Division 3: Sligo 1-19 Clare 2-14
CLARE manager Peter Keane felt his side could have taken a point from Markievicz Park on Sunday in what proved a thriller that went the way of Sligo, who were relieved to chalk up their first win of the campaign.
During the chaotic seven minutes of additional time the Munster county had a goal disallowed (Ikem Ugwueru’s effort), scored 1-2 through their most dangerous attacker Emmet McMahon and also missed a late two-pointer from play – that would have levelled matters – when substitute Dermot Coughlan was off target with a booming effort.
The visitors, who had won three of their previous four games prior to their visit to Sligo, twice battled back from deficits of seven points in a cracking contest played out under the March sun.
“We were just unlucky – we could have scraped a draw at the very end,” said the former Kerry boss.
“We were very flat in the first-half and that probably set the tone for the game – but we fought very well in the last quarter, we really went after the game.”
Disappointed with some refereeing decisions that went against them, Keane remained upbeat with games to come against Laois and Offaly, counties who are also chasing promotion.
“We have to try to win against Laois,” he added.
Clare trailed by two points at the break, 0-9 to 0-7, having failed to build on a 0-5 to 0-3 advantage after 19 minutes. It didn’t help their cause that several potential goals were denied by brave Sligo blocks, with the home side led by the impressive Patrick O’Connor, who plays for Dublin’s Kilmacud Crokes.
When Sligo goaled through Canice Mulligan 13 minutes into the second-half, to put seven points between the teams, 1-12 to 0-8, that could have been it for Clare, who had to cope with being down to 14 players following Keelan Sexton’s black card after 52 minutes.
But Clare goaled almost immediately following that Canice Mulligan three-pointer through Aaron Griffin’s scrambled effort and fine points from Ikem Ugwueru kept the revival going – only for Sligo, for whom team captain Niall Murphy scored 0-5, to build up another big lead, 1-19 to 1-12, with matters now into stoppage time.
Sligo somehow survived the frantic conclusion and their manager, Tony McEntee, was delighted, although they’ll have to beat Antrim at Corrigan Park on Sunday next.
“I think this win was coming and it was a really steady performance for 65 or 70 minutes. There was a lot of really positive play.”
