Tipp hand Cork first defeat of the Ben O’Connor era
Munster U20HC: Tipperary 3-20 Cork 0-18
Report by Eoghan Cormican for the Irish Examiner newspaper
A Senan Butler Tipp hat-trick. A first defeat of the Ben O’Connor era. A first hammering of the Ben O’Connor era. Direct Munster final passage has passed Cork by.
Tipperary maintaining their unbeaten start to the Munster U20 round-robin and Cork failing to maintain theirs carries implications. Brendan Cummins’ side have put themselves in pole position to progress straight to the provincial decider.
Even if the Premier were to lose their Round 5 outing to Clare next week, likely creating a three-way tie on six points, their current score difference of +27 will be hard surpassed.
In his 10th championship outing as Cork U20 manager, this was a first defeat for manager Ben O’Connor. It was more than a defeat. This hammering, and it decimating Cork’s score difference from +16 back to +5, has taken the champions out of the equation for a straight run through to the final. It could end up leaving them third, meaning a semi-final assignment on the road rather than at SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh.
Tipp, in front by 2-10 to 0-7 turning around, wasted no time in pushing the gap into double-digit territory. Oisín O’Donoghue, 12 seconds upon the restart, kept the sliotar rolling. A foul on Senan Butler was subsequently fired over by Darragh McCarthy.
Diarmuid Healy, William Buckley, and Jack Leahy fired over four-in-a-row in response. Cork, though, craved green flags. Barry Walsh had their outstanding chance. ‘Keeper Eoin Horgan was equal to the drive.
On 40 minutes, it was curtains for Cork. Paddy McCormack slipped Conor Martin inside. His shot was repelled by Paudie O’Sullivan. Senan Butler flashed in to flash home the rebound. Goal Tipp, hat-trick Butler. 3-12 to 0-11.
The final quarter stunk of inevitability. Cathal English’s point on 48 minutes completed the scoring of Tipp’s front eight.
For the third game in succession, Cork were cumbersome with their start. But unlike the previous two outings, the damage had not been rectified and reversed by the break. The opposition had not been overtaken. On this occasion, the opposition were nine clear at the break.
Cork were off the pace at the back and off target further forward. Tipperary’s opening goal on 17 minutes exemplified the former.
A Darragh McCarthy point attempt came back down off the post. Cork centre-back Óran O’Regan was far too casual in retrieving possession. Butler nipped in for the pickpocket. Goal Tipp.
The visiting response, in fairness, spoke to a side undaunted by the 1-9 to 0-5 deficit facing them. William Buckley was fouled for a Jack Leahy converted free. Half-back James Dwyer got forward for his second of the evening. The gap back to five. Five minutes to the break.
Cork had ample opportunity between here and the short whistle to eat further into Tipperary’s advantage. Instead, they doubled their wide count from four to eight. Leahy was twice wide from the placed-ball. The same player, along with Tadhg O’Connell, was also off target from play.
These misses bit hard in first half stoppages. Darragh McCarthy played through Butler and he rifled in his second major of the half.
McCarthy didn’t score from play in the opening half. He didn’t need to. His influence, the same as it had been for Nenagh CBS during their historic Harty campaign earlier in the year, was all over Tipp’s forward play.
He had, as mentioned, a hand in both goals, even if the first was accidental. He converted three frees, assisted for Sam O’Farrell’s white flag, and dragged Cork full-back Kevin Lyons far from his usual fortress.
In hurtling 0-8 to 0-4 ahead by the 14th minute, Tipp had forceful contributions from Paddy McCormack, including a sideline, Conor Martin, and the aforementioned pair of McCarthy and O’Farrell.
Their defence, meanwhile, clamped down on Healy and Leahy, if not Buckley. They clamped down on Cork’s winning run. Can Cork recover from this punishing setback?
