Allianz NFL Div 4: Limerick 2-21 (2-1-19) Tipperary 3-8 (3-1-6)
Limerick gave further energy to their promotion hopes when dispatching of a somewhat depleted Tipperary on home soil. In the process they made it three victories in a row after a famine without a league success.
As well as playing without captain Steven O’Brien, Tipp lost Sean O’Connor and Luke Boland to hamstring issues during the clash. They failed to ignite during the second half and only managed 1-2 as Limerick pulled well clear on a dry and wind-free evening in west Limerick.
Robbie Childs opened the scoring from the throw-in, neatly finishing off a team move. O’Connor was fouled by Killian Ryan for a penalty inside two minutes, after Josh Ryan had initially denied the Clonmel man with a decent save. O’Connor buried the penalty.
Iain Corbett replied wonderfully with a two-pointer to level the sides but the hosts soon gifted the Premier a second goal. Darragh O’Hagan won a free on his own 20m line. His teammate kicked this straight to Michael Freaney who lobbed the ball to a vacant net from distance.
Again Corbett replied, this time with a point, before his clubmate Emmet Rigter showed great composure to fine the net after great build-up involving Mark McCarthy and Cormac Woulfe.
A two-point free from Cian Smith was next for the visitors but Limerick looked dangerous and moved 1-6 to 2-2 ahead when Sean Clancy and Robbie Childs tacked on points. It could have been more but Jimmy Lee’s men were to be happy with a point.
Keeper Ryan caught an opposition mark and Darragh Ó Siochrú benefited as he finished off a swift counterattack. There was a level of dominance from the home side but both Cian Smith and Seán O’Connor kept them in touch.
After a frantic opening half, the Treaty led 1-13 to 2-6, closing the half with the final two points from Naughton and Kerry native Ó Siochrú. Crucially, O’Connor limped off for Tipperary with a hamstring complaint late in the half.
There was a Luke Boland point to energise Paul Cahill’s men early in the second half, but a trio of wides hampered their chances. Tommie Childs cancelled this out to restore the advantage for those in green.
A Josh Ryan handling error gave Freaney his second major but they only managed a solitary point from here to the finish. Instead Peter Nash buried a goal from near the next play and they restored a two-point advantage.
Mark Russell did find the net for what may have been a fourth goal for his side but he took his solo-and-go from the wrong place. He then missed the resultant free.
Jimmy Lee’s men coasted to the win with scores from Killian Ryan, Danny Neville, Naughton and sub-Tadhg Ó Siochrú.
