Munster Minor football championship: Limerick 2-14 (2-2-10) Tipperary 1-12 (1-0-12)
An accurate an dominant opening half propelled Limerick to a first Munster Minor victory in Phase One of the Munster Championship. Registering 2-8 before Tipperary worked the scorekeeper, Limerick showed great resolve after a disappointing loss to Clare last weekend.
For the Premier, they were wasteful against a strong breeze and left themselves with it all to do. They showed decent quality at times but never got closer than six points, despite a second half goal from captain Ned O’Meara.
The scores the winners kicked early on were in contrast to the belief that they were to play second fiddle to Tipperary. These sides will both require a win to have any chance of reaching the Phase One final. All the scores for Mike Lenihan’s men came from open play.
The Treaty’s Ben Kiely opened the scoring in the sixth minute with an effort from range – a sign of the wind which backed Mike Lenihan’s charges in the opening half.
Indeed, they’d move fourteen points clear by the time Tipperary registered their first score. Shane Gill and Ryan Sheehan added to that Kiely effort before the impressive Jamie Crowley got the fourth on ten minutes.
There was some openings for Tipperary in attack but they struggled with their shooting – missing three mid-range frees into the west Limerick breeze were compounded by a first goal from Oisin Healy.
Jake Higgins’ surging run opened the space for Healy, who was able to finish despite mis-handling the ball initially. Within three minutes they had a superb second green flag.
This time Healy delivered a kick-pass of the highest quality for Crowley who collected over the defenders head and finished from close range.
Clearly in the ascendency, the men in green added two scores from outside the arc, the first from Crowley which scarcely looked on the second from Sheehan who showed great awareness to carry the ball outside before pulling the trigger.
The Premier rolled the dice with an early sub, as Seán Cleary was introduced before half-time. It had the desired effect, as they rattled off a trio of scores.
Cleary was able to finish two of those moves after Ned O’Meara got them off the mark.
A second half that saw O’Meara find the net, was defined by fast scores for Limerick on the break, while there was a plethora of goal chances that evaded Tipp. Jack Noonan denying one with his legs, while quality defending saw another couple evaporate.
Limerick finish their Phase 1 campaign at home to Waterford on Monday April 28, while Tipperary entertain Clare at the same time.
