Paul Kelly gets first win in charge as Tipperary defeat Limerick in McGrath Cup
Tipperary 1-11 Limerick 0-10
Report by Michael Dundon for the Irish Examiner newspaper
New Tipperary football manager Paul Kelly got the first win of his reign as his charges recorded a four point victory over Limerick in their McGrath Cup tie at Templetuohy on Sunday.
It is a result that was of no consequence to either side following defeats for both by Kerry in the opening round and the Wicklow man did not read too much into the success.
“It is only pre-season. I am happy with the win but it is how we perform that I am looking at,” he said.
“We have a young team. Defensively and athletically we improved on our last game. We are five or six weeks behind where I would like our preparations to be so it was nice to see the team driving on in the closing stages.”
In what was always a tightly contested affair, Tipperary moved 0-4 to 0-1 clear after 16 minutes, goalkeeper Evan Comerford pointing two frees before retiring injured. Limerick’s James Naughton hit three points from frees for the visitors to level by the 34th minute but on the stroke of half-time Stephen O Brien pointed a forty five to give Tipp a 0-5 to 0-4 advantage at the break.
The second half followed a similar pattern with Tipperary just keeping their noses in front. On the hour mark they led 0-8 to 0-7 and the crucial score came after 65 minutes when Luke Shanahan punished a handling error in the Limerick defence to score a Tipperary goal.
Tipperary finished the stronger and comfortably protected their four points advantage to the end.
With Tipp’s opening game in division four of the National Football League against Carlow two weeks away, the injury to goalkeeper Comerford is a concern for Kelly.
“We don’t really know at this stage how he is. We’ll know more in the coming days but I am hoping it is not too serious”, he added.
The manager confirmed that regulars Conor Sweeney, Mark Russell and Stephen Quirke, all of whom are nursing injuries, are in training and he expects they will see action during the league.
Tipp started six newcomers with four more coming off the bench. Jimmy Feehan was a towering figure at fullback with Steven O Brien, Sean O Connor, Kieran Costello, Luke Shanahan and Kyle Shelley also doing well.
Relegated to division three of the league last term, Limerick have work to do if they are to challenge for divisional honours. Sean O Dea, Iain Corbett, James Naughton and subs Daniel Daly and Diarmuid Kelly were their top performers.
