2-14 (2-1-12) Waterford 1-10 (1-0-10)
When the final whistle sounded in Mick Neville Park on Monday evening, Limerick looked to have done enough for a place in the Munster Minor Football Phase One final. A second home victory on the trot, this time over Waterford seemed to have them trumping Tipperary.
However, a late Premier rally in Templetuohy, including a last gasp penalty meant that scoring difference, of just three points means that it will be Clare versus Tipperary in the Phase One final next Monday. The Clare collapse costing Limerick, who’d defeated Tipperary a fortnight prior.
Michael Lenihan’s Limerick will rue a missed penalty from star man Jamie Crowley, as well as the concession of a goal to the impressive Ronan O’Hora late on – which hindered their scoring difference which ended at plus four. Tipperary, three points better off, had beaten Waterford by ten, and that was one of the reasons they prevailed.
After a sluggish start Ben Kiely found the net to level the contest, after six minutes – clubmate Crowley with the assist. By the interval, it was 1-6 to 0-7 with Waterford keeping in the contest thanks to O’Hora’s excellence, while Oisín Hallahan and Tom Lynch kicked nice points.
A 39th minute penalty from Monaleen’s Crowley spun back off the upright, and wide, after sending Darragh Walsh the wrong way. The result never seemed in doubt but it was now a question of could they score enough to eliminate any doubt.
There was a second goal just five minutes later, to move Limerick seven clear. While they looked to sprint to the finish line when Ryan Sheehan curled over a two-pointer, they failed to hammer home their advantage.
Instead, a 59th minute goal from the towering O’Hora and another point from Lynch reduced the margin. In finished as a seven point win when Jake Higgins clipped over in stoppage time.
Then news filtered through some time later of Dylan McCormack’s penalty, seven minutes into additional time. Tipperary trailed 1-11 to 0-6 at half-time, thanks to Conor Burke’s classy finish to the net on 25 minutes.
Burkes fingerprints were all over the Clare dominance, but Darragh Bresnan, Cillian Smyth and Ned O’Meara cut the gap before a foot-block gave McCormack the chance from 12 meters.
Waterford, who put up a gallant effort, join Limerick in the All Ireland ‘C’ series in early May, while Clare and Tipperary will play that final before meeting with Cork and Kerry in the Munster semi-final.
