Kerry round off mixed Division 2 campaign with convincing win over Tyrone
Report by Francis Mooney for the Irish Independent newspaper
Kerry completed their Allianz Hurling League Division 2 campaign with a six-point win over already-relegated Tyrone at Garvaghey.
The margin would have been greater but for a terrific performance by Red Hand goalkeeper Conor McElhatton, who pulled off five brilliant saves.
It was a positive conclusion to a mixed league season for the Kingdom, as they take a break ahead of a tough Joe McDonagh Cup challenge, beginning next month with a trip to Kildare.
The sides were deadlocked at two points each when Kerry got in for a fourth minute goal, Niall Mulcahy providing the assist for Shane Nolan to rifle his shot past McElhatton.
Earlier, the same two players had split the posts, with Aidy Kelly and Seán Duffin on target for the Red Hands.
With the wind in their backs, the Kingdom continued to press, opening up a six-point gap with a couple of Pádraig Boyle scores.
But they were reduced to 14 men on 23 minutes when midfielder Paudie O’Connor picked up a second booking.
Nevertheless, they steered a steady course to the interval. Boyle bringing his tally to five, with Mark McCann hitting Tyrone’s only score of the second quarter.
Kerry led by 1-9 to 0-5 at the interval, and stretched the advantage to 11 points, as Boyle continued to hit the target, along with Luke Crowley.
But Tyrone rallied strongly in the final quarter, Duffin arrowing over three frees, before substitute Kiefer Morgan brought them to within five points with a 67th minute goal.
But their goalkeeper McElhatton kept them in the hunt with another couple of stunning saves, including a sensational stop from Crowley.
