Allianz Football League Div 4: Limerick 4-24 (4-1-22) Waterford 1-17 (1-2-13)
Promotion for Limerick. The first steps on the road back.
James Naughton with a stunning 4-12 haul. 4-3 from play. He rounded out a superb team display with two late goals to swat aside the Waterford challenge and send them into next weeks final with Wexford.
Their only stumble to date was a loss to the Model County but they’ve recovered to claim four wins and a draw to add to an opening day tie in Longford. They have put up huge totals and were fully deserving winners despite a rocky start against their Munster rivals.
As well as Naughton there was scoring contributions from Emmet Rigter, Tony McCarthy and Darragh O’Hagan.
Rocked by an early Tholom Guiry goal, Limerick replied with Naughton neatly tucking home his first green flag within ninety seconds. With nothing but pride to play for, Waterford came to upset the Treaty, and gained some amount of belief when Dermot Ryan and James Power kicked a brace of two-pointers. Jason Curry put them five ahead with a free.
However, Limerick thundered back to form, with and steadily used the new rules to get back into the contest. Naughton tapped over a brace of frees, which were advanced after Waterford delayed the restart.
Then a first point from play for the St. Senan’s sensation, before O’Hagan showed his quality with a mid-range score.
The second goal came from a Darragh Ó Siochrú pass who spotted the back post run from Naughton who palmed to the net. This put Limerick ahead for the first time and from here they didn’t look back.
By half-time, it was 2-9 to 1-8 with Kerry native Ó Siochrú adding another point late in the half.
Waterford were wasteful in the third quarter. While Jason Curry did land a couple of beautiful efforts they could have moved closer. Tony McCarthy punished this with two of his own.
A sprint to the finish began with Naughton adding one from play and a free before Pater Nash, Ó Siochrú and Emmet Rigter pushing the Shannonsiders clear.
The late fluty of scores arrive with a first orange flag from a Naughton free. He was on the end of an Iain Corbett pass to complete his hat-trick in stoppage time before finishing off a move which involved the Ó Siochrú brothers right at the death.
A frantic yet at times controlled and mature display from Limerick who make the immediate return to Division Three, and change divisions for the fourth season in row.
