Allianz NFL Division 4: Waterford 0-11 Wexford 2-17
The sounds of Florence & The Machine blasted out of the away dressing room on Saturday night after table toppers Wexford enjoyed their fourth straight win in Division 4.
Mark Rossiter and Seán Ryan netted in either half for John Hegarty’s men in a pillar to post victory. Rossiter finished with 1-3 from play and the ever dangerous Ben Brosnan chipped in with four points. Eleven players contributed to the scoreboard.
The Déise remain bottom of the table after their fifth defeat of the campaign. Captain Conor Murray knocked over four second-half points.
The league leaders meant business and fired four points inside the opening three minutes. Tom Byrne split the posts after just 10 seconds. Eoghan Nolan, Eoin Porter and Mark Rossiter followed suit. Jason Curry converted a two point free for the home side in the fifth minute after Wexford were penalised 50 metres. Déise netminder Aaron Beresford then dived full length to deny Seán Ryan a goal.
He couldn’t keep the Model men at bay for long. In the twelfth minute, Kevin O’Grady knifed through the Waterford defence and Rossiter rifled the ball to the roof of the net. A beauty from Ben Brosnan made it 1-10 to 0-2.
James Power ended a 19 minute wait for a Waterford score. Alan Dunwoody and Curry (free) left the hosts nine adrift at the break (1-11 to 0-5).
Waterford boss Paul Shankey made a double half time substitution and his team rallied in the third quarter. Power put over his second of the night before a quickfire double from Conor Murray brought them within six. Kevin O’Grady ended that purple patch with Wexford’s first score in 20 minutes. A Murray two pointer cut the gap to five (1-13 to 0-11).
That was as good as it got for Shankey’s men. With eight minutes left, Seán Ryan collected a high ball from Eoghan Nolan and smashed home.
